Basic Sign Language to use while wearing a Face Mask

  • Deaf people are having a really difficult time understanding people wearing a face mask. Face masks are commonplace and compulsory in some cases thanks to the Covid 19 Pandemic. Learn some basic signs from British Sign Language (BSL) so you can communicate with deaf people.
Many deaf people rely on lip reading for communication and when everyone covers their face with a mask, this presents an obvious challenge. The signs in this video are designed to help you manage brief conversations with deaf people and avoid embarrassing and awkward situations.
Other things you can do to help communicate with deaf people include:
    - Wearing a face mask with a clear window built in revealing your lip movements.
    - Keep a notepad and pen handy to write down messages.
    - Go into a room with less background noise.
    - Consider if it's safe to temporarily remove your face mask for the duration of the conversation.
    - Most importantly, please be patient.
    Thanks for watching!

My friend has a deaf girlfriend so I’ve learnt a lot of sign language from them. What I would say is as a bus driver, learning sign language has helped me communicate with many deaf passengers which is great because I’ve built up a rapport with them. It’s great to be able to help them

You're good at adapting to your audience. You're probably the first TH-cam that I've been able to properly learn off of. I've tried a few times over last couple of years but since finding your videos I've actually been able to remember more than random words that have slightly amusing actions (like bullshit or octopus xD)

Thank you for clarifying the dominant hand stuff as a left handed person I would always worry that in different hands signs would mean different things lol

Thanks very much. I’m going to send a link to this to friends and co-workers.
There are many people like me who have hearing loss and depend on lip reading to communicate, even though we don’t know sign language. If everyone knew a few of these basic signs, it would help us too.
I just started learning BSL during lockdown. Your videos are excellent. You are doing important work.

Hi I have just started BSL as I have always wanted to learn it. I have no real reason for learning it other than i enjoy it and it could be handy (pun intended) later on in life. I am absolutely loving your videos and am learning it so quickly thanks to you! Thanks so much!

Also even though I am right handed it seems that from watching your videos and trying to mirror it I have become left hand dominant. Would this be a problem?

Thank you so much Commanding Hands for these videos. The shop I work at is making every effort to be more accessible to all customers with disabilities and a few staff want to learn BSL but it is very expensive and hard to find a course. So I have pointed them in the direction of these videos because they are very clear and so helpful for BSL. The man doing the signing is so good and extremely clear in his signing.

Hello Dan, these videos have been so helpful for me to communicate over long distances with my mum and sister as they are both hard of hearing. If you haven’t yet, could you please do a video about the BSL structure? Like how in English, you would ask “What is your name?” Whereas in BSL, you would ask “Your/You name what?”

For the signs that require both hands, are there alternatives that can be done with one hand? For example I have to walk with a cane and need one hand to support myself, which may make those quite difficult

i have a question, i know stuff like facial expressions (ex. raise your eyebrows, smile, etc) are really important in bsl but i have problems which make it difficult to do stuff like that on command, do you know if there are any possible alternatives or is it something i’d just have to try and do?
