Something wins hands down. The reason is that George’s harmonies move somewhat slowly and the busy bass creates an impression there is something going on.
that's because he can play a more intricate bass line when he's not the lead singer, so John and Georges tunes score the benefit of Paul's full attention on his bass.

I love so many George and John songs, and when I really think about it.. it's Paul's bass line that made the song. Paul wrote unbelievable songs too... but there seems to almost be something magical about crafting his bass lines to John and George's songs. John said in his very candid and critical 1980 Playboy Interview right before he died, that despite the fact that Paul bragged that he could play every instrument, there was nothing like his bass. John said he was the greatest rock n roll bass player ever and that every bass player since essentially copied and branched off his melodic movements.
YES! Both of those are two of my favorite of all time but nobody ever seems to mention them. They’re both genius when in context with their respective songs.

Bassman you did Paul proud....I have plenty of inspiration here and lots of listening to do. Just amazing.
Aaron Doodles Paul played a Tack Piano on the basic track, with George on Rhythm Guitar and Ringo on drums. George finished the rest himself, possibly the next day when the others were busy with something else. By then, they often had more than one studio booked at the same time.

I was looking forward to Rain but it's not here. I listen to it everyday on headphones because of Paul's cool bassline, Ringo's funky drumming, and John's dreamy vocals.
Somewhere along the 60s I discovered that there was actually more than one type of guitar in a rock band. There was a guitar and then there was another type that had only four strings and made a low throbbing humming noise and I learned it was called a bass guitar. Wow, I thought, I love the bass. And like most kids then I thought the Beatles were so cool. One day I asked my older brother "which one of the Beatles plays the bass?". McCartney", he replied. My reaction was "Woa......! My first rock and roll hero - Paul McCartney.
Brilliant. Thanks to this series I learned that Paul's lines were very much in the "swing" jazz tradition. This goes hand-in-hand with his inventive "walking" bass lines, which too many contemporary bassists never bothered to assimilate; e.g. "All My Lovin'." #12 "Something" is a résumé of the McCartney bass style.
What a perfect complement to the song Something, is that bassline. Sublime. Subtle. Melodic. Paul didn't ever phone it in for the other guys' songs. He seems to have always given them his best effort on the basslines.
Something is my favourite bassline of Paul’s, I was so suprised when I first heard a cover of it and noticed this beautiful melody on the bass that just adds so much to the song without you even thinking about it.
I learned how to play Bass at school in the mid 80's because of the playing that Paul had done, so melodic and interesting for when back in the day when Bass players were supposed to be in the background. Paul is a true master of the low end. Thank you for the two videos as early recordings of the Beatles it is difficult to distinguish the exact bass lines.
"Something" ... Bassline like this.. I guess that's why we the same feel like MLTRs "the actor" and Tears4Fears "head over heels" and so much more. Paul is a great influence.
Thanks for adding in the fender jazz. The Hofner just has such poor intonation that it is quite uncomfortable to hear up high on the neck due to tuning. Incredible playing again.
Excellent collection, and very well-played. Some of Paul's most-overlooked super work was on "Sgt. Pepper" where he would go into the studio alone and overdub bass onto the rhythm track. Great example is on a song that is far from a favorite of mine, "Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds". Go back and listen to the bass line, especially in the last minute or so of the song.
No doubt McCa is the best bass guitar player of all time. And most of these walking basslines he is doing while singing at the same time.God,the reason why I picked up my first ever guitar some 25yrs ago. 🇵🇭
