Stephen Hawking was a true hero to me. Wouldn't it be so poetic and awesome if research based off Dr. Hawking's autopsy lead to a cure to ALS? RIP Dr. Stephen Hawking, a bright star that guided many sailors on the sea of knowledge throughout a wonderfully accomplished career.
You are making the false assumption that ALS is one single illness and not motor neuron death that can be caused by different things such as over +35 different genetic mutations in the familial cases and different toxins and infections in the sporadic ones (90% are sporadic) - fungal infections, heavy metals and BMAA are risk factors. I would, however, like to know why he had such a long lasting plateau in his progression whereas most people just go downhill very rapidly.
Here here! He's become even more of an inspiration to me as I've acquired an as yet unidentified but progressive neuromuscular disorder, as well as blood disorder that may progress to Waldenstroms. I don't have Stephens intellect but am inspired to try and match his spirit.

actually, that change would make no real difference and the meaning and context of the title would be relatively the same; but still moot since the question wasn't actually answered. the only difference it would make is changing it to a question more about how he is still alive (considering his condition), which is countered by the content of the video, making it even more improper. in the way the title is, it could be perceived as how he has coped/embraced the condition, which the video actually addresses, though probably the same as most people. While I hate the title, your suggestion only makes it more disingenuous.
My father was one of the unlucky ones who died after 4 years with the disease. It was very hard to see him slowly deteriorate. Getting over the shock after he was gone was way worse. Stephen has always been a beacon of hope in my eyes, for he found a way to survive what many like my father couldn't. However, the questions still remains: how did he contract the disease? Every disease happens for a reason. My mother thinks my father got it while he was stationed in Vietnam during the war. I don't think this is true. From all my studies, one thing I'm almost certain of is where all suffering comes from. To find out why Stephen contracted one of the most deadly diseases known to man, we'd have to dig deep into his past and his mind. Sadly, we can't do the latter due to his unfortunate passing, but we can certainly dig deep into his past, especially his childhood.
Midnight Sonnet my mother is currently battling ALS. I know exactly what you mean... for me it’s not the fact she’s going to die that hurts the most. It’s the fact I have to watch it. She’s had it for little over a year now, but I’ve just noticed her knees starting to buckle under her own weight. The disease non contagious though. It’s either genetic or sporadic as far as they know. I have a theory that stress has something to do with it. My mother has a very stressful life and me being the child I am didn’t help, I was 13 when she was diagnosed almost 14 and now I’m 15 and I’m still as much as a pain as ever.
Midnight Sonnet, sorry to hear about your dad. But from your nearest experience of this illness- do you really believe that somebody can live so many years with ALS? Is it miracle for you or is it just a hoax?
I agree with your mother. I think maybe your father was exposed to some neurotoxin during the war. Veterans have an increased rate of ALS than the general population.
@@arleem8799 TH-cam didn't notify me of any replies but the last one, so I apologize for the extremely late response. Sweetie, I'm so sorry for what you're going through. ALS is a terrible disease. I completely agree with you about stress being a potential cause. It's been proven that stress causes inflammation, which in turn, causes disease. Please do not blame yourself for what happened. It's not your fault. When I was your age, I blamed myself for my dad and mom's "suffering", but it's simply not true. You're a kid. You're gonna be a handful. A person's suffering comes from their mind and their responses to outside stimuli, including trauma from their past. There's a high probability your mom has a lot of trauma she's holding onto from her childhood.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. As far as I know his response rate was 1 word per minute. Imagine your mind wanting to say a thousand words every moment but you struggle to even say one word. Such a difficult life but to live ,yet he never let his condition affect his love for physics. Rest in Peace.
He went into a concussion then a medical comma later he suffered from this but he had this inflicted upon by his accident were as others are born and are usually to die due to the short life span genes cannot produce more for the body at a young age or let's say a new born and all newborns that are born with a strong and normal health have genes capable of fighting off future past diseases you get the picture. Stephen however was a adult who had an accident at a healthy adult age but now his past dedicated survival efforts are now probably striving to let him live longer just like a backup generator it keeps it running but sooner or later it's light will not run nor will the engine. It may help some.
