- In this video, I'm going to show you how to make water changes easy. Water changes are a necessary evil in fish keeping. Buckets are the worst, and full water change pumps/systems can get expensive. This $5 water change hack will change the way you do water changes! JJ Gills on Facebook:

Glad this video has helped so many people!
If you get an adapter that fits on the hose itself and the clear vinyl tubing that attaches to a siphon you can complete that system and make it exactly like the python this way you can vacuum your gravel and everything if you have gravel and not sand
I like to run a long tube either outside or to a drain. I have so many pumps to spare that I just use that to pump the water out and when all the water I want to take out is out. I just simply put the pump from the tank to my water reserve bins that have Water ready to fill the tank back up. Been there with the buckets I think we all have but instead of moving buckets I now just move a pump and tubing.
Oh my gosh!!!! You just made my life so much easier! Thank you so much for making this video!
Pro tip: Buy a small cheap powerhead (100-200gph) and attach it to the tank side of the hose for draining, it will speed things up considerably! Once you've removed enough water just unplug the power head and reverse the flow, don't even need to detatch it. I use this method with standard python and can do 50% water change on my 60 breeder in about 25 mins.
I leave mine attached to my basement laundry sink. Turn the water on, bring the tube upstairs, take it back down when I'm done. Easy and no mess.
Came across this and cracked up laughing. Love it ... made my day seeing someone who simply usd common sense. Priceless ... absolutely priceless. Just hope the garden hose doesn't leach some unknown chemical as they don't tend to be good grade but here is such a hose. shopping around, researching, been 27 years since I had a tank. Thinking a 90, five discus , Cardinals, 2-4 rams. No hurry and researching ... as you did, love it, ha, ha, oh crap ... Thanks for sharing.
Discus and rams aren't easy fish. Good luck!
@@JJGills Had discus 27 years ago. They got huge, survived a five day power outage with no backup power. Rams, didn't used to be the problem they are now and it's due to hormone treated water. For rams it's best to find a local breeder. Had a 120 gallon with 4 discus, cardinals and blue ra!s. Only had one fish ever die, a pleco and never ended a water test kit, freaked out the fish store guy when he saw the size of the discus he sold !e !months later.
@@mikefinley4367 I have super hard well water now so I'm doing mostly African cichlids and shrimp but I'm hoping a friend gives me rams soon
@@JJGills Research getting a whole house water softener & filtration system. At least for the fish, it doesn't have to be a huge system and they are not that difficult to install with a little research. At least get a filtration for your own drinking, it can cause kidney stones but if your a beer and coffee drinker you'll be ok.
I bought the python pump and brass adapter for $ 11.00 from Amazon and a few pvc adapters and a small piece of pvc and heated and bent it to make a hook to refill my tanks for around $30.00
sounds like a good build!
OMG I made that same system about 5 years ago when I got my 55 gallon tank and now I've got a 125 a 55 and a 36bow front
Thanks for the video! Looking to get one of these. Absolutely love your Oscar! I know this was posted about a year ago so I bet he is huge now!
You have my loyalty. Had to find solutions quick with a hand/wrist injury and I really didn't want to dive on the whole kit, especially because I have to replace a utility sink just to use this method. Combining this idea with one from the Aquarium Co-op, a DIY "Python hook" that attaches to the other end of the hose, will likely be how I do things from now on.
I'm glad you mention that people only need to initiate the siphon, many people just waste water and keep the faucet running.
Cheers!
Now, back to trying to pick a hose...lol. Keep wanting to go with a 3/4" 50' Flexzilla, but I know how hoses...typically fail. Lol
Flexzilla is pretty durable
Im using buckets now, but have been looking around for something else. The one thing about the python system is that you ideally want one for each aquarium to avoid crosscontamination since the same hose is used both for syphoning and refilling. Or atleast keep using buckets for waterchanges in the quaranteentank to be sure.
You can simply run really hot water through the hose to your sink or shower after each uses. Unless there is something else to be worried about I am missing.
