I served a deaf customer today and I managed fairly well despite my lack of BSL knowledge, I was able to infer a lot of her requests through context, and I was at least able to thank her and say goodbye at the end. She used the notes app on her phone when she needed to so she was able to get what she needed. That was yesterday. I'm so glad this video exists so I can make the same transaction easier for other deaf customers I might meet some day. I hope I see her again, she was really nice :)

I had a customer come in yesterday and he used the self checkouts but had an issue which I needed to move him over onto my till for. I left that interaction really upset that I couldn’t communicate with him properly. I’ve spent an hour watching your videos and I could confidently have a conversation with him now, I can’t wait until he comes back in!

I started learning BSL around 3 weeks ago. I have learnt so much from your videos. I work in subway and occasionally get deaf people come into the store. It is hard to understand what they are asking for sometimes however with the help of your videos it’s becoming more clear and easy to work with them. I can see by their reaction they are appreciative when I have used BSL, and I always let them know I only know a small amount. Thanks so much for the help :)

Although my BSL vocabulary is very limited, I managed to communicate with the lady who came in the other day, which I’m sure she appreciated as she has been a client here for years and no one seems to have made an effort to communicate with her till this point. I look forward to her coming in again and becoming more confident with sign language and conversing with her. Thanks for your videos Dan!

These videos are very cool. I recently started working with a deaf gent and most find it difficult to communicate with him and don't even bother. Only a few of us try to include him by learning to communicate. I've found sign language very interesting as I find a lot of it very literal by design and it fascinates me. My friend teaches me what he can but these videos are endlessly helpful in taking the weight off of him having to try and explain everything to me. Wonderful job Dan.

Hello Dan - I learnt to finger spell 60 years ago. In those days the letter W was inverted, and Z was similar to the sign for BISCUIT, unless I had a bad teacher. My question is about C and D. I am right-handed and have always made the C shape with my left hand and added my right index finger to make D, but it seems that I should be using my right hand for C and adding my left index finger for D. Does it matter? BTW - keep up the good work; love your tutorials especially the tempo and varying views.

hiya! so i work at mcdonalds, and i took out an order to a mobile order. and i always check the persons order to make sure it lines up with the receipt right. and i go to ask, and the customer was deaf. so, i know very basic signs right, but in a panic i mange to ask to see her phone and check the order. but i felt so guilty for not being able to properly communicate so,,, i am trying very hard to learn these signs. would you be able to tell me how to sign "what did you order?" and "who placed the order?" the bsl equivalent. i cant find it anywhere, and it would be so helpful.
this video is so good, thankyou so much or creating and sharing it. keep going

I am learning BSL to try and assist in getting a job working in a school. There are lots of resources on the internet but I find your videos the most informative and easy to follow. I would like to have a formal certificate or qualification that I can show to confirm I have learnt BSL (at least to level 1 or 2). Can you do a course that will give me the accredited qualification I need (I am willing to pay for the course if required)

Question: I’ve got a bit of a disorder in one my right pinkie finger, which makes it difficult raise or lower it properly, which makes signing numbers a bit awkward on it as my dominant hand. My 3s and 4s look very similar as a result. Would there be any issue if I had to switch hands occasionally for signing certain things, or should I try and use my left hand as my dominant hand? Thanks! Your videos are really helping me!

I had a question about this. I know a lot of deaf people also read lips and so people mouth the words they're signing too. Would it be better to mouth the translation or the literal BSL word order? For example "What are you looking for?" or "Looking what?" Hope that makes sense and tysm for such a helpful video!
