Aegis did not wake Chell up as a failsafe actually, it was programmed to wake up whoever was first on the subject list, and Doug Rattmann was the one to assign Chell as the first subject of the list.

The events of Half-Life are long gone when this game and Portal 2 takes place. You have to remember that during Portal 1 the Combine ruled the Earth and at that time Gordon Freeman was also fighting them. Portal 2 starts hundreds of thousands of years into the future according to the announcer in the start that you have been asleep for 9999999. So during Portal Stories: Mel and Portal 2 the Combine have already been beaten for a very long time. This makes even more sense if you read the story of Episode Three.

actually, I find it kind of sweet that at first mel wasn't strong enough to open the door hatch, but finally, at the end, she managed to finally get out and open the hatch. It's subtle easter eggs like this that make a story satisfying. Mel's character arc was truly complete.

A small theory: the ending of the game does not imply apocalypse happened. What I think it could be is that the Apeture Science facility was completely abandoned after the GLADoS incident, and so Combine wasn't aware of it, so it was left completely abandoned. What I think this and Portal 1 was trying to imply was that GLADoS is aware of the Combine and so tries not to bring their attention by keeping all the test subjects who survived.

the game is in MICHIGAN. michigan might have changed from a city to a potential country city, and the people from michigan moved in another place. Yes, global warming is taking over, but scientists are fixing and thinking- what can they change to items so they'll not pollute. People are starting to recycle, reuse and others, so they'll not do harm to Earth. But maybe you're right, maybe in a millenia or so, Michigan might look like this.

When i played this game for myself i cried at the end, i do with any portal game really because i have to say goodbye to the people i have been helping and them helping me and seeing them for the last time before i can never see them again (yes i know i can just start a new file but whats the point in that?) it just makes me emotional.

Seeing how this game lines up 50-100 years after the 7 hour war, I would have loved to seen some combine buildings or and APC, just something that points at HL2 in someway. Still, this game blows me away, Mel is cannon for me.

Since half life and portal are same universe, in ending when world is showed I was disappointed I didn't find anything related to combine or xen. Because Mel probably woke up during or right after the end of 7 hour war, anyway, close to it.
Whether it's 50 or 50000 years between Portal 1 and 2 doesn't matter that much, but I lean towards 70 years gap looking at how overgrown are parts of facility closer to surface. What important is that it takes place *long* after events of HL2, and Earth would be devoid of most, if not all, humans on the surface. This ending fits really well with main entrance to the facility. Derelict buildings in the background and overgrown forests where you would put a park. Ending of base Portal 2 feels like some side exit far away from main one. I remember intro video about hard light bridges showed that light would be harvested on standard wheat field with small shed in the middle. It could be maintained by some robots or whatever, so unlike some I believe that Both Mel and Chell got out.

Chell wakes up 50,000 years after she was put in the relaxation vault. The Combine invasion occurred during portal 1, so theoretically the human race outside of those in Aperture could be extinct. Huh
No, According to Half-Life Episode Three by Marc Laidlaw the Combine was beaten by Gordon when he sends in the Borealis into their homeworld and blows it up and also sacrifising himself. Portal 2 takes place long after this and Earth and Humanity will have recovered. It might just have been that Aperture Science have been forgotten by everyone and therefor no one have bothered to go and look for the facility after the events of Episode Three.
Even if it was: Mel escapes after PS:Mel and the Portal 2 events happen without major time jumps. So Chell exits the facility only shortly after Mel does (about a week, I guess.) So basically Mel could be walking around the city when the facility explodes and is sucked onto the moon. So it's likely the two have met.

It’s also been stated the machine **COULD** be broken, think of it the machine has been running for awhile it may be glitched out it could be trying to say 99 years or 9 years or something along those lines and it just glitched out or it could just be completely broken and is just spewing random numbers.

Since half life and portal are same universe, in ending when world is showed I was disappointed I didn't find anything related to combine or xen. Because Mel probably woke up during or right after the end of 7 hour war, anyway, close to it.

Whether it's 50 or 50000 years between Portal 1 and 2 doesn't matter that much, but I lean towards 70 years gap looking at how overgrown are parts of facility closer to surface.
What important is that it takes place *long* after events of HL2, and Earth would be devoid of most, if not all, humans on the surface.
This ending fits really well with main entrance to the facility. Derelict buildings in the background and overgrown forests where you would put a park.
Ending of base Portal 2 feels like some side exit far away from main one. I remember intro video about hard light bridges showed that light would be harvested on standard wheat field with small shed in the middle. It could be maintained by some robots or whatever, so unlike some I believe that Both Mel and Chell got out.

No it takes place right before Portal 2. So that’s about 60050 years after 1952

Chell wakes up 50,000 years after she was put in the relaxation vault. The Combine invasion occurred during portal 1, so theoretically the human race outside of those in Aperture could be extinct. Huh
No, According to Half-Life Episode Three by Marc Laidlaw the Combine was beaten by Gordon when he sends in the Borealis into their homeworld and blows it up and also sacrifising himself. Portal 2 takes place long after this and Earth and Humanity will have recovered. It might just have been that Aperture Science have been forgotten by everyone and therefor no one have bothered to go and look for the facility after the events of Episode Three.
Even if it was: Mel escapes after PS:Mel and the Portal 2 events happen without major time jumps. So Chell exits the facility only shortly after Mel does (about a week, I guess.) So basically Mel could be walking around the city when the facility explodes and is sucked onto the moon. So it's likely the two have met.
@@Antifuse i think they didnt met becouse they got free from different places. Aperture science is VERY huge and Mel went out from a different emergency elevator meanwhile chell got free from mainchamber where Glados lives(?)
It’s also been stated the machine **COULD** be broken, think of it the machine has been running for awhile it may be glitched out it could be trying to say 99 years or 9 years or something along those lines and it just glitched out or it could just be completely broken and is just spewing random numbers.
And Mel woke Chell up... by shutting down the Aperture Employee Guardian and Intrusion System.
