Yes, the singer is Eddie Vedder. And he is incredible. He always throws his entire being into every lyric he writes and sings. Pearl Jam was a big part of grunge, but, imo, they can be better defined as a classic rock band. And while they were one of the biggest bands of the 90’s, they continue to have a huge fan base, and their concerts are still selling out in arenas around the world.
This MTV Unplugged concert was one of the best ever. I would suggest you continue listening to more from it, specially “State of Love and Trust “, and a great version of “Porch”. Pearl Jam refused to do many music videos, but two definitely worth watching are the official UNCENSORED version of “Jeremy” (based on a true story), and the brilliantly animated “Do The Evolution”. This is a very deep rabbit hole, worth jumping into! Enjoy!

its grunge brother. The anthem of the 90's, but so much more. I put this CD in my juke box every night to help me fall asleep and forget how difficult things were. This music spoke to so many of us that needed a voice. Truth is, most of my Gen X friends suffered silently and grunge music spoke for us.

On top of the powerfully emotional delivery, the lyrics are heartachingly beautiful. This from their debut album "Ten" (1990). It has to be one of the great debut albums in rock history - a masterpiece.
Pearl Jam is considered a grunge band. In fact, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains & Pearl Jam pretty much *define* grunge. Grunge is kind of a blend of rock, hard rock, metal & punk, with Pearl Jam being more toward the rock region of the spectrum (Nirvana is more punk, Soundgarden more metal). A big part of what makes it grunge is a kind of artistic ethos embracing angst, anger, alienation & related emotions & themes. It was very much a reaction *against* the "hair metal" / glam style of heavy rock that dominated the 80's. It really saved heavy rock from the superficial banal tropes of "party rock" that resulted from its own commercial success in the 80s.

I just saw PJ a few weeks ago twice..that is my happy place. Best live band out there. It is more than a concert..it is a surreal life changing experience. Ed is like our friend..his crowd interaction..his empathy..his passion..his storytelling. He let's us in to his deepest emotions and we soak in every second and then crave it again and again. The voice that touches the soul..and let me tell ya i still get goosebumps and I've heard this song a zillion times over the past several decades. The guitar solos in today's versions send shivers down my spine

The imperfect vocals is a hallmark of Grunge. Also drop D tuning but don't think Black is drop D. A lot of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden's songs are. Very emotional and vulnerable. You have a good ear.

This is from MTV Unplugged. This performance and Nirvana were two of the best performances on that show. Grunge was a genre born from the Seattle music scene of the early 90's. Bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden , Alice In Chains and Nirvana were at the forefront of that movement. Eddie makes you feel every lyric. His vocals are so captivating. Enjoy the ride discovering this music. There's so much to get into.

First I really appreciated your reaction, second as a metal fan you might like some of Pearl Jam's shreddier stuff. They are pretty versatile but if you search for Go/Animal from the Vs. 93 tour you will see they can hit pretty hard.

I really enjoy your reaction but I have a respectful suggestion. You paused 10 times during this song 😳 many times right in the middle of a lyric. When you weren't paused, you talked over it. Each time, you commented on his voice. Facts 💯 Eddie's voice is stellar. What you missed by doing that were the majority of the lyrics to this beautiful song about unrequited love. By the end, you weren't able to share any thoughts on it. Please try to pause at the end of a verse or chorus so the flow isn't broken & you can share your feedback. It makes a world of difference! Thanks 😊

@@Sohum Anything from their Unplugged, but the standard reactions are their performance of Porch at Pinkpop in '92, and rightfully so. The uncensored music video of Jeremy is also a reactor favorite. I like some of the "deep cuts" that don't get as much attention. Even Flow, State of Love and Trust, Oceans, or Porch from Unplugged. Release from Holland in '92 is also amazing.

Since you asked for suggestions, here’s one for you: th-cam.com/video/Tgb1GgpkX7s/w-d-xo.html This is Nothing But Thieves, a British band who have been really underrated for a while but are finally starting to see some recognition. They are incredible live, and their vocalist Conor Mason has the best voice I’ve ever heard. I was at this concert and it sounded even better in the arena! By the way you have a lovely speaking voice, you’re really nice to listen to 🙂
