Thank you for a great video of an amazing city. I spent four months in Chiang Mai and the surrounding area. Simply amazing. Wat Chedi Luang…the ruined broken part is the Stupa. Partially collapsed from an earthquake in the 1600’s. The temple itself is a separate building right there in the same complex.
Went up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep three times. Taking the SongThaews. Wat Phra That is the name of the temple complex. Doi Suthep is the name of the mountain it is on, just to the west of Chiang Mai. But many people simply call the temple complex “Doi Suthep” after the mountain. You drive right past Chiang Mai Zoo on your way there. No…you don’t have to climb the long stairway. There is also an incline tramway that can take people to the top who might find the stairs to be too much.
Chiang Mai is one of my favourite cities. I really miss it. I miss Bangkok also, and Siem Reap, Cambodia, (with the Angkor Wat Archeological Park). Soon to fly out of Canada again and return to Thailand and Cambodia. Be sure to see the Night Market and the Sunday Walking Street Market. 🙏🏼 ☸️ 🛺🌴.
Oh….just to let you know….they say that if you go to Chiang Mai, but you don’t go to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep up on the mountain…..then you’ve never really been to Chiang Mai. There are about 300 temples in Chiang Mai and the surrounding area. I ended up becoming Theravada Buddhist. The basic teachings (not the added on animism) simply make much more common sense to me than Christianity.
People going to Thailand or Cambodia or anywhere in that region should study proper respectful behaviour and proper dress for going to temples. Very important. If you go to the temples and you have no clue of how to behave and what to do, you may end up very embarrassed and apologizing a lot. There is a lot of information online. Even on TH-cam. Like doing a bit of study before an exam. It won’t take you long to learn the basics. Some things to learn before going to Thailand… like if you drop Thai money and it starts to blow away in a breeze…do NOT step on it to save it. Thai people see that as very disrespectful…because it has a picture of a member of the royal family on it. And never sit with your feet pointed to a statue of Buddha or a monk. We in the west tend to be ignorant of the customs and ways of life of other countries. Remember when you travel….you’re not in the U.S. or Canada or Europe anymore.
