March Cut Flower Garden Check-List in Zone 5B/6A...Getting On Track! And Have My Ranunculus Failed!?

- Garden Gals and Guys, in today's video I bring you my organized check-list for the cut flower garden for the rest of March. The past two weeks have been a bit chaotic with my twin pregnancy and a sprained ankle, but today I've decided to organize and prioritize what I want to get done to stay on track for the cut flower season here in Zone 5b/6a! Sometimes in the midst of life events we just have to take a breath, re-vamp, organize, and get after it, right? Here's my attempt to do that today and I hope it may help you as well.
Also, I give you a brief update on my anemones and ranunculus I've started this year...have I failed? Time will tell, but at least I've got one very small tray worth. I have to remember...give myself grace! Remember it for yourselves as well!

I'm happy to hear that your ankle is better and that your twins are doing well. Yes, health is the number 1 priority, but I'm glad that you are still gardening. Gardening should bring us joy, but sometimes it is challenging. This year, I am having great success with my anemones and ranunculus. I started them late January and early February. I kept the water moving and they sprouted quickly in my cool and dark basement. Temperature and moisture work together. They were individually potted into a 36 or 50 cell tray and grown under lights in the basement. I started planting them outside into the soil putting down Espoma Land and Sea compost on Monday. I have probably 100 plus of each planted so far. Actually, I went big and grew 370 ranunculus and 320 anemones. I grow some for my sister's garden also. Also as a follow-up, I did soak the Romance ranunculus for the 12 hours and the Butterfly ranunculus for the 24 hours as suggested by Fleur Farm in Vermont and had great results. I think growing them under lights really pushes them along because I found buds on the anemones at planting time which was crazy. I have a patch of 25 anemones planted in 2023 growing strong and found a bud. I also have a few random ranunculus from 2023 popping up that have survived really cold temperatures. I wonder if they survive the winter that they are stronger? Regarding snapdragons, yes, they are a challenge this year. Last year, it was so easy and I had too many almost---632 because I was overseeding to use old seed and it germinated. I am starting a second batch this year by using 3 by 3 squares and germination is better. I just need to move them out. A couple weeks ago, I bumped up my lisianthus and it was a big job because I have around 300. They are now big enough that they should survive. I hope to plant them outside in April because they like to be planted in cool soil. My pansies, violas and stocks will want to be outside soon also. Stay well and happy gardening!

We received an inch of rain today and every plant outside looks happy. I did my first 2024 pot yesterday and it looks great. I put 15 Ranunculus Amadine Coral in a large pot. Next week will be cold so more covering will be needed. Also, had to tell you about my Mahogany Splendor hibiscus! I bought one plant last year and before frost I cut a large vase of stems. It lasted and lasted and I noticed a big root sprout on one stem. So, I potted it up and it has 3 buds but the newest foliage is more green. It is just by a window and not under lights. I love gardening surprises!
I was glad it rained as well! The Amadine Coral is going to be beautiful! That’s incredible that your mahogany splendor hibiscus is still thriving! How exciting…garden surprises are the best!

So happy you and the babies are doing well. I planted maverick geraniums and some painted daisies this year. They germinated and were growing well so I potted them up--then they just stopped growing and starting going downhill. I unpotted a few and the roots were tiny. I didn't notice any bugs but I have transplanted them in new soil and hoping they snap out of it-but I am listening to you and giving myself grace.
We have to right!? Otherwise, we'd go insane and it's not worth it! I hope they bounce back for you though! Potting my Lisianthus up today as well.

I think you could still plant out the anenomes and ranunculus on time even if they only have little roots and even though not as big as last year, because they'll do better in the ground than in trays that tend to dry out.

I'm in z 6 in the cold part of WA (near N Idaho) and have a bunch of seedlings going. I'm just hoping to get some garden clean up done this weekend because we're getting some sunshine! And then plant some 6-8 week flower seeds after that. Excited for spring blooms!
Exciting times! 👏 Glad to hear you’re planting soon. That’s wonderful. Yeah, I may just go ahead and plant them. Some corms look pretty shriveled, but it doesn’t hurt to throw ‘em in there. We’ll see what happens!

Things have been going pretty well for me! I had 100% germ on my Floret dahlia seeds. This month I’m starting tomatoes, celosia, and some basil. Been behind on starting to water once a week with fish fertilizer, but I have worm castings and a little biotone starter fertilizer in my seed starting mix so they’re doing okay! Also direct sowing bread seed poppies and sweet peas outside!

I have had nothing but trouble presprouting ranuncs and anenomes. The anenomes were a bust this year for me. Ranuncs went better they are out in an elevated bed . I have been hardening off my cool season annuals. It has been nuts with weather here too. In the 70s now.
This weather is bonkers. It’s so difficult to keep things at an appropriate temperature! Glad your ranunculus are out and that they made it. Exciting you’re hardening off things now. Planting go time is going to be here before we know it!
I keep my presprouting trays covered loosely with foil to keep it dark and keep the moisture in until sprouts pop up, then I give them light. Best of luck!!

