Only an 8 row head on a Class 9 combine with a 543 HP turbo diesel...gotta drive fast just to keep the separator full to get the maximum efficiency out of the machine.
I would think so because you lose efficiency constantly turning around at the headlands. With a 400 bushel grain tank, I would think an 8 row head would really make opening fields a lot easier though.
We have been doing that with a 1480 Red combine 40 years ago in 190 BU corn. Nice for JD to finally catch up. And the snapping rolls chopped the stalks up while we combined.
Small head on a class 9 with all that power, that would be the only way they could move at that speed, the BIG question is would it be better to run slower with a 12 row head, as with 2 passes you would be doing what it takes them to do 3. At that speed I should think it was all the grain carts could do to keep up with them. Had to be filmed from the air otherwise if you blinked you would miss one going past. - Is this the beginning of a new generation of "high speed" farming, - great video as always.
Thank you.. I was actually brought out to the field with a salesman from John Deere. From what I heard he will be upgrading to a larger head for next season.
@@AerialAg Interesting. Are JD developing a bigger head so that you can run at that speed then.? Or is it just a case of he is upgrading to the 'standard' 12 row head. If they can get a 12 row head on a combine to run at that speed (cleanly) he will need to 'upgrade' his grain carts as well, - it was all they could do was to keep up with 'production' their.
Christopher Lovelock throughput (bushels/hour) of the machine won’t change if the head changes. That’s assuming he was running the machine near full capacity in the video. Going to a larger head would allow them to run slower ground speed while keeping the machine full.
@@Ellison89Brett Yes I quite agree, - (that's just maths). - What I'm curious about Is what speed they hope to run at with the bigger heads, - if they are hoping to maintain that speed (or very near it) I would think that is going to be a sight to see.!!
I figured the same thing, but I was shocked to see how little corn was on the ground.. I looked pretty good too but saw hardly any..Figured maybe since the corn was so dry it shelled better? But I don't know much about corn so that was just a guess.
I loved this video with the filter on your camera. Was it a red or brown filter? It seems the microphone on your drone was not functioning so you dubbed in the sugar cane harvesters sound track. Is that what happened?
There is no microphone on the drone. The sound is from this combine I took with my camcorder. I do use a lens filter on the drone to reduce washout from the sunlight, but there's no color to it. I touched up the color a little bit with my editing app, but just barely. This is pretty much how it looked.
Thank you ! To be honest I'm not exactly sure. I met a salesman with John Deere in Marksville and then followed him on about a 20 minute drive. Just looked up his farm info, it says Vick.
Wow awesome video Buddy! Wow that S790 is making great time! Up here in 🇨🇦 the corn very rarely drys down like that. Did the farmer desicate the corn field? You know what moisture the corn was? You know me lots of questions! 😂 Thanks for sharing the video!! 👍👍
Yes and what amazed me the most was that there was no corn on the ground! I was shocked! I don't have many details as these guys never stopped at all so I didn't get to talk to them.
Aerial Ag OK so they just kept on moving and moving they did! That’s impressive with no corn on the ground! Combine set right and great combine to begin with! Thanks again!
We don’t desiccate corn in the south. Plenty of heat and sunshine to dry down on its own. Corn rarely gets dried with propane / natural gas down here either. Only time it gets run through a drier is if the operation has a bunch of corn acres and wants to get started early. Some cotton farmers will start harvesting high moisture con and run it through a drier in order to have time to defoliate their cotton on time / start picking cotton
If you get the right conditions and you can pull off the cob only, and 17% moisture, it is a lot more fun. Judging by the white dust...its been yoo dry for too long.
Sprung for the big combine, maybe should have sprung for the bigger header too, lol. You could really see some weed/volunteer growth between the rows in that one overhead scene.
They would be harvesting over 15 acres per hour. This corn looks pretty good for that area. If it's making 170 x 15 acres they could be filling 3 trucks per hour. Very dry corn that's standing perfectly allows them to drive that fast. We can only travel half that speed in 200 bu 22% corn.
@@lfeco They were moving pretty good and most surprising to me no corn on the ground.. I'm not too familiar with corn as I live in sugar cane country.. but I thought for sure they'd be some loss moving at that speed.. I was wrong
@@AerialAg The important thing with combines is keeping them at a good load not the speed. You experience more grain loss coming from under loaded machines (not having enough grain move through them) or improper settings. The only real loss from speed would be from the head, from ears bouncing out and kernels breaking off the ear.
I would like to say that from what I understand having a head run at that speed isn't good on it. Thats why most people run at least a 12 row with a combine that big.
Havent seen wide row corn since the early 70's. Guess they cant find a 36" 16 row head.... (48' corn head LOL...) Cool video hauling balls but that 790 is more impressive @ 3-4 mph in 250 bu corn 16 rows at a time.

