Ok, I'm getting a lot of flack about not wearing a helmet (which I do 99% of the time). With all due respect to the helmet scolders, this stance doesn't help the cycling movement. As cyclists, we constantly make decisions about risk. Helmet use does not eliminate the risk of injury entirely. Is it safer? yes? Is it a failsafe? No way. The more people we have riding bikes, with helmets or not, is what's going to make us safer. What we need to do, as Clarence said many times in this video, is to focus energy on improving cycling infrastructure. If you really want to make riding safer, join a local advocacy group and get more safe lanes in your town. If you wanna wear a helmet every time you get on a bike, that's great, but scolding people for not wearing helmets takes the movement backwards. I don't hate on all the Euros for not wearing helmets. All I care about is that you ENJOY YOUR RIDE, HOWEVER YOU WANT!
There's a balance to be had. I choose to wear a helmet most of time. That aside, studies have indicated that helmets can be a deterrent for some people to choose bikes for their transportation needs. I would much rather see people choose a bike over a car, even if it's without a helmet. The health benefits of cycling and the environmental harms of driving are both well documented. Note: The Netherlands has more people on bikes than any other country and virtually no one wears a helmet there, yet they have a very low head injury rate compared to other countries. Safe bike infrastructure is far more important than foam hats when it comes to riding safely. And thanks to cycling, people in the NL have a longer life expectancy than we do in the US. So helmet or no helmet, just ride.
Love those helmetless parents who care about their helmet-wearing children. The first time I saw someone wearing a helmet in the 80s I thought he was an idiot. After 50 some years of riding, and two of 3 broken helmets that were no fault of my own (the other was cross country mountain biking) , helmets can save lives. For the low cost , why not? We should not scold or nag. We should just make it illegal as not wearing a seat belt.

Totally agree with you Ryan. I sometimes wear a helmet, but often do not here in NYC. I’m around your age, and grew up in a time where kids rode all the time without helmets. I did fine. Like you say, it’s a calculated risk just like anything else. And I leave it to everyone to decide what is best for them. I often tell my friends who scold me about not wearing a helmet...that they eat meat - which increases the risk of heart disease...THAT is a calculated risk too! Funny analogy, but it makes sense. Ha ha.
There's an app available in NYC, and maybe elsewhere as well, called Reported, where reports of cars in bike lanes, running lights, etc. can be submitted as non-emergency complaints to NYPD and also sent out on the app's Twitter feed.
I would just like to say, “Bravo” to NYC for all that has been accomplished to accommodate bicycle transportation. I remember when there was no such thing as a bicycle lane. You truly did take your life in your hands on a bike. Now they have that beautiful area on the West Side Highway, bike lanes, access over bridges-it is WONDERFUL! There are so many people that complain on You Tube that there “isn’t anything” for bicycles in NY. Yes there is more that needs doing, but we’ve come a LONG way, baby! :)