Born with the disease is not the same as living and accidentally getting the disease. Thermonuclear bio weapons like the DEW or WMD are capable enough to lash out waves of unseen gamma rays usually anyone that gets hit by it or walks through don't believe the movies heh a bunker won't save you as bunkers are not deep enough to stop the brutal force of uncontrollably released atoms if you walk through the area after a week passes or months pass or years pass congrats you have earned a death sentence that's not curable. Usually radiation from X rays like the doctor or dentist also causes cancer but that's if you receive a high hit from it or if you go multiple times cancer will spawn in your body easily, but X-rays are always made at low settings for all public uses so don't worry but back in the 80's people were screwed by the technology lack of knowledge and responsibility. A human body with a anti rad suit can walk through a radioactive area for 8 minutes in areas that are highly radioactive of course you only can take 2 minutes as the suit will start making you feel as if you're in a boiling area though you will exhale a lot of humidity making filtration tougher this is why 2 minutes is the max then you have to wait 10 minutes to level off the rads. Know that a person breeding with cancer is dooming the next generation with let's say a curse why cause the parent is doing this on purpose or doesn't know but let's say a newborn is grown now the parent is 35 and he got hit by rads when he was 32 ok so the child's life span is dropped excessively to a max life span of 12 or 8 it's sad to witness but know it is the parents fault for bringing in life of one that is not healthy or also is not healthy themselves. ALS does similar acts as Cancer. Just one is muscle and one is an age killer.
I am sure the wealth factor has helped extend his life. This is not to say that there aren't other factors like intellectual engagement. But, I doubt the average working Joe could have afforded the kinds of benefits that have helped him to stay active and engaged with the world.
well before he lost his voice, he could barely talk so that most people could hear or understand. because his muscles that were associated with his voice, was very weak. and i dont know if he has recorded his voice before he got als. but he could probably have been able to talk a bit after he got als.
There's a documentary video called "The Real Stephen Hawking" and in the middle of video there's a footage when he's talking. It's after he has ALS though, so his voice was so weak, but If you use headphone, you still could understand him :)
An amazing man, put on the earth to teach us to reach for the stars. Fly high Mr Hawking, you've earned the best view of the universe. The world will be a sadder place with you not in it. You'll be remembered always 💔😢
R.I.P. He was so cool because he challenged ideas and opened us to things that we wouldn't have known before. He's been an inspiration to so many because he never let his ALS stop him from doing things. He might have had some pretty out-there ideas, but he did it all in the name of science and furthering humanity. Truly, the best kind of person we all should be.
I've come to this video to find inspiration. I was just diagnosed with a degenerative spinal condition that has developed into a pretty significant stage. It's not life-threatening, but it will continue to deteriorate. I wanted to find out what Stephen Hawking felt about his own disability. To find inspiration, to not panic; but to bravely go on. Should anyone be here, looking for a video like this when they face a scary diagnosis.. your answer comes at 4:53. Thank you and bless you, Stephen. You have brought me some peace, and given me encouragement towards the future.
+Hoenhighn1 He wasn't transgender, though he did advocate for the right of transgender people to have gender reassignment surgery as they weren't mentally ill.:)
Because he was the master of time and space. Fixed time to make him go on decades. RIP Stephen, you've done enough, we will continue to move science forward
You say it as if that's a bad thing. Whats wrong with a different lable if you share the same beliefs? All you're doing is creating division amongst people who could otherwise share a civil discussion and agree on many things, all because they don't share your exact lable...
I think Hawking was unbeatable despite having ALS and a tracheotomy surgery that prevented him to use his voice. Thanks to Perfect Paul’s voice, knowledge of black holes, and the support of family and friends, Hawking managed to live a long and happy ended life. Rest In Peace Hawking.
This video covered ground I have thought about before. Hawking sat in front of huge crowds. If someone wanted to hurt him he couldn't defend himself. That makes him very brave. Another thing, Hawking wrote a lot and this makes him a leading spirit in terms of how he could inspire all the people who have muscle wasting diseases. The fact that he wrote a book is something that will be copied a lot. That makes him a brave inspirational bigger than life hero. The world's a better place because he lived. Thank you Stephen!
This was a great video, but HOW DID Stephen Hawking live so long with ALS? What's preventing the 10% who are diagnosed to live longer than 10 years? How was Hawking able to live a whopping 50 years.
