      Ahh
..the best is a matter of opinion. We all love Paul and it is difficulut playing bass whilst singing lead vocals. The Ox's isolated playing live is pure master genius. Geddy Lee, Lemmy or JPJ and many others you could listen to as a bass lead. You might change your opinion. Paul fit the Beatles. He was great but not a bass master solely dedicated to it. The bass was never the "Beatle sound" in the 60s. Come Together is the only real bass stand out for me.

Incorrect. The basic tracks which were recorded on April 20th 1969 consisted of George on bass (track one), Ringo on drums (track two), Billy Preston on organ on some of the takes (track three), Paul on piano (track four), John on guitar (track five) and Paul's guide vocals (track six). A lead vocal was added on Aril 26th, which Paul wasn't satisfied with so further attempts were made throughout July he finally had a result he was happy with on the 23rd. He then added guitar and tambourine on August 8th (the same day that the cover was shot) with the harmony vocals being added on the 11th.
This is all documented and independently verifiable. George even asked Chris Thomas whether the bass scale he was using matched the piano chords which he asked him to play underneath.

@ so? You're saying just because Paul brought him in, he should be eternally grateful, kiss his feet, never raise any issues about how he wanted his song to sound like and be completely ok with his songs being rejected? He's not a bandwagon rider, he can definitely speak up when he's dissatisfied with his bandmates. Paul himself said they were a square and all 4 corners matter.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weirdo Reborn
That is EXACTLY what I am saying. Yes. Get up EVERYDAY and THANK Paul. HARRISON wasn’t going anywhere at 14.
Do you realize just how much he LEARNED watching the top pop composers of a generation on a daily and nightly often 24 hour basis. Perhaps George would have eventually hooked up with a band but it could not be THE BEATLES as there was only ONE BEATLES. George asked his older brother if he should go with John & Paul to Hamburg. Whether or not it was worth it or should he get a JOB? His brother told him to give it a shot and see where it goes. Harrison was great. No question. However, at times he turned on Paul... aligning with John. Paul never belittled George and Paul wasn’t the one choosing songs. George Martin had the final say. It’s common sense. No Paul, no BEATLES. No GEORGE HARRISON of the BEATLES. Do you really believe ATMP would have sold coming from an UNKNOWN??

One McCartney’s great lessons is that he show us the value of a bassist stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight as a band-mate and human being. I wonder if as many people (not just bassists, but all musicians) would pay *quite* as much attention to Paul’s amazing bass work if he wasn’t always so visible at the front of the band. As an example, Paul McCartney’s presence on the stage in those early years is probably the *only reference* point you need to instantly enable a non-musician to distinguish the bass from the guitar.

@@danny1959 That's a solitary example and Paul himself has shown appreciation for it, so it is irrelevant to the point of George being ungrateful. Paul got George into the band, and far from being 'nonsense', it is a very basic fact that everyone should know if they are to have any credibility in a discussion about The Beatles.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dannyeliot
Seriously? Paul introduced GH to JL.
Paul sat next to GH and said “ He should be in the band. John responded “ He should be in bed.” This isn’t a surprise given their ages. However Paul sat next to George while George played RAUNCHY. Paul was delighted with a
“ note perfect” rendition. Again consider JOHN was 16 Paul 15 and George 14 ( rough estimate ) Not only did Paul push and arrange the audition but him being in the middle bridged the age gap. I am not romanticizing Paul. It’s pure logic applied to adolescent behavior especially among boys and more so with a TEDDY BOY like JOHN was at that time. I don’t know-maybe YOU CAN EXPLAIN how George and John would have both met and connected musically? If that hadn’t happened how the HELL would George have ever been a BEATLE? Not saying he wouldn’t have played perhaps in a lesser known band but then we have to address how they ALL but Pete Best benefitted from HAMBURG. Also note that GH has made it clear that although they ALL agreed Ringo helped improve their sound it was him GH who really pushed for Ringo to play with and become a BEATLE. This is ALL RELATIVELY COMMON KNOWLEDGE. So please: feel free to explain yourself.
Prove me wrong. Otherwise YOU are spouting pure NONSENSE.

Aaaannnnddd, on top of all that, I don't believe Macca gets due credit for lifting songs to a different level with his bass inventiveness. Come Together is a classic example, as is If I Needed Someone, Rain etc etc. Great songs, but the bass elevates all of them dramatically. People don't understand the value of bass playing at the best of times, but this guy's contribution is insanely overlooked.

Fun fact, Paul is one of the greatest multi-instrumentalists ever. He even recorded drums for the Beatles when Ringo left during revolver (I think). He also standardised the role of bass in modern music. Originally it was a supplementary force in music, and he popularised it as a driving and sometimes melodic role. His understanding of the importance, layers and parts of music is unmatched. Not even by Jacob Collier or Mozart, or Beethoven or Jack Stratton.
