Mariah's public speaking skill is so underrated. In numerous award shows her speech never failed. Teleprompter or not she looks natural and in control, and her choice of words is like a breath of fresh air.
I was thinking the same thing! She totally natural and on point when addressing crowds.
Out of the many, many speeches I've heard her give throughout her career, her Icon award speech from a few years back is probably the most touching speech I've ever heard an artist give. She writes her speeches from the same internal place that she writes her lyrics and you're right, her skill is underrated by far.
I believe Mariah wrote this speech. She’s a very intelligent woman. In the past two years she’s let down the diva act a lot. Before she was in a down place. Now, she’s happier. Mariah has always been a sweetheart. This is no shock to me. Loved her speech and I’m so proud she was recognized, especially for camp Mariah. ❤️

This my thought exactly just listening! She is a unique superstar; quirky, elusive, intelligent and has a sense of humor which comes across very well in her voice BUT many people don't get her at all but I ALWAYS have as a long time fan since I was in middle school, I'm now in my 30s. Her unique warm, fairly deep speaking tone its really distinct and the slight rasp was endearing and emotive like her singing voice but her singing is more expressive. I really enjoyed her showing more personality because maybe more people will see what I always saw.

She and also Celine Dion is the perfect example of the 90s boom. Massive album sales, big huge publicity, magazine covers, tv appearances, etc. She was the biggest at a time when the market was at its peak. The hype was crazy.

Shes also the biggest selling artist in history in the Asian continent. Shes easily among the top 20 best selling artist ever in history. When u consider the fact that there are hundreds of millions of singers throughout history who failed to reached just 0.001 percent of what she reached, shes definitely not overrated.

Mariah’s entire diva character is just an act. She actually really intelligent and very well spoken and driven. The way she constructed her life story in her book, they way she writes her songs , encourages her fans even when she was at her lowest is just beyond. She really is a pioneer and helped save a lot of people. She is a gem in this industry even when they didn’t treat her like it .
I absolutely stan this woman. She is everything and she has every single right reason to be a diva. I find it ridiculous that people only acknowledge and admire legends that passed away and dislike living legends. Mariah Carey is the one of the few legends that still walks on this Earth. She has been through it all. You can never underestimate how tough this woman is. MJ, Whitney, and Amy all went down from the public criticism. Mariah is the one who never went into the dark path and has been fighting for underprivileged from the beginning. I don’t understand why some people don’t like her. It is really sad to see people hate someone and suddenly like someone when they pass away. We need to love this beautiful legend when she is still alive and gives her the respect she totally deserves!!!!
a diva is not an insult. the perception of "diva" as a bad thing is simply driven by men who feel their 'masculinity' and power threatened in the face of a powerful, assertive woman.

I was raised by a single mother, and as a scared gay boy, my friends were all girls, and growing up I have found strength in many people. The strongest of all the people I know are women. Without women, the world fails. Love to you all! Mariah Carey deserves all the praise and accolades, and I am so incredibly happy that her music is in my life, for it saved me in some of my darkest times. She pushed through and ended up stronger. That makes me hopeful that I can and will too.

Of all the speeches I've ever seen Mariah give -- and it's a lot -- her Icon award speech is probably the most touching and heartfelt thing I've ever seen her do. She's smart and she knows how to play her part but, occasionally, she forgets to act like a diva and shows just how human and down-to-earth she really is.
For anyone who's never seen/heard the Icon award speech, it's definitely worth looking up.
