- This is the latest in our series of conversations with Dr. Lara Sheehi. We will continue to talk about the genocide in Palestine, the resistance, psychic intrusion, and psy-ops. In this discussion we will also tackle feelings of love for the people, and feelings of hatred towards one's enemies.
Lara Sheehi (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar. She is the founding faculty director of the Psychoanalysis and the Arab World Lab. Lara’s work takes up decolonial and anti-oppressive approaches to psychoanalysis, with a focus on liberation struggles in the Global South. She is co-author with Stephen Sheehi of Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine (Routledge, 2022) which won the Middle East Monitor's 2022 Palestine Book Award for Best Academic Book. Lara is on the advisory board for the USA-Palestine Mental Health Network and the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism. Lara is currently working on a new book, From the Clinic to the Street: Psychoanalysis for Revolutionary Futures (Pluto, 2025).

Another amazing and nourishing conversation!! Thank you Jared & Lara! When I was in the military, I attended a training course where the actual repeated mantra by instructors and leadership was, "hate & anger." It can be a very powerful and sustaining (idk how long-term) energy. Adrenaline is another, although having high cortisol levels long-term is devastating to physiology. "The worst thing we can do is hate" mentality reminds me of those who complain about "verbal obscenity" whilst genocide is ongoing; focusing on "politeness/manners," like wtf? What's more offensive? Righteous hate, resolved internally, may be sustainable long-term. Undergirded with revolutionary love...
I’m so glad I came across this conversation. Y’all are brilliant.
Ok i know this is superficial and unrelated to the topic at hand but i am obsessed with how lara does her hair. It's so majestic! Loving this convo so far as always
@dj_enby idk if you can see but she had a wretched of the earth and golden 🔻earring this time too 😂
Needed this! Thank you Dr. Lara and Jared 🙏🏽 From the river to the sea Palestine 🇵🇸 will be Free ✊🏽
Dr. Lara explains a very key thing about the presence of hatred, on both sides of conflict - and the seeds of future war, as much as the current one. Many thanks. best wishes from Valencia Spain.
Thank you both

Does anyone have a link to the Fromm essay from 1942 Dr. Sheehi mentioned? A search only returns results about 'Escape from Freedom' (a key work in its own right).

@@MAKCapitalism Many thanks!
yeah right on. I am not gonna stop hating ecocide and g*cide and land theft and colonial violence and "spiritual" lies about my vulnerable divergent family with a target on our backs, unable to safely travel and live and work and get health care in half of our own country. Not gonna stop hating all that. I am gonna love the crap out of the people fighting it with me, and love the crap out of the suffering earth and the brutalized people.
edit: not "our own country". The country my indentured ancestors from both northern england and australia were shipped to as children to work unpaid for midwestern landowning families. The country I would rather not be in, the country I know must be returned, as massive and as unimaginable as that problem may appear.
Loved your comment so much. Revolutionary clarity! We're not going to normalize this, if we're gonna teach our children one thing it would be to keep resisting against injustice and never normalize or accept it.
53:00 Yemeni support for Palestine is real. Imagine arguring in the late 1970’s and 1980’s that support for Afghanistan was illegitimate because Afghans resisting the Soviet Union were insufficiently righteous!
