There is an additional symptom of the coronavirus-the loss of smell. Why could this be happening?

    0:24 Newly discovered coronavirus symptoms
0:49 The enzyme involved in taste and smell
1:09 Zinc and the loss of the sense of smell and taste
    1:40 What causes anosmia?
    4:33 Zinc is incredibly important
Today we're going to talk about why the coronavirus causes the loss of smell.
    Some coronavirus symptoms:
    • Fever
    • Tired
    • Cough (dry)
    • Shortness of breath
    • Sore throat
Recently it has been found that there can be an additional symptom, and it's the loss of smell. The medical name for a loss of smell is "anosmia." You can also have a loss of taste.
What might cause this to happen?
There is a certain enzyme that's involved in your perception of smell and taste. It's called carbonic anhydrase 6. This essential enzyme for the sense of taste and smell is zinc-dependent. Big symptoms of a zinc deficiency are actually a loss of the sense of smell and a loss of the sense of taste.
I think the reason for the symptom of a loss of smell could be a zinc deficiency. When you go through an infection, especially in your lungs, you use up a lot of zinc. Zinc is not stored that well in the body. So, unless your constantly consuming zinc, chances are you're going to be zinc deficiency. On top of that, with an infection, you could be even more zinc deficient.
Potential anosmia causes that could be connected to zinc:
    • Upper respiratory infection
    • Nasal polyp
    • Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
    • Hypothyroid
    • Antibiotics
    • Diabetes
    • Cushing's syndrome
    • Cadmium poisoning
    • Zinc deficiency
    • Kallmann syndrome
    • Primary ciliary dyskinesia
A loss of smell could potentially be because of a zinc deficiency. Taking zinc might not only help improve the sense of smell, but it also might help increase the strength of the immune system. Overall, zinc is a vitally important mineral.

I was not able to smell or taste anything for 2 weeks after I was tested positive for covid. During those two weeks, I did steaming daily and also took Vitamin C and Zinc tablets which were really effective. During the third week, I was able to smell strong smelling substances like deo, nail polish, camphor, etc and I got my smell and taste back gradually. It's been a month now and both my senses have been restored back to normal. I can smell and taste 100% now 😊 . Wishing everybody a speedy recovery 😁

I lost 100% of taste & smell in late 2019, and... pretty much lost my 'life' (and friends/@$$ociates) shortly afterward, so... yeah.
Now, i just 'exist'. Yuck. 😕
EDIT: I neglected to note that I DID recover around 80-90% of taste & smell after about 3-4 months (I took many actions, none of which I'm certain helped or not), but... it all doesn't really matter--my health/endurance will never be the same. Hard to explain.
Also, to be *crystal* clear: this was PRIOR to COVID-19 being officially announced, prior to testing, and (obviously) prior to any c19 vaccines. No one believed that I was extremely sick, not even my (now ex) gf. Everyone just thought I was pathetic, lying, weak, whining, etc., lol 😂🤣😂 f×¢k1π€ unscientific a®$3h01e$.
I knew it was going to be a global issue as early as January/February. 😓 Everyone ghosted me in early 2020, because I was 'fake news', lololol
Guess how many apologies were given? Big hint: as many election votes which were fraudulent. 😎

Doc said it's one of the only nerve endings that can be killed off and regrow. Smelling a flower again first time was such a beautiful experience. Everything is different, can barely smell a fart and yet can detect tiny amounts of various chemicals and distinguish them while others have no idea. Glad flowers smell the same though. I am also a healthcare worker, on PUI since had some mild symptoms after taking care of some + ve patients. They lost my swab, just went again to be reswabbed. No more symptoms. I started taking zinc when I started following dr. Berg year ago. I have learned soo much from him that my overall health is soo much better and I always try to buy his products just because I want to pay back something in regard to what he does for us. I know its nothing as compare to what he did to me and my family. I' m always blessed and grateful to have him and Jesus in my life. Thank you dr. Berg.

