First Look: Binary Kinetik Expedition Bike | Titanium 29+ Hardtail

- Binary Bikes is a small bike company based in Arizona that focuses on adventure oriented bikes with titanium frames. They recently sent me the Kinetik: a bike focused on tackling a wide range of long term "expeditions" from days to months long. Featuring tons of mounting locations, a more upright body position, and a middle ground geometry, it's a bike that looks super versatile on paper. In this video, I go over the details and geometry of this bike and then take it for a first ride.
NOTE: I never say it outright, but imply I'm riding a 20" frame. I'm actually on an 18" which at 5'11" I expected to feel a little small, but it fit really well and I don't think I'd want a bigger frame.

I'm glad you're getting all of these different bikes to review.
You and me both!
Great review
People will cream themselves over a bike like this, just because of all the mounting points. Glad it clears 29+ tyres (every bike should!) So when are you hitting up Surly to send you the new Moonlander to review? lol 😃
Yeah I think 95% of people will never take full advantage of all of these mounting points, but for the 5% that do it's an awesome feature.
Also, I've reached out but no response from Surly. I'd love to try it out though.
Interesting your take on chainstay length. Steve (hardtailparty) loves short chainstays. I have the SC Chameleon and hated it in the 415mm, but then again I'm 5'10 and ride a medium. 430mm is much better and I could go longer.
I think it's totally dependent on the terrain you're riding AND your riding style. I'm not a super "playful" rider so short chainstays don't really benefit me. Some of that may be that I ride a lot of fat bikes which can't go super short to begin with, but I don't know...my opinion really changed after getting the LWB. It's going to depend on the person though.

Would you consider this a good frame for a rigid fork? Which fork would you recommend, I have an ENVE Mtn but a Salsa that has mounts might be better.
I’m actually about to throw a rigid fork on as part of the testing. I feel like it’ll be great for that with some plus tires, but you’ll want to make sure it’s a taller fork (500ish mm axle to crown). Normally I’d say yeah a fork with more mounts is better but this has so many mounts on it already I don’t know that it matters haha.
@@RideYearRound true, lol, never seen so many frame mounts.
wish the rear stays are floating like GT/Lapierre
Do you like the Shimano deore drivetrain? I got a 2024 specialized rockhopper sport with Shimano cues but I'm looking at a full suspension bike and the two that I'm looking at both have Shimano deore A lot of people like it but just was wondering your opinion!! Thanks Love your vids
Yep, I really like the latest Deore drivetrain.
Interesting frame! Does the "expedition" intent have any influence in terms of frame feel? How's it feel compared to other ti bikes you've tested?
I'm not sure if there's anything done butting or tubing wise to add compliance (although longer chainstays help with that a bit), but titanium is a good choice for this type of bike in general.
Does this got a tapered head tube??
It’s a straight headtube but it’s oversized to accept tapered steerers.
assuming that the front center is a bit too short - then it might help if the chain stays were longer - but it will definitely be dangerous - as soon as your front wheel starts to slip and turns sideways - you will fly over the handlebars - if it comes to the slightest incline - the weight is distributed 50/50 - and as soon as you hit the brake - things turn out very bad
I'm not sure what you mean here. The ETT and reach are a little shorter than normal, but the front center is still longer than the rear center.
if you want to have a stable ride feeling - i would highly recommend to elongate the front center - only cargo bikes have enough - to not flip over under full breaking
