- Due to plot reasons, Mio undergoes rapid hair growth and as a person who's used to having shorter hair styles, she struggles with it and is unsure what to do. I won't go into the reasons why this happened as that's spoilery, so I'll leave it at, this is a cute cutscene in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 that was really fun to see.
In the next scene her hair is back to the usual short length, by the way. So she goes forward with it

Honestly, I don‘t care about the hair at this point. All I care about is that after all that happened, this was some much needed humor.

There was a perfectly timed comedic moment before, during her flute exchange with Noah she says "I know, it's icky...", and that was just the funniest thing
Something I haven’t seen people talk about with this scene is how happy and free Mio looks here. She’s been a mostly melancholic character throughout the story up to this point because of her dwindling days left to live. But now having been freed from those shackles and knowing she has a future to fight for, she appears more alive than ever before. Even the simple act of complaining about her hair fills her with immense joy. It’s a wonderful bit of wholesome character growth.
She is probably happier here because she doesn’t have to worry about how long she has to live anymore

I think it's hilarious that Mio is willing to completely undo a symbol of someone who sacrificed themselves for her just because it's also a minor inconvenience.

I just got to this part after that roller coaster and I am so glad the let us pick as I like long hair characters despite the clipping issues that comes from it.
Definitely! I'm glad we can choose. For me I like short hair more, not because I have a preference, long hair Mio is so beautiful, but because the short hair one is my Mio, and the other is M and I want to differentiate them.

As a long-haired girl myself I relate to this pain on a personal level
I see having long hair as like having a child, it is very annoying, it goes everywhere except for where you want it too, it bothers you no matter what your doing, and it is a nightmare to try and clean up after but damnit you made this choice and you are sticking with it

What I like about this scene is how frank Mio is about it. Whenever characters in a JRPG change their appearance in some way, they usually whip some kind of outside influence or philosophical reason for it.
But Mio, she just finds that hair length annoying. So refreshing to hear something like that.

Long-haired Mio is lovely during cutscenes. During gameplay though it just meshes _distractingly_ bad with everything.
I personally prefer long hair appearance wise, but after discussion with friends I think short hair just fits Mio's personality better

The best part of this scene that I think a lot of people are glossing over, is when Eunie says "why not just ask Noah about it?" and Mio replies "this has nothing to do with him!" YES GIRL, TELL IT LIKE IT IS!
I mean, to be fair, Noah does have long hair too. At the very least he should have somr advice to take care of it

I feel like this is kind of a response to the XB2 'will you call her Pyra or Mythra' question that was handed to Rex.
Obviously both are ultimately the player making the choice, but this comes off much more organically and emphasizes that Mio and Noah are their own people.

As a guy, my own preference was long. But then I ended up with early onset MPB. Bald spot *AND* receding hairline. I looked like a Monk by age 25! Now I just buzz everything to 1/8th's inch and wear unrealistic Anime wigs out of spite.

@@choboy46 You can figure out pretty early on that something is off about the species in this world. The Blades are neither immortal, nor tied to drivers. The Machina are a lot more humanoid, and similarly have lost their extreme longevity. Same goes for the High Entia.

There's also the problem of long hair getting in the way during a fight. If you don't cut or tie it, the hair can block your vision. There was a fight scene in the DC movie "Birds of Prey" where Black Canary was taking down Black Mask's grunts alongside Harley Quinn and others. She had to borrow a hair tie mid fight.
In high-intensity sports, you will hardly ever see long-haired people playing with loose long hair. However, during the last U-20 football World Cup, I got to see a woman playing like that in football for the first time ever, she was a Spaniard, IIRC.

I do wonder who'd pick the short option? In XC2, you get to play with both Pyra and Mythra for a several chapters before they make you choose which name you want, and that's not an aesthetic change. Here, assuming you follow the story without sidequests, there's maybe an hour or less between getting the long hair and making this choice. Wanna go back to the short hair from the previous 50 hours? Or keep this long hair that you just got?