Oh my god!! Thank you. I noticed that I’ve also had bad breakouts of acne which I know is related to a zinc deficiency. I’ve been taking zinc with an added b complex and after 3 days I was able to smell my perfume again. This really does work. Went from 10% of my sense of smell to about 25%. Will continue to take zinc daily.

October 2018 I had a very horrendous sinusitis episode (I guess) with fever, chills, sore throat, shortness of breath and severe neck pain ( I also have degenerative disc disease in my neck and back which flared up like a mofo during this). Went to an Urgent care facility, they swabbed me for flu and strep, which were negative. Prescribed antibiotic, took it all, recovered as expected with one alarming feature..I couldn't smell. Anything. At all. Went to an ENT, had a scope done and a ct scan, all looked fine. I was told it may take a while to get my sense of smell back. The past year and a half without smell has been very hard, depressing. And dangerous. I cant smell food burning so I have to be really focused when cooking. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to smell a fire. Or a gas leak in the house. I have monitors now though. I have taken zinc supplements for 6 months now and I think a small percentage is returning. I can smell sweet scents, like the vanilla scented trash bags, but all sweet things smell the same, like the scented trash bags 😕. I cant smell bitter, or sulphur (one caveat, cant smell the dog farts! Lol ), or sour, so I cant smell if a food has gone off. And the way its affected my taste is really depressing! Sweets, believe it or not, gag me. I enjoy tart, salty, savory stuff but even with those there isnt any nuance of flavor, its one dimensional. There are so many smells I miss...the smell of rain, fresh air coming through the window, pine trees, fall leaves, favorite perfume, my husbands warm skin as he hugs me, coffee brewing. Well, I'm near crying now so I'll shut up. Good luck all.

I got COVID the first time the last weekend in Jan. 2020 but my smell was heightened at the onset, which made me nauseous and didn't help the vomiting. I can't remember if I lost my sense of taste or smell after that...BUT the second time I got COVID second week of Jan. 2022 I lost my sense of taste and smell on day 6 or 7 and it freaked me out so bad because I could breathe through my nose the entire time I was sick. I felt panicked...it was so awful. Fortunately within 3 more days it started to return...still dealing with a little fatigue and cough a month later. 😣
Natural immunity worked for almost 2 years. Interestingly enough I had an upper respiratory issue and stomach bug in 2018 and 2019 before COVID 2020. In the last 5 years, 2021 has been the only year I didn't get sick. Six times with the same two illnesses in five years. More times sick in last 5 years than in the 52 years before. 🤔 Is it age or something else?

Most smells are distorted like for instance coffee grounds in which I use to love. My taste isn't so bad though but still not like before the covid got me.

I wish I had seen this months ago. I had Covid in August 2021 and lost some of my sense of taste and smell. Then a few months ago certain things started tasting weird, sort of smoky but not in a pleasant way. Peanutbutter doesn't smell right or taste right, lots of things like bacon and fried eggs just make me want to gag now. I had put the zinc away thinking I didn't need it any more. I'm going to start taking it again tonight. Thanks for the information!

Just sharing my experience for people who haven’t had COVID yet. Husband and I both got the Delta Covid a few weeks ago. We are 40-50 yrs old. Managed it at home, it was like a really bad flu. We did lose taste and smell for about 5 days. But it slowly returned. We were taking vit C and zinc.
It’s just part of the symptoms. If you have it now try not to freak out too bad. It does come back little by little. Overall, I was sick about 10 days.

Thank you for this video Dr Berg!!! I suspect I’ve already had this virus, I had very few symptoms (body aches and chills, fatigue and my temperature would go up very little here and there but not a full blown fever). After about a week I recovered but noticed my sense of smell and taste were altered. I’m 2 weeks after recovery and those senses are still affected and I was wondering why. This video just clarified it for me, although I haven’t had an official diagnosis. If I might share with others what I started doing the moment the first case was confirmed in the US: taking mega dosis of vitamins C and D, up to 40,000 IU of vitamin D and 6,000 mg of vitamin C daily. Perhaps this helped me a great deal to not get the upper respiratory symptoms. Now I’m not trying to give medical advise or prescribe anything here, just sharing my experience. Stay safe everyone.