@@oliviervieira7174 I genuinly dont know if thats enough to kill all diseases, I would use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar on tools but thats not easy with a hose 😁. I just generally try to keep seperate tools for different aquariums (within reason). I would have no issue using the same hose to fill different tanks, its just that since you also syphon out using the same hose there is plenty of opportunity for stuff to be transfered over.
I definitly wouldnt use it for quarantene tanks, or tanks with annoying algea etc!
@@Myndi78 I shouldn't have used the term simply! To my knowledge boiling water would be enough to kill all pathogens but I can't see anyone using boiling water every time. I bet the hottest water coming from your sink would be enough to kill all common aquarium pathogens, but of course it's only a bet. If you are serious about safe and using the hose, I would look into blocking one end and filling the hose with some solution and storing it as is for some time.
@@oliviervieira7174 I havent bought a python system yet, but I think I will soon! I only have 3 tanks running and two of them are below 30gallon so I might just use a python only for the big tank, since thats the one that breaks my back when its time for waterchange 😂
@@Myndi78 I can't imaging using buckets for anything but water top offs, I would've otherwise given up already! If you're interested in a DIY python aquarium coop has a video titled ''Make Water Changes EASY with THIS'' also depending on your setup and mostly your water source using plants like pothos suck up an enormous amount of nitrates, effectively getting rid of water changes. I try to make it so I only have to do water changes every couple months, using RO water, my own mineral mixes and plants.
I feed my fish after cleaning too! LOL I guess I'm encouraging emotional eating X) Thanks for the tip looking forward to a easier cleaning soon!
I like to use a power head and 1/2 inch tube to drain and fill the water.
what kind of garden hose did you use instead of the clear hose that comes with it?? what is the size of the connection? could you link it if possible?
Thank you my brother!!!. Going to the store as we speak 😂😂
I have the hook and shut off valve coming cant wait to use that
Consider trimming the outlet end of the J Hook, so as the water approaches the Top level the Hook is still above the Surface.
I invested in a water pump it’s a game changer
New sub just off this video. Just got a 75 and needed something for when we fill it up and eventually change water. You are a genius 🙌
Welcome to the community! 🐠
Was the part still $5??? Shipping cost?
New subscriber here! Great info! I've been using the Python system pieces for years as they are absolutely necessary in my fish room too 😉
Wish I’d have seen this before I spent $40 on my water change system lol but it’s still worth $40 to never have to carry buckets again or fill the tank with a pitcher… I got TONS of plants when I set up my 55 long so they can do most of the work for me & they truly are!! But in the beginning you have to water change weekly until those plants get over their shock & you dial in your fertilization/light etc. I didn’t realize it (because test strips SUCK!!) but my plants were starving because I had so many of them even though I had 20+ small fish that I feed every day… so I got the master test kit & it showed zero nitrates when the test strips kept reading 100 nitrates… lying jerks! 😩 but thankfully I caught it in time & I added 20 ml of fertilizers, iron, growth hormone + added root tabs in the substrate & got nerite snails to keep on top of any algae growth that might become an issue ❤🪴🐟🐠🦐🐌🥰🤞🙏
You are the best….even a year later saving lives!! Thank You!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is awesome! Thanks for the video!
Damn...I never thought of that..thx for the video, just ordered mine..no more buckets for me...
How is it I might buy this then just get my hose and set it up.
I have the exact same bell value color and all
Thanks bro! Worked like a charm.
😲 that’s freaking awesome I feel like fool paying for the whole thing.
Thank you for talking about my sweet prince Tony Chase. He don’t do drugs. That dude got gingivitis

Also the pic of him in the background, with a full set of teeth is just the icing in the cake
Great video. You need to have a video on how you trained the Oscar to eat all your swordtails and mollies! My old Oscar eat everything that can fit in his mouth!
Ha! He did when he got a little bigger. I was cycling a tank just for him when this video came out.

