I had the loneliness stage during my internship as an electrical engineer intern but.. that was the best things that ever happen to my life, no one came and disturb me during my work besides my sv and co sv. I found out that i enjoy just being myself and focusing on my work.
Tomorrow is my first day as site electrical engineer protege, im planning to wear pink outfit :D I hope that i am able to handle work just like men does. Wish me luck! :'D

I experienced this so badly at my last job. The engineers wouldn’t listen to anything I said and almost tanked projects because of it. I had to relay every technical idea through a man. When I complained about it, I was told by HR that the company doesn’t discriminate against women but discriminates against people with low IQs. I don’t have a low IQ and they never measured it. They’d consistently have women’s meetings every few weeks about why they couldn’t retain any women. When we discussed biases, it was to a group of women “well, men might have their biases, but what about you? Women do too!”. Worst place ever. So much happier since I left and I hope I never have to go through that again.

The fact that you had to prove this with actual studies is seriously the only thing you need to prove the point, because if the roles were reveresed, a male saying the same story without facts.... he'd immediately be believed.

I’m so glad I found your channel. I am an electrical engineering student currently fighting sexism at my school. I’ve been making repeated complaints about the same Professor since 2020, and nothing has changed. I finally tracked down the other women in my major (there are only five of us because of the size of my school, and I don’t really know them). Turns out, they also have had issues with the same Professor, but have been afraid to speak up because they’ve been alone in his classes. I’ve gotten a couple more people to make complaints now, and things are starting to change 😏

This video is excellent, thank you! I am an electronic engineer and I have a PhD in physics and, in particular during my engineering studies, I have lived all of this. It is hard not to be hurt or not to start second-guessing yourself because of this environment. I think every young student should watch this video, to learn or remind themselves that women are perfectly capable of studying science, engineering and so on. All the rest is just baseless blah blah and, basically, chauvinism.

Hey Kat!! I too am an EE in CA! I am a Latino male. You're a great example for the latino community!
I too, have had that weird situation where dudes say they're saving a seat but don't really seem too.
You're a female representation for EE's! It's crazy that so few women are in engineering. Can you tell us all or make a video on how you applied to become an EE as a woman? Bc there's such low enrollment, obviously the system is discriminating women to become ee's or other engineers. Probably bc it's the highest paying major ore one of them.
Oh wait, there's no application to be enrolled as a woman... Maybe women simply don't like the idea of EE... Maybe there's a reason there's correlation that the highest female enrollment is in bioengineering, if you're smart you can tell women generally/naturally choose medical/ nursing fields over time so much bc it's rather natural, it's social and caring, whereas EE is introverted in school and not as social, unless you find study groups, but even finding study buddies was hard for me, as a guy, can you believe that?! Your anger starting off this video when reading stats about EE enrollment says so much. Actually women have such an advantage in engineering, especially in school. You probably could tell yourself, women in such a male dominated area receive more attention from males, it's not rocket science. In the workplace, some guys get all giddied up and relieved that women are there, especially if they're attractive. You probably get some of this attention, or some guys are intimidated by your looks, you probably consider them to be stand-off-ish/cold, little do you know it's bc you're an attractive female. Nothing scares a guy more than talking to a female they're attracted to. Confident guys are the opposite, all of a sudden they become a super friendly, super awesome nice guy. Some guys who are super nice, wouldn't be so if you were a guy or obese. You benefit here. As for me, I'm not stupid nor desparate enough to have pursue anything but a professional co ed relationships. You have no clue as to the benefits of being an attractive female in EE. Sure you have some hurdles. But your benefits being a female outweighs hurdles. Guys are competetive, sure we talk about sports, but still are competetive and view each other as threats for promotion. Guys that get along stick together and form teams/small clicks. You can easily fit in here. literally reasearch the local sports teams and ask the louder guys their favorite teams. Boom you're in. The awkward gamer guys that appear stand off ish, well it's hard for most to get along with them unless you share some video game interests.
You're not discriminated against. Problems are petty. If you were a true female Latina representative, you would be yourself rather than try to be different. You could set an authentic example, no one's forcing you to change. Oh my gosh how will you succeed?! It's simple in case you haven't figured it out. Simply be nice, make effort to be part of the team, and complete assigned tasks.
Your inner resentment towards males, your bias and discrimination towards males, your generalizations, are hypocritical. I'm truly scared to work with someone like you. Guys are awkward and can't simply just open up and be friendly to females. That doesn't mean they're rude or think you're inferior bc of your gender. I would be so discouraged to hire women with these mind sets. I have a sister who's also in a male dominated tech field. She doesn't cry wolf though. Petty problems.

