Why is India worried about the border talks between Bhutan and China? I StudyIQ IAS English

Bhutan and China held their 25th round of boundary talks, that have been held up since the last round in 2016, even as Bhutan’s Foreign Minister Tandi Dorji met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, with both sides saying they want a deal on demarcating the boundaries “soon”. Significantly, this was the first official visit to China by the Bhutanese Foreign Minister, and holding the long pending 25th round of talks indicated substantive progress had been made by the expert groups of officials from both countries.

The border issue is between Bhutan and China, but India realises that when the border issue is resolved, the provinces of Sikkim, Manipur ,Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, formerly the British NEFrontier Agency, would cut cut off the rest of India. And China claims that Arunachal Pradesh is South Tibet, which the British secured from Tibet in 1916 and disputed by China because, while Tibet had autonomous status was still part of China since the Qing Dynasty in the 1600s. India’s line of argument is that former Southern Tibet ( now called Arunachal Pradesh ) was legitimately transferred to the British by Tibet , but China claims sovereignty over Tibet which meant without China’s consent, Southern Tibet is still part of of China. An International Court is likely to hand down a judgement in favour of China and India wouldn’t take that risk. If and when Bhutan agrees to the “ chicken neck “ Sirigiri as part of China, it physically separates those provinces like Nagaland and others who were forcibly annexed into India, by virtue of being administered by Britain before 1947.