Problem is a lot of the newer faucets do not have the threaded end.... That's my challenge....
True. But it's a $2 piece at the hardware store that's not super hard to replace. that's what I did. maybe I should do a vid on how to do that part

Wow nice job on your tank set up can you make a video on the two tanks you have there. Also I love those fish just looking at them makes me feel relaxed.
I have a series coming soon where I move the fish room across country. tearing down and rebuilding everything. Stay tuned!
Great just what i needed i didnt want to spend $50 lol i appreciate this new sub and like awesome
Measure the temp of your tank and the temp of your tap to make sure it's same/close.
Yep! Treated with dechlorinator as well.
@@JJGills When do you dechlor? I've read before you put the water in, and after. We do it afterwards, but idk.
@@trilliance I dechlorinate while I'm refilling. But my water doesn't even test for chlorine. I do it just in case
@@trilliance I use a Python for my 65 USG tank.
I pull a Measuring Cup of water from my Tank and put 7 ml of Seachem Prime into the Cup, for a typical 35 USG Water Change.
I add this to the Tank just before I start to Fill.
Don't be in a rush to refill and you can Monitor the New Water Temperature compared to the remaining Tank Water.
When I get to about 2 inches from my desired Fill Height I slow the water to a trickle and then I can use the Unit's Shutoff Valve and NOT have much Backpressure created getting back to the Faucet.
@@apaulmcdonough2170 Thanks for that info about putting your dechlor before filling. I also use a Python. Luckily it fits on my bathroom sink and can reach across the house. I use the kitchen thermometer for the tank, and then measure the outgoing water to make sure it's the same. It always ends up the right temp in the tank afterwards. To stop filling, I just take the end of it out, but it does have that pressure. I'll take your advice on how to do that next time. :)
When do you de-chlorinate the water you just added? Right before you add the new one or after?
Usually after
Awesome hack! Thanks
Ok how do you syphon the waste
Beautiful fish great looking tanks.
This is cool! How do you adjust the temperature of the new water you put in the tank? And do you put water conditionner?
At this point I can pretty much feel the temperature by hand and then I do my water conditioner
@@JJGills Ok thanks !!
Awesome
My total cost was under $20 including hoses clamps and adapters
Man that will take all day
Excellent video, thank you for posting. #SUBSCRIBED
I use toilet bowl parts it just takes 1 flush and the water goes to the garden- simple.
Nice. Everybody finds a setup that works for them after a while. I finally gave in and started using a pump for my African cichlid tank
That is pretty awesome
Nice. Thanks
Smart hack.. 👍
naaaa... I tried this initially for just once or twice and found this very very very time consuming when you got 30 gallon tank. It will take longer than 40 minutes waiting on the trickling to empty your tank... Just get yourself a submersible pump; it doesn't have to be very expensive one. I bought one for less than 25 buck and it pumps about 180 gallon an hour. Connect the pump to the pipe and put it in the fish tank. It only takes 7 to 10 minutes to empty my tank and another 7 to 10 minutes to refill. Another thing too .... sometime it is not easy to get your siphon going.
Height has a bit to do with it. If the python end isn't lower than the end you have in the tank it's super slow. That being said, I have a lot more tanks now so I use a pump in my big tanks.
What if my tap water has chlorine in it?
That's what dechlorinator is for
😊 thanks.
That's what I'm here for! Fish keeping doesn't have to be expensive
@@JJGills thank you. 😊
Your not worried about putting tap water directly in the tank? With no water conditioner to take out the harsh chemicals like chlorine etc?
My city water has surprisingly low levels of chlorine but I still treat it just in case
people with city water but the conditioner straight into the tank before filling
Does not work for mine for some reason. As soon as I shut off the water at the sink, there's no more suction 🤷🏼♀️
Once the siphon has started flowing, you should be good to go. Have you tried turning the water pressure all the way up?
Depends upon how high the end of the Hose in the tank is compared to Faucet Height.