Hello amigos y amigas! Who wants to go to NYC and ride bikes?? Have any of you ridden there? What is your greatest fear while riding a bike on busy streets? What types of infrastructure improvements are being made in your towns for bicycles?
My partner and I commute 7 miles together into the LES Manhattan from Flatbush Brooklyn. Then I ride back into Brooklyn for my job. We can’t get enough of riding in Manhattan. Having a set route makes even riding in Brooklyn get a little tired. However it’s always exciting to ride in Manhattan. We rented a tandem up at Central Park for our 4 year anniversary last weekend. It got pretty monotonous doing laps in the park so when we got back up to the top we rode it back in the street down Central Park West. Riding in NYC is amazing. I feel privileged to be able to ride here every day. It can be crazy and unbearably unpleasant during the evening rush hour. There are definitely places I don’t like to be at that time of day but you get used to the traffic. Also there are so many different routes and amazing places to see you. You can always take the scenic route through a park or some greenway to escape the traffic. Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island are sadly behind on the receiving end of biking infrastructure but the city has been making progress thanks to pressure from advocacy groups like Transportation Alternatives and Bike NY. Thanks for the great videos and all of the touring videos as well.
Biggest Pain in the *** is the amount of idiot uneducated shouldn’t be allowed to drive drivers! People opening doors towards you People comatose on their phones stepping off the curb into bike lanes. Trucks have NO CHOICE!, but to park in bike lanes or traffic lanes due to BIKE LANES!. There’s no such thing as loading docks. Traffic agents have a field day writing tickets to deliverers, ( soda, beer trucks, UPS, FED EX,etc) while they’re double and triple parked. It’s insane.
Hi, great video! My commute is biking down 2nd Ave and up 1st Ave in Manhattan and I love it! I came from biking in Minneapolis before moving here and I feel like there is definitely more order to it in NYC, and I think I feel safer biking in busy Manhattan traffic because the flow is predictable, especially with the big green bike lanes. The scariest thing I encounter while riding is cars turning left and cutting into the green bike lane without checking for cyclists. It's usually not too much of a problem if you always look alive as a cyclist and also because traffic doesn't go very fast. In Minneapolis, which is pretty bike-friendly, there are a lot of busy streets with blind corners because of copious on-street parking, and even on the wide streets, you might be the only cyclist, so your presence can be a surprise to drivers, which can be unnerving. There's a pretty good bike path network there though too. Anyway, as someone who loves to drive and bike, fun and safe biking in NYC is a lot like good, defensive driving - always do your best to be in control of your vehicle, whether that's a bike or something motorized, and be ready to respond to circumstances on the road. Glad to see you out having fun in NYC!!
Also yeah, Tony NYC is SOOOO right about people on their phones who mindlessly step out into the bike lane, ugh... I use my bell a fair amount and a few nice words from time to time

I walk by that Ghost Bike numerous times when I'm in the city. It was so fun to see you feature it in the video, though I am mindful that the reason for its being is a sad one. I also agree w/you about feeling safe on a bike in the city. I'm a small-town guy and actually feel quite safe on a bicycle in New York. Drivers there -- at least in the areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn that I've ridden in -- have been nothing but polite, and I am similarly mindful and do my best to avoid being in the way.
Dude's so right about the connection you get when riding together with your kid. I have a shotgun seat on my MTB and when me and my son is out riding we have the best conversations where we really connect. Love it!
Ugh. I remember taking the Pulaski Bridge before they added the bike lane. It was terrible. You'd be dead on the road, you'd be mowing down pedestrians on the path. Glad to see they added that. It's been a while.
You're in my hometown. You should cycle the Hudson River Greenway on the west side of Manhattan from South ferry going North to the foot of the George Washington Bridge where the Little Red Lighthouse is located. It's 12 miles and some of the best cycling in NYC.
I ride from my home in Weehawken NJ to Bayonne over the Bayonne Bridge to the Staten island . Then take the ferry over to the NYC Hudson river park all the way up to the GW bridge back to NJ . Then on the NJ river walkway all the way back to Weehawken . !! Once a week . Now that the Bayonne rebuild bridge open up !!

Pauls.Adventure It is pretty amazing! A lot of bike people talk shit because there were so many people last year but I’ve ridden twice and never had a bad experience. My partner has done it four times and it’s always been great. Nothing like having the NYC streets all to ourselves even if we have to ride all day in the rain.
I'm not a scolder......but I do want to make sure your safe and around for a while to make all your great videos......like this one! I will be heading down this summer..........Queens is now on my list. BTW.......I love Caseys Videos!!
New York is getting better every year! Sometimes there are a few setbacks, like losing a protected lane in Inwood after repaving (they decided not to paint it back in...going to vote for a different rep. next time around). Riding the Riverside parkway, or up through the Bronx on the Putnam Trail into Yonkers, or over the many bridges, down to Rockaway Beach, around and around Prospect Park, through Queens to the Kissena Velodrome... There are so many miles of lanes and places to see, to eat at, to hang out, this city keeps on giving.
Brooklyn/Queens Greenway and over towards Rockaway Beach is unbeatable, great views and you get to blow by traffic in a separated bike lane (oh this is a 4 yr old post, oh well, tis still true)
Thanks for the video! It has great information. We’re coming to NYC with our bikes next week (November). I hope it’s not too cold there yet. We’re coming from Ottawa, Ont where right now it’s -10 celcius with snow everywhere so I know at least it will be warmer than here!