i feel sorry for the inherit inequality we have in this system. some of the comments women get from teachers and colleagues are horrendous.
I'm a guy so its not my place to talk,
but i love engineering, and i can't imagine being forced to go through all that just so I can practice.
the only good thing to say is that, while most places suck, there's bound to be a small number of places and are the way they should me. Treating women equally, with respect.
I mean, you're an engineer for pete's sake, you've done an geat feat all while facing complete bastards.
this is what gives me hope, the existance of kind empathetic people, seeing the progress that women made by demanding equal treatment. "demand" really is the right word, you can't go around politely asking for the respect of sexist pricks, their opinion doesn't change regardless, because they dont operate based on logic or proof, they only think in terms of preconceived notions. And that's exactly why you don't need to prove anything to them.
I apreciate and respect women in this field,
for all it's worth you'll always have my support.

As a,(male) EE that worked in the field for over 20 years I am a little surprised by your comments. I worked with a few female engineers in my career, including several that were promoted to lead departments, and cannot remember ever seeing what you are describing. However, in general, most engineers would probably score very low in emotional EQ or empathy and very high on the autism spectrum. Meaning, you will find many with Aspergers. Engineers mercilessly JUDGE each other by their knowledge and experience in the field and will be condescending to new engineers regardless of gender, which they will usually ignore. Many engineers sadly don't care if they offend each other by doing this. Only your accomplishments l make other Engineers respect you. The most respected people in my department were not attractive, well spoken, or well dressed. They were 50y old, gray, and wore pocket protectors. But they were the sages that the managers would treat with reverence for the projects they had done and the knowledge they possessed. Anyone who wants to be a successful engineer needs to understand this or they will be very unhappy.

    • @KatVoltage
      @KatVoltage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

All I needed to hear from you was “male” and “cannot remember ever seeing”.
I actually held a session at NASA where I invited everyone to share stories of racism, sexism, sexual harassment etc, and many women (almost all) shared horrible stories while the men commented they had “never seen it”, “never experienced it”, or “never noticed”.
My advice to you would be to listen to those telling you when something isn’t right. If you aren’t willing to help us make a change, the best thing you can do is to at least step aside.

There’s a really easy experiment you can try if you’re interested. If you ask a female coworker “has there been a time where you think you’ve been treated differently here just because you’re a woman?” I can almost guarantee there will be responses. And this stuff runs deep!! Even if it’s not as blatant, it’s shown in sooo many other ways that honestly sucks. Being given less difficult projects, not getting praised while others who do the same/less work do, being told you’re a diversity hire, being sexualized, people not believing you did your work, you not being the first person people look to in a room (even though you’re the lead), getting talked to like a baby/child, SALARY, having to do twice or triple the work to get same recognition, adapting to make men feel like your ideas are their ideas so things actually get done (or else they’ll hyper criticize, which surprise surprise, they don’t do to make engineers)
It’s 2024 and I can go on and on😭 i thought it was all gone but it’s very present and real and fucking sad.
It’s a red flag if a company nowadays has a low female to male ratio in engineering bc a lot of women are in stem. If they’re not there, then the ones that were uncomfortable and left. But if your company has a lot of women, who get promotions, and who stay!! It’s probably good (enough) :) (but if you ask, I guarantee there will be responses)
