The Tragic Fate Of The SS Morro Castle | History Retold | Absolute History

  • The world’s oceans are as beautiful as they are deadly. Thousands upon thousands of miles of empty water.
    If a ship encounters trouble far from land, there is little those onboard can do- except hope for rescue. Though sinking may seem to be the worst that can happen to a ship at sea, it’s actually fire that creates the most horrific pain and suffering. A fire aboard ship is indiscriminate in its attack, taking the lives of everyone from immigrants seeking a new life to cruise ship elite looking for a good time on the waves. Throughout time there are thousands of stories of horrific fires at sea. The images that tell their tales are remarkable, haunting, and rarely seen. Now, with restored film footage and high definition photo technology, we can look deep inside these seagoing stories of heroism and tragedy to fully understand what happens aboard ship when there is a fire at sea. Because not only does a fire at sea mean a ship is going down, but passengers and crew have two choices: be burned alive or jump into an unforgiving ocean.

    George Rogers started the fire on the Morro Castle. He was a firebug who created incendiary devices and bombs, with multiple other crimes before and after the ship disaster. He later sent a mail bomb to try to kill a police officer investigating him for fraud.

    Considering the fact that you were speaking of ammunition explosions, I'm surprised y'all didn't bring up the December 6th, 1917 explosion of the SS Mont Blanc (a munitions ship) after colliding with the SS Imo in Halifax harbor, damn near leveling the town.

    Such tragedy. Very sad moment in history.
    My 3 kids are veteran USN sailors and one was assigned to the USS Bonhomme Richard. As they were preparing to return to active duty, after an extensive refit, there was a fire in the well deck which was so crammed with gear waiting to be stowed that there was no controlling the blaze. My point being that even aboard a modern ship fire is incredibly dangerous and difficult to control.

    19:20 Never mind mentioning the tug tied to the stern of the Morro Castle that was acting as the ship’s rudder. Her line snapped first causing the loss of control to the Morro Castle. Afterwards, when the MC was free to drift in the wind and waves, is the point when the cable on the Coast Guard cutter snapped. I’m not a fan of condensed history and this is a case in point. There are too many inaccuracies and omissions concerning the Morro Castle tragedy in this video. The fact of the entire matter is more complicated, and even more fascinating, than this video suggests. On a positive note, the video and stills concerning the Morro Castle was interesting. I would recommend those intrigued by the tragedy read “SHIPWRECK: The Strange Fate of the Morro Castle” by Gordon Thomas. It is a great read, well researched, and a nail biting page turner.

    Oh my god this is so full of misinformation and I'm less than eight minutes in. They just said the ship didn't have enough lifeboats for the passengers and crew. On the contrary, it had enough lifeboat capacity for more than three times its full capacity, and it was nowhere near full on its final voyage.
    No point in watching the rest, I'm afraid.

    • @TheCarnivalguy
      @TheCarnivalguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for noting the inaccuracies of the segment on the Morro Castle. I completely agree. The disaster is more complicated than this video suggests, and important facts were omitted entirely. Condensed versions of historical events should be scrutinized and taken with a grain of salt. In this case perhaps the whole salt shaker would be appropriate.

    "The Main's gun could fire at ships or submarines"
    In 1895 there weren't very many submarines to fire at. There may have been a couple worldwide, but they still tended to sink more often than they worked. Just a couple years later submarines began to be functional. However, had there been an enemy with a submarine surfaced, the Main could have fired at it, so the statement is correct.

The morning of the excursion, she sassed back to her mother who punished her by not letting her go. Years later, my mother told that story to a younger friend, who was amazed. The friend's grandmother was supposed to go on that trip but spilled her breakfast down her only good dress. Thank God.

    I think the "Maine" at 23:05 is *a* Maine, but not the Maine. That is, it's the BB-10 Maine launched 1901 and not the 1889 Maine that exploded in Havana.
    Interesting stuff, but kind of a strange documentary the way it bounces back and forth between different ship disasters. They're all united by the "fire at sea" theme, but I think it would have made for a more compelling documentary to just focus on one ship.

    Interesting stories, but the script writer needs to learn to tell a story from beginning to end without veering wildly off course. Each ship's story could have been a series of shorter, less bewildering videos rather than one long, twisting, confusing vid. And really, the narration is a bit much. One can only take so much "DOOM! DOOM! DOOM!" tone before it becomes tiresome.