Love this video! I was just in NYC for the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the great cycling infrastructure. I had several great rides on a citibike, both on pathways and roads. I get so frustrated by the helmet scolds as well. I agree that cycling is all about managing risk, and I think safety is directly tied to infrastructure and awareness of cyclists. In my small Canadian city, I would never ride anywhere without a helmet (also, it's required by law!). But I'm not going to judge the thousands of New Yorkers (or Danes, or Dutch people) who cycle every day without helmets....they know what they're doing!
Couldn't pay me enough to go there again, much less ride there. But if I did, would definitely want a fixed gear 54x16 with chopped flat bars and 32mm tires. To be fair, does look a bit nicer than I would have expected.

You're the expert Ryan, but I've ridden Manhattan / Queens / Staten Island / Bronx - x3 times, and NEVER had a problem at all. The drivers in the U.K. are far more intolerant . NYC is cool 😃. Great, crystal clear content Ryan. 👍🏻
Well, if the drivers in the UK are more intolerant than Americans drivers then US drivers must be a shit load better than Aussie drivers! Because in my experience, UK drivers are a lot more tolerant and respectful than ours down under!
Ryan, come back in May for the 5 Boro Bike Tour! 30,000 cyclists on closed boulevards 6 lanes wide. Great views of the city, riders and bikes of all shapes and sizes, and a great finish festival in Staten Island. 47 miles of heaven!
There are also BLM protest rides on Friday evenings. Although I have mixed feelings about the BLM movement (the cause is righteous, but the organization itself is racist/anti-Semitic/anti-Asian garbage), the feeling of riding around the city in a large pack of people (masked, of course) while being cheered on by supporters is a lot of fun.
Two people who got me into foot powered transportation in one video (iirc some Netherlands videos)! Still have a car to get around town (~20 min drives), but anything after that is public transportation
I love bike riding in New York City.. It has changed for the better over the years... love the added bike lanes & what they have done along the East River.. Love Central Park.. Hoping to do 5 Boro Bike ride again in May 2020.. I once did a 3 day bike ride from Boston to Penn Station.. That was Super Fun, sleeping in tents on UConn football field.. then in Bridgeport CT.. at Seaside Park.. Keep the great videos coming..
We have a bike lane on one of the major roads in town but if a car needs to cross it to turn into a store's parking lot they often don't yield to bicyclists (this has been my experience). I have had too many near misses (hit once in another state - same scenario) as such I don't ride nearly as much as I would like.
I biked there a couple years ago, mostly with friends but I was by myself part of the time. I'm used to 40+ MPH traffic going past me in the city where I live, so the traffic in NYC felt busy but less speedy. I quickly got used to dodging potholes & cars & biked faster than I normally would. I liked biking there more than walking & taking trains like I had in previous visits - it was such a great way to see the city. I can't wait to come back and ride again! Especially want to bike with Clarence & family!
Actually, the cyclist near-collision @2:33 was caused (in part) by the other cyclist going in the wrong direction. I'm not excusing the truck driver from parking in a bike lane.