Just have Chuck Norris punch Stephen hawking in the face. That should be enough to jumpstart the rest of his body. I mean, Hawkings mind is what you would get if you condensed chuck Norris into a human skull, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. wait...Hawkings brain...Chucks body..GET THOSE TWO MEN TO THAT ONE GUY WHO PLANS ON PERFORMING A HUMAN HEAD/BRAIN TRANSPLANT!!!
He made so much of his life despite his circumstances. A purpose driven life! A great Mind and face for ALS research. We need treatments for this horrific disease!!
That is really offensive to those that died earlier ... The real Stephen died ages ago and was replaced by a guy that was used as a puppet. Videos on here explain the Stephen Hawking hoax

Actually 6 words per minute
Im watching this at 2018 he passed away at march 14...hawking will be respected forever!
How Stephen Hawking Has Lived So Long With ALS
YOU DID NOT ANSWER :P
+ZimrDesigns how he has lived so long!
See the difference 😂😜
YES HE DID!!! he said THEY DONT KNOW WHY, that is an answer.
I'm curious of how the actual voice of Stephan hawking sound like, was there a recording saved?
well before he lost his voice, he could barely talk so that most people could hear or understand. because his muscles that were associated with his voice, was very weak. and i dont know if he has recorded his voice before he got als. but he could probably have been able to talk a bit after he got als.
+CanadaDig Proof? Or just you talking from your ass?
+GamingKyuubi ignore him. He's the type of person that doesn't believe we landed on the moon
Like Siri but more of a robot
R.I.P Stephen Hawking, a great scientist, and man, he will be missed.
Science and Professor Stephen Hawking are fucking amazing. :)
Nah what are you some kind of sheep. It's all about the word of God
Irony....
+Justice Blunt It's about connecting science with the word of God.
+nostalgic 80's guy nah man I was just kittin yah. Don't go gettin mad at me meow ;)
Calling me that word just makes you look like a silly child. Don't name call, that's what kids do, adults don't.
I’m still in shock that Stephen Hawking died. For some reason me and all of my friends thought her would just live forever.
*Rip My Dude*
R.i.p. to the legend himself Stephen hawking he’s just a living example of anything is possible
Einstein died at 73 and was vegetarian, walking on his both feet, eating ice cream .
he was a transgender too
+ahmed essa where the hell did you see that
+Hoenhighn1 He wasn't transgender, though he did advocate for the right of transgender people to have gender reassignment surgery as they weren't mentally ill.:)
Hoenhighn1 it's a joke chill
Rip thank you Stephen Hawking, you really changed everything for the better
*May he Rest In Piece. Stephen Hawking (8th January, 1942-14th March, 2018).* R.I.P :(
I just watched this today and found out he just died wtf.
idiot
the day I watch this video he was alive but then hours later found out he died ya, dumb idiot.
Rip my idol for space research. You will never be forgotten my the human race.
Rest in peace, "where is life, there is hope."
He had a heart of gold that's why he lived so long ❤😢 RIP
Lulu Charlene only if it was that simple
R.I.P, he died today.
inkyyyy no
That was posted the day he died
Rest in peace Stephen, i learned alot from him
Has anyone realised that Stephen hawking died on pi day?
Loki Lord and Einstein's birthday
OMG please don't bring Lacy Green here on DNews.. F**k.
ikr, I wanna kidnap her and scoop her eyes out while she's still alive.
Fuck laci green >:O shes hot but her views make me hate her
Laci Green is attractive but she says things that make me feel uncomfortable and dont fit with my childish fantasies about women- so I hate her!
Whereas when I think of laci green, I get extremely deviant.
I need some alone time now.
She talks about sex on her channel but is probably a virgin..
Because he was the master of time and space. Fixed time to make him go on decades. RIP Stephen, you've done enough, we will continue to move science forward
DNews was better
Nice political Compass i got a score near you
stupid liberal
Cool! hes still a liberal, you strike me as a liberal aswell
You say it as if that's a bad thing. Whats wrong with a different lable if you share the same beliefs? All you're doing is creating division amongst people who could otherwise share a civil discussion and agree on many things, all because they don't share your exact lable...
triggered
the title is messing me up.
I think Hawking was unbeatable despite having ALS and a tracheotomy surgery that prevented him to use his voice.
Thanks to Perfect Paul’s voice, knowledge of black holes, and the support of family and friends, Hawking managed to live a long and happy ended life. Rest In Peace Hawking.
rip stephen hawking. you will be greatly missed.
