Wow, another super episode - many thanks! Got a real kick out of Tom’s comment at 3:31, “Sort of like Jay Leno’s Garage ...”. Those Bonneville’s are such beautiful fish!
In the course of conversation topic of losing fish came up.....old man I knew struck rod DOWN sharply to set hook when fishing soft tip rods....he said when you push rod sharply down the tip actually goes UP ......so when you jerk rod sharply up at time of strike the tip actually goes down and does not set hook properly...... think about it..... he used to do this alot when he was getting what he called "light bites"
Reminds me of the time in the 80's when I hired a realtor in Bozeman, Montana and I met her at her home and walked into the living room to come face to face with Bud Lilly. What a wonderful, kind and generous man.
Got inspired by your vid and bought my first tenkara rod (a mini). I used to fly but now mostly salties since I live in VA beach. I'll use it to play with panfish in the area. I appreciate you pointing the catch in the vid, hard to see. 👍👍😱
Its such an unavoidable reaction to tell somebody to set the hook. I sometimes catch myself doing it to the fella who taught me how to fly fish. He never says a word, just stands back and watches me farm 2 or 3 hook sets in a row. Good times lol. Love your content.
Great video. I'm also a big fan if Teton Tenkara. Kind of an off the wall question but what type of waders were you wearing in the video? Also I really like your backpack. What type of backpack do you use? Does it come with those front pouches? Thanks.
The waders are great. Here's the link (and they're also on Amazon): www.iwaderfishing.com/products/s1-chest-waders?variant=32095470125191 I made the backpack myself, including the front pouches.
I always enjoy your videos. I appreciate that you show a close up of your flies. I know you list your equipment, but it would be nice to know if you are using them dry or wet, of if you used floatant on your fly or line. You are so successful, I could gleen a better experience. I've done my share of fly fishing, but I'm new to Tenkara and I love it!
Eye-opening video - I don't fish streams that big either, but if I did, my first inclination would be to break out the "traditional" fly gear and dredge the bottom with nymphs; I wouldn't think about Tenkara - this video proves my inclination would be wrong.
Question: how can you fish through winter? Dont you have certain seasons when fishing is allowed and also some where fishing is not allowed? Like we habe in europe certain protected spawning season during fall and winter were we are not allowed to fish in order to protect the spawning fish and give them a resting periode?!
It depends on the state. Some states have fishing seasons and some don't. In this particular state (Idaho), you can fish year-round. Some of the native (cutthroat) trout streams are temporarily closed during spawning, which is in early summer.
Does anyone know of someone making Tenkara rod "burritos" similar to the one Tom Davis's wife made for him? I think it's a great idea and would love to utilize one of these but have not seen them offered commercially nor do I have the means to make one myself. Any info would be helpful, thank you!
An important aspect of Tenkara for me is simplicity. Having many rods just adds complications. My suggestion is to pick a rod you like and use that one. Concentrate on fly presentation, not equipment selection. But that is just my point of view.

I had a great time fishing with you, Tristan! We definitely need to do it again! Cheers!

Lol yeah, that was great. Thanks for watching, Michael!
Yes, Teton Tenkara!! Love his channel too. Thanks for cool collaboration:)
Excellent as always! Enjoyed every minute! Tom from Teton truly is a legend! Tight lines Tristan & Tom, Steve at Black Fly
They’re dark because of the dark river bed and clear water. Adaptive camouflage.👍😁 Well done!
My two favorite Tenkara channels 🙌 Looks fun
I really enjoy both of your channels.
Thanks John!
Nice video! Always interesting to listen to others, watching what you guys do.
Great to see you and Tom out on the stream. I recently have purchased yarn from you to tie up many of the flies in Tom's ebook I bought!?
Nice! I haven't bought Tom's ebook yet but will be doing so soon. Thanks Jon.
Idaho has done so well with its stream fisheries over the years. Those of us from WA state are jealous. Such beautiful country in ID.

Wonderful experience. Awesome guest. I’m waiting for some new rods that are on back order. Can’t wait to hit the water in my area. Big thanks!
By your fishing cross stream, it was possible to see the line well enough to see the take by several fish. That was great.
Can you talk about your chest packs and backpacks you use? Thanks
Had a feeling it would be Tom. How awesome.
My home waters! Very nice.
Oh man, i won't lie, i'm kindda envious! 😂😍
Great great vid!
Thanks Carlos!

Lol I know, it's just something ingrained in most of us. Thanks for watching, Justin!
Awesome video thank you
Nice work Gentlemen
Fun video. In that river were yip out able to see your fly and the take or did you have some other kind of indicator?
I bought one of Tom's Oni rods last fall. It's one of my go-tos now.
Nice. I've never used one of those rods, but they're supposed to be excellent.
@@TenkaraAddict i've got an oni 1 and 3 now and love the feel of both

I made the backpack myself, including the front pouches.
Love the big water fishing!
I'm a small creek guy myself, but it's fun to fish bigger water as long as I can still catch a lot of fish!

I've never once used floatant. I fish all of my flies wet. Thanks for watching!
How do you detect strikes you don’t see? Is it by feel or seeing the line tighten or sometimes either?
That would be a fantastic time to fish with both of you! Great video as always!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Excellent thank you!
Nice! Looked like a fun river to fish.
Nice Do you use a polaroid lens on your recording device? I assume it's a GoPro
I assume you mean polarized, not polaroid. I usually do, yes, but none of them for the GoPro seem to make much of a difference.
Great videos. Is you fly submerged during the drift And if so how far
I wonder how "braided line" around 8 to 20lb would work as the primary line ??
Awesome man!
What holds your landing net at precise location to grab when landing , I love the set up !
He explains on his blog I believe, link in description
You were 15 min from my home here!!
where at in idaho? i got my son a tenkara rod for christmas and he lives in meridian idaho.
What length of line were you using and how much was in the water!?
You are soooo lucky Such sumptuous water. :-)
Do you recommend any of the tentara usa rods?

Tenkara Addict great info thanks

Haha that’s a great spot! I love fishing there too!
That river was a bit different from your usual streams.
Fall River?
Why do you fish barbless?
An important aspect of Tenkara for me is simplicity. Having many rods just adds complications. My suggestion is to pick a rod you like and use that one. Concentrate on fly presentation, not equipment selection. But that is just my point of view.
You are certainly free to feel that way! Thanks for watching.
After getting to the river and finding I had a broken rod tip, I always carry a spare.
How much is the fly fishing license if got a Tenkara rod in uk
No idea
do each of you have some favorite waders?
Seems like " whipping " would be a better word vs. casting
Great video, but I miss your "fish on"!😄
Lol I'll try to do it more! Thanks Willi.
I don't feel so bad when I see the pros missing hits.
👍
I hope you paid close attention to how he finds fish...... yup.....he knows what he's doin
👍👍
👍👍👍😍😍😍👏👏👏