2:35 not allowed to unload in the bike lane or ¨salmon¨ down a one way street the wrong way... this stuff is pretty common in NYC and collisions can happen really quickly!
The numerous bike lanes that have been installed since I started bike commuting in NYC in 1995 have helped make biking in NYC a lot safer than it was when I first started but I still wouldn't ride without a helmet in NYC except maybe on Governor's Island where there are essentially no cars, but thanks again for showing how feasible biking is in this town where I was born and have lived in and around for 48 years!
More biking, more better! Love to see cycling grow, people getting healthier, being closer to each other and nature. What's not to like? In NY to meet the Priority folks? What a great place to ride. I remember the first time I ever rode a bike in NYC. I was on the Williamsburg Bridge and I was passed by someone doing a wheelie the entire length of the bridge
I just experienced a fun and wild adventure using the city bikes to go from (40th Street and 9th Ave) to the MOMA. A few car drivers were impatient with me and one told me to go to the side. I was under the impression that I could take up the lane (no bike lane at the time) so long as I kept with traffic flow, signaled, and stayed off the sidewalk (impossible anyways with the density of pedestrians). Pedestrian barriers that separate bicycles made sense around construction areas but can someone clarify where exactly the driver wanted me to go?
I've found NYC to be a great place to ride. Yes it's insanely busy, but no one gets their panties in a bunch because you're riding your bike (ain't nobody got time for that...they just go around you). I've never had a bad experience riding bikes in NYC. Even in Boulder I've had motorists do various not so nice things (usually just yelling or cutting you off).
Very cool you visited NYC! This is my town, and I love riding here. Central Park in particular & the dedicated bicycle lanes are great. The unprotected bike lanes are scary tho. Cabs pull over in front of you, and people step out from behind illegally parked trucks all the time. I much prefer taking my chances weaving in & out of traffic than riding the bike lanes in those areas. But riding in NYC is definitely a blast. Wish i knew you were here, i would have told you the best places to get a burrito! 🌯
Love NYC! visited for the first time last year. Had a really good time and did all the touristy stuff. I wanted to use the citi bikes but my wife was not comfortable riding one in the city. Maybe next time. My city is Omaha and we have a long way to go with biking. There are very few bike lanes and our bike paths don’t hook up and make destinations easier. It’s very disappointing as we are growing, but money doesn’t seem to go to biking. A few years ago the city admins even fired our “bike ambassador”, so that should tell you something about our progress. Our neighbor state, Iowa does much better accommodating bikes. I wish our city leaders would learn from them as Omaha has so much potential. Lastly, I’m most scared of cars hitting me from behind so I turn on my light when I think about it. Also, bright shirts help too.
Wow I've haven't checked out Queens in a while. Key point " if you know what you are doing." Sometimes you can't use the cross walks with out getting hit.

So I would like to cycle in the city even if I am not an tourist but a resident myself. My goal is to draw common and uncommon landmarks here in nyc. I wish I knew something about parking my bike and investing the right gear. But I like to be stationed and getting my lunch without having the ability to constantly looking out for my bike. Having the ability to get to the place either on foot or by cycling I would like to take part of. That I wish to accomplish this year.

A few weeks ago, I'm riding NYC (1st Ave northbound), and see a trash truck ahead in the bike lane. I slow, about half a block away, making the assumption that he's going to pull out after picking up some bags. The truck actually backs up after that. So I come to a complete stop, with what I thought was plenty of room between me and the truck. The guy on the back of the truck (roughly the size of a refrigerator) stepped off the truck and took two backward steps right into my stationary bike. The language he used was apropos of what you might think a NYC sanitation hauler might use. I started to argue that he was in the bike lane, and that I was at a complete standstill. When the driver got out to start in on the conversation, I knew it was more important to be alive than right. I made my apologies and moved on to a great day of riding.

I rode from Chicago to New York last year and loved riding around New York!! You have to keep your eyes open but I never felt unsafe.

You're in my hometown. You should cycle the Hudson River Greenway on the west side of Manhattan from South ferry going North to the foot of the George Washington Bridge where the Little Red Lighthouse is located. It's 12 miles and some of the best cycling in NYC.
Experience The Greenway last month and it was great!
That's easily my favorite bike path!
Wow I have trouble cycling even in a smaller city but NYC wow that seems very intimidating to me. So glad they becoming more and more bike friendly.

I ride from my home in Weehawken NJ to Bayonne over the Bayonne Bridge to the Staten island . Then take the ferry over to the NYC Hudson river park all the way up to the GW bridge back to NJ . Then on the NJ river walkway all the way back to Weehawken . !! Once a week . Now that the Bayonne rebuild bridge open up !!