Happy to hear you and the babies are doing well, and that you are giving yourself grace. I am newly 6a, a few hours south of you and I am running behind as well... have snaps and stock that need potted up badly, have not started my sweetpeas, petunia yet... but this is the week to catch up, or not... it will be what it is and we will enjoy what we get. I almost killed my bachelor button sprouts, hoping a good watering overnight helps.

I got a sudden health issue, both my hands feeling effects of severe carpal tunnel flare ups, so I've had to tone down my plans a lot. :( No clue what will finally end up being put out, I'm hoping for the best, with some family helping out maybe, or I'm screwed. :( Good luck with the ankle and pregnancy tiredness, hoping for good health for both of us!

My potomac royal and costa lavender from Johnny's had great germination, but the madame butterfly bronze was terrible with maybe 1/3 germinating. I decided to experiment with the rest of the madame seeds and threw a bunch into a milk jug a few days ago to see if they are happier outside. I'm maybe an hour west of you and was also surprised to see some ranunculus survived the winter. I forgot a few dahlias in the ground as well and decided to pull them up to see if they survived, and surprisingly they did! It was a weirdly mild winter for us for sure.
No kidding it was - the weather has been so bizarre and inconsistent. So far I have no germination on my madame series…hoping that changes, but not holding my breath. I haven’t checked on my dahlias yet that are in storage, but one I pulled out of the raised bed a few weeks ago was just fine!

And yea - I started Snaps from Johnnys. Fine germination but gosh they don't look good but I think that's me putting them under a 'wrong' light
All of my snaps are from Johnny’s, multiple types, and I haven’t had an issue with them germinating or growing. Maybe I lucked out? I’m so glad your anemone’s came up for you! I plan on leaving mine (and the ranunculus) in their raised bed and putting zinnia in there when they fade, maybe just maybe they’ll make it! Here the issue is sogginess rather than cold (PNW), but I’ve had good luck covering their raised bed this year, so I bet that could work in the fall and winter. Have you or anyone else in here planted something like zinnia straight up in the same bed and if so did it work out?
I have planted mahogany splendor hibiscus and it did very well! I think Zinnias would be a solid choice too. Even Cosmos! Definitely worth it to get more bang for your buck out of that bed. Hoping my snaps pull through!

Ugh, Geoseed saga continues. Called last week and they said my order had been cancelled. Worked through that and was told it would ship last Friday. Called today, they said it was cancelled. So, so, so very upset! Anyway, now they shipped priority mail today and I should have by Friday. God willing. My lissies are in there and they're pelleted...I'm at a loss. Perhaps start them and have a fall crop? The ones I planted on 1/7 are stunted and haven't gotten any bigger than teeny tiny. 😢 Hope you have a great night!!
Aw, thank you, Cherie! Starting to slow down, but taking it a day at a time. I’m so sorry to hear about your Geoseeds mishap…that’s beyond frustrating! 😤 I’d definitely start them asap when you get them. They’ll be a bit behind, but I think you’d have something for fall! With them being pelleted, I believe you need to use them this season. Have you tried potting the small ones up? That may help! Pulling for you! Keep your head up!
@@TinysGarden yep, pelleted, have to use this year. Or perhaps I'll just get less germination next year. My stunted ones are 2 year old pelleted ones, so might be the problem. I could try and pot up, but they are literally the same size they were a month ago. Like seriously the size of a little mouse poop. 🤣 Ahh well, I'll keep you posted. Take care!!
I am in northcentral Indiana and not that far from you. If you need it, I can give you a days labor in your garden if you need it. It would be like your grandfather or great grandfather coming over to give a hand gardening. Sing out if you need that, maybe later as the season progresses. Stay well and remain positive.

Started presprouting 140 ranunculus beginning of Feb, thinking I had the perfect moisture level in the soil I left them in a basement room. 2 weeks later more than half rotted and none were sprouting. Determined not to lose them I scoured the net and learned some people had problems sprouting their corms in rooms with a window. I all I replanted them this time in the closet with 0 light. A few days later most began sprouting. Today I have 40 with leaves and 100 in the garbage! This is only my second time trying ranunculus, the first time 2 years ago I had 1 of 12 make it. Those were bad odds but I didn't give up. Glad to see you not giving up either! Rooting for you!

Can someone tell me when I can move my seedlings from indoor growing to my unheated greenhouse? I have seedlings of Bells of Ireland, snaps, scabiosa, echinacea, paper and English daisies, lavender, lisianthus, begonia… artichoke.. I know Im missing some.. but i need room under my lights for more seeds!
I have started several varieties of cut flowers using the winter sowing method. I plant to start my Floret Dahlia seeds in the next few weeks. Holding off on my veggies and zinnias until April.
That’s tricky…as long as you watch your weather closely you could probably take most of them out now. If it’s a 70 degree day, I’d move them out of the greenhouse or if it’s too cold 27 ish or below I’d turn on a little heater. I hope you figure out a solution!
