  • Norfolk & Western 611 N&W 611 from Manassas - Front Royal, VA | The American Excursion
The Spirit of Roanoke, N&W 611, rides again! This ultra HD production features unique ON AND OFF train shots of the Norfolk and Western 611 and railfan maps to guide you along the way! The Norfolk and Western 611 is presented by The Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia.
The Norfolk & Western J Class 4-8-4 #611 is seen here in “The American”, the first three 611 steam excursions of the Virginia Tour, which also happen to be the first three 611 excursions in more than 20 years!
In this production, the N&W 611 is seen traversing the B-Line, a 50 mile long stretch of track between Manassas, VA and Front Royal, VA with multiple signals, and 4 defect detectors along the way that connect Norfolk Southern’s ‘Washington District’ and ‘Hagerstown District’. The B-Line used to be an old Civil War rail route. In the 1900’s it was acquired by the Southern Railway. When the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western railway became Norfolk Southern in 1982, the B-Line became a lightly used route, carrying 2-3 trains a day. In 2007 however, Norfolk Southern began work on the B- line, as part of the Crescent Corridor project, to make it safe for heavy intermodal traffic. The main reason for doing this was to bypass Washington, D.C.’s rail congestion. They made major track curvature improvements in Manassas and Front Royal junctions to alleviate the need for speed restrictions, as well as put in multiple passing sidings along the 50 mile stretch. Today, the B-Line sees 12-14 trains per day and plays a major role in freight efficiency!
Norfolk Southern, given its rail heritage with the old N&W Railway, was heavily involved in the restoration of the Norfolk and Western 611. They agreed to run steam excursions again throughout the east coast to spark interest in the rail industry, and in America’s rail history. In this production, the Norfolk and Western 611 is shown through the eyes of a young railfan who does not know, nor remember the steam era, or even the steam excursions of the 80’s and 90’s. However, I hope to have captured the N&W 611 properly.
If you’ve made it this far, THERE IS A POSSIBILTY THAT DUE TO THE STUPIDITY OF SOME RAILFANS, THAT NORFOLK SOUTHERN THINKS IT MAY BE UNSAFE TO RUN ANY MORE EXCURSIONS, AND WILL NOT DO THESE EXCURSIONS ANY LONGER, UNLESS THEY GET GREAT REVIEWS AND GOOD PUBLICITY.
TELL NORFOLK SOUTHERN TO DO THIS AGAIN! IF YOU LIKED SEEING THE NORFOLK AND WESTERN J CLASS #611, WHETHER HERE OR IN PERSON, YOU MUST LET THEM KNOW IN ORDER TO KEEP THE 611 FIRED UP FOR YEARS TO COME!
    Thank You Very Much,
    Railfan Rowan

    Hi Rowan !
Congrats ! You didn't only shot pictures - you told an complete exiting story.
You combined it all to a single impression: The engine, the people watching, the people travelling and the ambient locations.
Very professional handling of the camera: moving, zooming and tilting, phantastic view positions.
Up to now the best I've seen.
    Greetings from Germany!

Rowan, you were already good in 2015. I just subscribed after seeing your train derailment at Harper's Ferry. You're even better now in 2019/20. You could have a career in documentaries. On camera presenting and off camera production. Well spoken, knowledgeable and respectful young man. You're a natural at this. Good luck to you!

This is a fantastic video. You had photos and explained where you took the shots. I wish more videos included information like that.I have stood next to this machine in Roanoke a couple of times in years past since my daughter and her family live in Lynchburg. It's hard to appreciate the size of a steam locomotive unless you stand next to it. Cranks the size of your thigh and the top of the drivers (plus ties and rail) over your head. 1218 was on the track right next to it. More big. Really big. And 611 will do over 100 mph with a train and weighs 250 tons. I am amazed that all of these enormous cranks and valves work perfectly and the machine stays on the track in one piece.Again, congratulations on this video. Do more. Now on to 1218.

great job! i rode 611 a few times and had a blast. used to belong to the nrhs in the seventies, had the luck of being able to be a car host on the lookout mountain. we were supposed to go to front royal, but instead went to Charlottesville due to flooding on the b line.just as a matter of information, many years ago this track was not signalled. they used to have to get track warrents on that line.

Very well done video sir. I sure wish we had operational steam engines up here in Canada. It seems that CN and CP are allergic to steam engines. CP once had Royal Hudson 2860 and 2816 in excursion service but they haven't run in several years. Among others there are two 2-10-4 Class T1c Selkirk Locomotives left, 5931 and 5935. The 5935 was the last ever steam locomotive built in Canada. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works it was delivered to the CPR on March 12 1949. They were the largest and heaviest steam engines in the British Commonwealth.

All I can say, is.. "Let the past legends of thunder return to the rails!"
These beasties are the true iron horses. Diesels may be better for certain reasons, but they don't deserve to be called "horses" at all.
Beauties like these are almost alive, belching fire, smoke and steam, and feasting on fuel and water.
Heck, they even have some of the nastier aspects of living creatures (such as getting rid of waste products.)
I say, if your railroad can afford to use steam every now and then, why not do so?
Why not have these beautifully preserved Iron Dragons do their jobs, and haul the occasional revenue train?
The Public Relations boost your company would score would be well worth the costs to maintain these magnificent beasts of burden.
And as for Amtrak, just like any other rail company, they should rent out a few of these magnificent Iron Dragons, the ones that can do high speed, and couple them to their premier passengers trains. Let them run like the wind, and watch your company's positive impact on the industry's PR skyrocket!
For that matter, why not put some smaller steam locomotives to work switching freight cars and passenger coaches in yards and terminals? That would also boost PR slightly.
