I'd like to hear how he got to sola scriptura being that Jesus left a church not a bible. He seems reasonable and said he read early church fathers so I'm curious how he got to the point where he affirmed sola scriptura.

I watched your discussion on Reason &Theology immediately before watching this. It was a good, respectful discussion. All three of you have a great treasure of Bible verses at the top of your heads to call upon. Protestants tend to use their knowledge of scripture to go into attack mode, even when talking to one another, and when one point of attack fails, they take another tangent. I'm a former Protestant and to be honest, I don't miss the arguments, the desire to dominate others with scriptural arguments. Catholicism is so much less stressful. To know that it is possible to simply believe, without always having to justify your beliefs to others. To be able to read the Bible as stories of people you want to know about instead of as an armory where you're searching for weapons to use against your foes.Anyway, it was an interesting discussion that never turned ugly, and I appeciated that.

      Exactly.
The Bible is the story of God’s love. And to be spread in the form of love.
Not to be used as some weapon to be used as fights or to condemn people of their sins.
This is why the Catholic Church has an authority. People coming up with their own interpretations just leads to a mess. And Protestantism that has caused a mess.

Hey! Just curious about 1 Corinthians chapter 9 you mentioned. I'm trying to find the connection you made to Paul saying he could fall away and be disqualified. The chapter just seems to be about Paul saying Christian ministry leaders should be financially taken care of. Thanks in advance!

Hi , i didn't have the chance to see the video fully, however i would like clarify we protestants belive that faith produces fruts/actions.
When Martin Luther said "only faith" he wasn't saying against external faith but he was challenging the idea of indulgences, penitences-penance and liturgy from that time.
We have the same God; Catholics, Protestants, Ortodox have the same base. Paul said in his letters we need to love each other instead of fighting for denominations, so our unity is important. ❤
John 13:35 says when we love truly each other as faith family, the world see God in us. 🙏🏼
Every church denomination has something to change, we are being transformed daily (2 Corinthians 3:18)_glory by glory. 🙏🏼

19:16 I am confused by the externally and internally distinction. I think we need both. Wouldn't having something merely externally be equivalent to being in mortal sin? If you have something internally then you would have it externally but you could have something externally without it being internal. I think this would get into the nature of the church and proper ecclesiology, catholic anthropology, and the grace/nature distinction.

@12:51 I remember this in the debate as well and how he stated it was talking about false teachers. The text also talks about those who have gone astray in 2 Peter 2:15. It seems that one can be a false teacher from the beginning and also one can become a false teacher.
I would want to know what is meant be false teachers. Would it refer to those who just teach false doctrine or those who have no right to teach to begin with because they are not of the Apostolic office (and their successors)? Are they teaching heresy and in addition usurping the office of bishop?

It's literally the sinners of sloth. It's 2023. People could easily Google what they disagree with with the Catholic Church and find the biblical or traditional basis for the belief yet they choose not to and remain ignorant.

Just to reiterate, by faith alone isn't impossible, but baptism is the ordinary means of initial justification, and it is made pretty obvious in scripture! ✌️

In Matthew 16:18 it says, “You are Peter; and on this rock my congregation will build.” From this the Catholic Church derives the office of the Pope and also the thesis that Jesus wanted to build the church on Peter. Verse 19 says, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in the heavens,” etc. How should we understand this verse? Bible passage(s): Matthew 16:18,19 Peter is “Petros” in Greek, while rock is “Petra”. Petros means: a stone, a piece of a rock. Petra is the rock itself. So this passage does not give the slightest basis for the teaching that the church was built on Peter and that Peter is the head of the church. What verse 19 says has nothing to do with the church, but with the kingdom of heaven. You don't build with keys, you unlock things with them. The verse means that Peter could open the kingdom of heaven and admit people, as we see in Acts chapters 2, 8 and 10. God also wanted to acknowledge what would bind Peter here, i.e. when he refused to admit anyone, for example. This power to bind and to loose in connection with the assembly is given in Matthew 18 to the two or three gathered together to the name of the Lord; and in connection with forgiveness of sins for this earth, it is given in John 20:23 to every disciple who makes use of it, for example, when baptizing another. He then admits him to the kingdom of heaven, or to the assembly, seen as the house of God, and by this fact declares that he recognizes him as one whose sins are forgiven.

Jesus didn’t rename Simon to petros, but Kepha, which is rock in Aramaic. Also Peter gets refereed to as kepha by Paul in his letters. Also there is a word for small rock it is lithos, not petros. Petros and Petras mean the same thing.