Pauls.Adventure It is pretty amazing! A lot of bike people talk shit because there were so many people last year but I’ve ridden twice and never had a bad experience. My partner has done it four times and it’s always been great. Nothing like having the NYC streets all to ourselves even if we have to ride all day in the rain.

New York is getting better every year! Sometimes there are a few setbacks, like losing a protected lane in Inwood after repaving (they decided not to paint it back in...going to vote for a different rep. next time around). Riding the Riverside parkway, or up through the Bronx on the Putnam Trail into Yonkers, or over the many bridges, down to Rockaway Beach, around and around Prospect Park, through Queens to the Kissena Velodrome... There are so many miles of lanes and places to see, to eat at, to hang out, this city keeps on giving.
Brooklyn/Queens Greenway and over towards Rockaway Beach is unbeatable, great views and you get to blow by traffic in a separated bike lane

Thanks for the video! It has great information. We’re coming to NYC with our bikes next week (November). I hope it’s not too cold there yet. We’re coming from Ottawa, Ont where right now it’s -10 celcius with snow everywhere so I know at least it will be warmer than here!

Love this video! I was just in NYC for the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the great cycling infrastructure. I had several great rides on a citibike, both on pathways and roads. I get so frustrated by the helmet scolds as well. I agree that cycling is all about managing risk, and I think safety is directly tied to infrastructure and awareness of cyclists. In my small Canadian city, I would never ride anywhere without a helmet (also, it's required by law!). But I'm not going to judge the thousands of New Yorkers (or Danes, or Dutch people) who cycle every day without helmets....they know what they're doing!

Couldn't pay me enough to go there again, much less ride there. But if I did, would definitely want a fixed gear 54x16 with chopped flat bars and 32mm tires. To be fair, does look a bit nicer than I would have expected.

You're the expert Ryan, but I've ridden Manhattan / Queens / Staten Island / Bronx - x3 times, and NEVER had a problem at all. The drivers in the U.K. are far more intolerant . NYC is cool 😃.

Well, if the drivers in the UK are more intolerant than Americans drivers then US drivers must be a shit load better than Aussie drivers! Because in my experience, UK drivers are a lot more tolerant and respectful than ours down under!
Ryan, come back in May for the 5 Boro Bike Tour! 30,000 cyclists on closed boulevards 6 lanes wide. Great views of the city, riders and bikes of all shapes and sizes, and a great finish festival in Staten Island. 47 miles of heaven!

I did that event once, it was awful. Bunch of amateur cyclists.
There are also BLM protest rides on Friday evenings. Although I have mixed feelings about the BLM movement (the cause is righteous, but the organization itself is racist/anti-Semitic/anti-Asian garbage), the feeling of riding around the city in a large pack of people (masked, of course) while being cheered on by supporters is a lot of fun.

I love bike riding in New York City.. It has changed for the better over the years... love the added bike lanes & what they have done along the East River.. Love Central Park.. Hoping to do 5 Boro Bike ride again in May 2020.. I once did a 3 day bike ride from Boston to Penn Station.. That was Super Fun, sleeping in tents on UConn football field.. then in Bridgeport CT.. at Seaside Park.. Keep the great videos coming..

We have a bike lane on one of the major roads in town but if a car needs to cross it to turn into a store's parking lot they often don't yield to bicyclists (this has been my experience). I have had too many near misses (hit once in another state - same scenario) as such I don't ride nearly as much as I would like.
I biked there a couple years ago, mostly with friends but I was by myself part of the time. I'm used to 40+ MPH traffic going past me in the city where I live, so the traffic in NYC felt busy but less speedy. I quickly got used to dodging potholes & cars & biked faster than I normally would. I liked biking there more than walking & taking trains like I had in previous visits - it was such a great way to see the city. I can't wait to come back and ride again! Especially want to bike with Clarence & family!

Actually, the cyclist near-collision @2:33 was caused (in part) by the other cyclist going in the wrong direction. I'm not excusing the truck driver from parking in a bike lane.
Wrong, it’s a two way bike lane on a one way street. The truck was blocking the two way bike lane.