    If the Morro Castle was indeed running guns to Cuba, you would think the guns would have been off loaded to Cuba and the ship devoid of any weapons or ammo since it was on the return voyage. I had heard a rendition of the disaster as some of the crew were composed of Cuban exiles and at least one of them was a revolutionary type. Supposedly a fire broke out, was extinguished and a second fire set by someone. Perhaps it was an attempt to stop the gun running by a Cuban arsonist or Mr. Rogers who had a sordid past just setting the blaze for his own reasons.

    • @OAleathaO
      @OAleathaO 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably because of the alleged munitions being carried on board back and forth between the US & Cuba. Just like everyone wants to claim mass murder by the Germans by sinking the _RMS Lusitania_ because no one wants to admit there was war materiel on board at the time it was sunk which eliminated it from claiming it was "an innocent passenger ship."

    7:28 - "There are 12 lifeboats on-board; not enough for the 549 passengers and crew." They were reportedly capable of carrying 400 total, according to the British Pathé news website about this disaster. However, the 2 outrageous issues with that statement are: 1) This happened well after the _Titanic_ in which both British & American Boards of Inquiry stated in *_1914_* that, "ships should carry enough lifeboats for all aboard". Despite both British & American policy makers agreeing on the totally unnecessary loss of life on the _Titanic_ was due to an insufficient number of lifeboats, the SOLAS Treaty didn't start to be enforced until 1960. 2) This ship was built *_and_* registered in the USA, which in light of the 1914 recommendations, illustrates a "do as I say not as I do" attitude. 3) Most lifeboats were filled with crew instead of passengers as is claimed on the British Pathé website about this disaster. Granted there could be many reasons for this but I think it partially demonstrates where the crews' interest really was and it probably wasn't the passengers' safety.

    • @harrietharlow9929

    He got a few facts wrong as well, that some simple research would have caught, for instance, Teddy Roosevelt was from New York, not New England. Also he was not elected president in 1901. He was elected Vice President in 1900, became Vice President in March 1901, and became president in September 1901 upon the assassination of William McKinley. These are ones I’m familiar with, makes me wonder about the accuracy of the stuff I’m not familiar with.

    i grew up on Long Island, and am very familiar with the story of the Slocum fire. I've seen the memorial to the victims at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Queens, NY. A contributing factor was the fact that, at the time of the fire, the General Slocum was at the confluence of the East River, the Hudson River, and the Long Island Sound. The competing currents from these three bodies of water give the location the name of Hell Gate.

    Very poorly done, among so much-the Morro Castle wasn't a steam ship, she was a turbo electric vessel, read the comments to find a wealth of corrections. I would also point out that a chunk of the narration around the 50 min mark was lifted directly from Wikipedia.

    Holy Jesus, this segment on the Morro Castle is full if misinformation. First of all, the ship had more than enough lifeboats, and the ship was not even at full capacity. Second, a few minutes in, when it pans in on the ship, it's not even the correct ship. Who approved this, "documentary"? It is full of inaccuracies!

      He was talking about another ship (most specifically a paddle boat/ferry) called General Slocum named after the Civil War hero of New York. It was on June 15, 1904 when the fire started in the East River-SS Morro Castle was in flames a few decades after the General Slocum which was 1934. But they had the same mistakes-not trained for fire drills, & they didn’t prepare passengers for evacuation on time. One of the crew could’ve been careless and all that.

    The absurdly melodramatic delivery and constant OVER emphasis of CERTAIN words is VERY annoying. I will MOST definitely be BLOCKING any OTHER videos from THIS channel. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮

    ...its pronounce, Or is kinny, phonically...I know I was on her in the mid 70s, its cool that she's still around as a dive site, anyway it's named for a battle in the revolution, part of the Saratoga campaign, get this, Benedict Arnold commanding, it was why he turned, he rallied his men and was wounded leading them to victory, wounded in the same leg he was shot in during the Quebec campaign, he had a severe limp and pain from it for the rest of his life...all that and Horatio Gates steals the victory from Arnold, and no promotion that he was promised....sorry rambling

      Titanics outcome did indeed effect shipbuilding, in England. The US held no obligation to follow the English rulings. This is one generation removed from the robber barons. The mindset of the robber barons did rub off, if by no other means than there was no other example of how to do it.

    Its pronounced Oh-risk-kinny... please stop mispronouncing the name of my old boat, do some research for christs sake, you need to get the frickin name of your subject right.... I expect better.... everytime you say it wrong myself along with thousands of my shipmates cringe, it makes your site, 44 sailors died, it's very disrespectful not to say the name of the ship they died on correctly, again do some research, talk to anyone who ever served aboard and can tell you how to say Oriskany....