It's not that quick for a 8 row head. However, it's a nice machine. Most folks up north run 12 or 16 row headers. They're the folks producing most of the video. Just doesn't seem efficient.
Well I really have no idea about corn. I live in the middle of sugar cane country. I drove three hours north to film this. I just love agricultural equipment and seeing it operate. I like to see different crops when I have the chance.. hope you at least enjoyed the video, thanks .
I have seen combines achieve faster ground speed wit a smaller head than a 12 row corn 🌽head 8 row on a S790 running 7mph wit wit no grain loss out the rear chaffer of the combine
I guarantee you running 7mph there’s corn coming out the back. I like to see that field in 3 weeks after he disked it and it got about a inch or two of rain, it would look like he planted corn as a cover crop.
Aerial Ag go back in about 3-4 weeks after it’s disked and rained and take a picture. You’ll be surprised. I have Case 9250’s combines and I’ve had Deere S690 and you can look real good but those kernels hide until it rains and JD is the worst of all combines for grain loss and I’ve flip flopped back and forth between Deere and Case since I was 15 Yrs old and that’s been 46 Yrs
Kentucky farmer 21 a friend of mine has one and I ran it about a hour last fall shelling corn at 225 bu to the acre at 19% moisture with a 12 row 30 inch head 3.5 mph was it, anymore speed at it covered the ground coming out the back and the sample was not clean. My JD 9870 is going across my fields for the last time this year.
7mph with an 8 row head is 3.5 mph with a 16 row head. Problem with going fast harvesting is if there is something in the field and you can't stop in time. Next thing you know you got a bent point..... or worse
our big class 9 S790'S will run 7 mph wit smaller corn 🌽 head such as a 6 row or 8 row head and as long as u got the threashing and separating speed and capacity u can move some corn 🌽 out of the feild um speaking on this cause um combine operator for 28 years I worked on the farm back home in North East Louisiana for 31 years as a heavy equipment farmhand operator running combines and tractors left the farm went to work for john deere for 18 years now as a equipment setup technician setting up large AG and lawn and garden equipment
Great photography, seems like he is going very fast. Great machine. 👍👍
No matter is 8 row head or 12 row head that's some working machine. 💪
This is a Master piece of precision
Doing a nice job. Back in the early 80’s I was shelling corn at 7 mph with a N5 Gleaner with a 6-30 corn head
gleanors are tough. nothin you didn't need.
Finally a video that's just harvest and not someone yapping during the video
Now thats a operator!!!
Bonito video🇪🇸👏👏👏👏👏

Thats the only way u can keep the separator system loaded to capacity wit that small head its a lil different wit a 12 row or 16 row corn 🌽 head
Wtf? 😮 Crazy speed!
Very beautiful task.
Beautiful operation. How much is farm ground down there
How Fast is The 9870sts Running
Looks like 36” or 38” rows which makes sense in cotton country. Noticed the flood irrigation, too.
Beautiful Farm !!!!!!

Wouldn't 12 row head at 5mph be more effcieint?
Possibly, I just shoot video lol
I would think so because you lose efficiency constantly turning around at the headlands. With a 400 bushel grain tank, I would think an 8 row head would really make opening fields a lot easier though.
@Mike Underwood A 12 Row head would be too Cumbersome
He is Ripping thru that Corn 🌽 , I realize it’s only a 8-Row header ... but still impressive

8 rows of dry corn.. ,7 mph..with the biggest machine they make?..hmmmm

Greg baker Is that an invitation? Lol ...
why not run a 16 row on one combine? i got to combine corn that dry once in my life and it was fun!
Maybe YOU should buy the corn head for them...
serious question. from a management point of view 1 less machine to maintain and one more person to haul corn away from the combine.
Maybe use six row heads and drive 10mph! 😏