*Rest in peace to the late great Stephen Hawking. Your achievements will continue to inspire mankind forever.*
Rest In Peace Stephen, you were a gift to this world.
Well... that was it for him sadly... Rip Mr. Hawking.... By the way he died on Einsteins bithday...
And he was born on the anniversary of Galileo's death
Thanks for those two facts. Very interesting.
hes gonna be in our children's history books :D
Probably not but in science book yes
I dunno, I think he will. He's theorized so many things with his name.
MINDYWAAAA He just died March 13th
This video covered ground I have thought about before. Hawking sat in front of huge crowds. If someone wanted to hurt him he couldn't defend himself. That makes him very brave.
Another thing, Hawking wrote a lot and this makes him a leading spirit in terms of how he could inspire all the people who have muscle wasting diseases. The fact that he wrote a book is something that will be copied a lot. That makes him a brave inspirational bigger than life hero. The world's a better place because he lived. Thank you Stephen!
RIP Stephen Hawking.
March 14th with all respect
I watched his video yesterday and coincidentally he died ;( You are always our science hero, rest in peace Stephen Hawking...
RIP Steven Hawking
This was a great video, but HOW DID Stephen Hawking live so long with ALS? What's preventing the 10% who are diagnosed to live longer than 10 years? How was Hawking able to live a whopping 50 years.
think he was diagnosed at age 21
RIP. Your contributions will live on forever sir.
5:22 LMAO ITS THE FEMINIST CHICK!
yea fuck her and her inconsistent arguments
what did i miss, what did she say?
+DeadPool You sound so smart.
Kain Humphries She believes there are more than two genders. No.
Not the feminists, it's the lady that says "3 genders, 4 genders, even 5!" and she's not lying...
That receding hairline tho
you just killed him with that roast, you bad bad man
Tae T why why would you kill him like that
Saruulbuyan Munkhtur he was talking bout Trace
Tell that to LeBron
Tae T YOU KILLED HIM!
Anyone else realize that this was uploaded a year ago but the title uses the word lived as in past tense
Just have Chuck Norris punch Stephen hawking in the face. That should be enough to jumpstart the rest of his body. I mean, Hawkings mind is what you would get if you condensed chuck Norris into a human skull, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
wait...Hawkings brain...Chucks body..GET THOSE TWO MEN TO THAT ONE GUY WHO PLANS ON PERFORMING A HUMAN HEAD/BRAIN TRANSPLANT!!!
milkbox
I really laughed at this!
Fuckin normies
PixelStudios ikr... laughing at chuck norris jokes
I didn't know I needed this until I saw it.
RIP
Coz he was very focused and hard worker, who never gave a single excuse...
And always given reason to live, and not excuse to die
Respected the video...then I saw Laci green
you're an idiot.
How so? I too was fairly displeased when she appeared on the screen
Lmao!😅
Because he is a baller
OG baller
baaaawwwler
Because he's an alien. (conspiracy time)
He made so much of his life despite his circumstances. A purpose driven life! A great Mind and face for ALS research. We need treatments for this horrific disease!!
Cant beleieved he's passed so sad and upset😭😵 :(
Video title: "how hawking has lived so long with ALS" 4:45 : "no one knows how Stephen Hawking has lived so long with ALS"
It's bullshit that's why
I cried when they said he died on the news today. Another idol leaves earth
Why has he lived for so long? Because he's rich and famous, so he's able to get the best treatments.
"Rich"
The UK has universal health care. He doesn't NEED money.
Just no
+Susan Stanko
Canada says hi
Dr.Philry Hi
Spoiler alert! You never find out why Stephen Hawking has lived so long.
At all.
History only remembers 1 in 1000 of us but his sacrifice and struggles which he overcame. Stephen my hero history picked you.
The title sounds like Dnews just wants him to die already.
He lived so long because God let him live.
Yes. I know he was an atheist, but God is not prejudice when it comes to humans.
Cooper Confidential God sure didn't help when that 3 year old got buried alive.
If god is real
That is really offensive to those that died earlier ... The real Stephen died ages ago and was replaced by a guy that was used as a puppet. Videos on here explain the Stephen Hawking hoax
...
And atheist surmise it as suffering...
This came out over a year ago and suddenly it's in my recommended 3 days after... well you know.