2:35 not allowed to unload in the bike lane or ¨salmon¨ down a one way street the wrong way... this stuff is pretty common in NYC and collisions can happen really quickly!

The numerous bike lanes that have been installed since I started bike commuting in NYC in 1995 have helped make biking in NYC a lot safer than it was when I first started but I still wouldn't ride without a helmet in NYC except maybe on Governor's Island where there are essentially no cars, but thanks again for showing how feasible biking is in this town where I was born and have lived in and around for 48 years!
More biking, more better! Love to see cycling grow, people getting healthier, being closer to each other and nature. What's not to like? In NY to meet the Priority folks? What a great place to ride. I hope the infrastructure bill includes lots of money to make biking easier and safer. We are headed that way and there is no turning around! Saludos y abrazos :-)

I just experienced a fun and wild adventure using the city bikes to go from (40th Street and 9th Ave) to the MOMA. A few car drivers were impatient with me and one told me to go to the side. I was under the impression that I could take up the lane (no bike lane at the time) so long as I kept with traffic flow, signaled, and stayed off the sidewalk (impossible anyways with the density of pedestrians). Pedestrian barriers that separate bicycles made sense around construction areas but can someone clarify where exactly the driver wanted me to go?
I've found NYC to be a great place to ride. Yes it's insanely busy, but no one gets their panties in a bunch because you're riding your bike (ain't nobody got time for that...they just go around you). I've never had a bad experience riding bikes in NYC. Even in Boulder I've had motorists do various not so nice things (usually just yelling or cutting you off).

Very cool you visited NYC! This is my town, and I love riding here. Central Park in particular & the dedicated bicycle lanes are great. The unprotected bike lanes are scary tho. Cabs pull over in front of you, and people step out from behind illegally parked trucks all the time. I much prefer taking my chances weaving in & out of traffic than riding the bike lanes in those areas. But riding in NYC is definitely a blast. Wish i knew you were here, i would have told you the best places to get a burrito! 🌯

Love NYC! visited for the first time last year. Had a really good time and did all the touristy stuff. I wanted to use the citi bikes but my wife was not comfortable riding one in the city. Maybe next time. My city is Omaha and we have a long way to go with biking. There are very few bike lanes and our bike paths don’t hook up and make destinations easier. It’s very disappointing as we are growing, but money doesn’t seem to go to biking. A few years ago the city admins even fired our “bike ambassador”, so that should tell you something about our progress. Our neighbor state, Iowa does much better accommodating bikes. I wish our city leaders would learn from them as Omaha has so much potential. Lastly, I’m most scared of cars hitting me from behind so I turn on my light when I think about it. Also, bright shirts help too.
Wow I've haven't checked out Queens in a while. Key point " if you know what you are doing." Sometimes you can't use the cross walks with out getting hit.

So I would like to cycle in the city even if I am not an tourist but a resident myself. My goal is to draw common and uncommon landmarks here in nyc. I wish I knew something about parking my bike and investing the right gear. But I like to be stationed and getting my lunch without having the ability to constantly looking out for my bike. Having the ability to get to the place either on foot or by cycling I would like to take part of. That I wish to accomplish this year.

A few weeks ago, I'm riding NYC (1st Ave northbound), and see a trash truck ahead in the bike lane. I slow, about half a block away, making the assumption that he's going to pull out after picking up some bags. The truck actually backs up after that. So I come to a complete stop, with what I thought was plenty of room between me and the truck. The guy on the back of the truck (roughly the size of a refrigerator) stepped off the truck and took two backward steps right into my stationary bike. The language he used was apropos of what you might think a NYC sanitation hauler might use. I started to argue that he was in the bike lane, and that I was at a complete standstill. When the driver got out to start in on the conversation, I knew it was more important to be alive than right. I made my apologies and moved on to a great day of riding.
Yikes!! That’s a scary situation. People driving and parking in nyc bike lanes is a big problem