Don't really need a lot of Faucet Water Pressure because of the Jet Venturi on the Faucet adapter that screws into the T Fitting.
Do you have a shower nearby? Create a natural siphon into the shower and then hook up to fill back up the tank
Just use a water pump take water out way faster
How long does it take? Just use a pond pump drain fast! I have a 110, 80% water change takes like 10 min.to drain 10 to refill.
I'm not sure how you clean your gravel and in-between.
@@midnull6009 a complete Python does come with a Gravel Vacuum Tube, and there are longer ones available for deeper tanks.
They screw onto the "Tank End" of the hose, which has a shutoff valve.
There is also an optional rigid "J Hook" offered for refilling.
@@apaulmcdonough2170 I need to take a look at those!
Draining the tank is fine, cuz I recycle that water in my garden. BUT, filling it up again is a damn pain, lol.
@@midnull6009 the J Hook screws onto the Python Hose, after unscrewing the Vacuum Tube.
This way you Don't have to stand there holding the hose as the Tank Fills.
@@apaulmcdonough2170 oohhh!
An Oscar? How did you train him not to forage from the community?
I've had 2 Oscars now, and the tank mates just learn to let the Oscar eat and then eat his scraps. And then I throw a little flakes on top for good measure. Never had an Oscar interested in flakes lol
It’s gross to have the poopy fish water going down your sink. I put my hose outside and let the dirty water go out into the yard. (I don’t have a utility sink)
You don’t have to condition the water?
I just didn't show that step. I definitely recommend conditioning the water.
It’s great for water changes but how do you suck out the fish poop etc?
I don't recommend using this to suck up too much from the substrate as it will clog your sink drain and cause an awful smell. I use a separate hose to drain the water & junk outside then use the Python pieces to refill. 😉
@@LeslieF0330 Hi Leslie. Do you just check the water temp that’s going back in the tank on the end it’s coming back out on a fix it accordingly?
@@jamesjames6792 Pretty much. I let the water run in the faucet for a bit first then monitor the temp from the tank as it goes in. As long as the temp doesn’t make any drastic changes they’ll be fine.
@@LeslieF0330 Awesome. Thank you
@@LeslieF0330 Same
Isn’t that bad too add sink water without being cleaned??????well with your fish inside
Doesn't make much difference.
You should look into a water pump . It's faster and Doesn't waste water .
A natural siphon won't waste water. That's what I do with my python
BTW in UK this replacement pump is £15 😫
oof. that's almost $20 US isn't it?
@@JJGills yea 20$
Wait…. _THAT FITTING IS GARDEN HOSE?!!??!!?_
lol yep
I recommend this only for water change as you cant substrate vacuum.
Once water extracted i recommend highly to add clean water manually after you have conditioned it .
I agree. Especially in Florida.(just because I’m familiar with our water conditions) Condition the water before putting it in the tank.
I use a Python for my 65 USG, in Long Beach, CA.
I keep two Measuring Cups, an 8 oz (1 cup) and a 32 oz (1 quart).
Before I start Draining, I fill both with Tank Water.
The 1 Cup gets 7ml of Seachem Prime. (Standard W/C is 35 USG.)
This is added immediately BEFORE I start the Refill.
With the 1 quart I add Seachem Acid Buffer since my City Tap Water has high 7 to high 8 pH.
I add 4 oz, at a time, of this Solution as the Tank fills.
Works fine.
A Complete Python comes with a Gravel Vacuum Tube and longer ones are available for deeper Tanks.
The other option offered is a rigid J Hook for filling.
Unscrew the Vac Tube and screw on the J Hook.
Hmm I vacuum just fine. I will say that I create a natural siphon and drain into my shower. The siphon is powerful enough for vacuum. Then I hook up to sink and fill up. My 40 takes a total time of roughly 20 mins.
- 6:06 What did you name Oscar ? 😳 ❤❤❤
OMG don't waste that aquarium water! If you have a garden or indoor plants that water is liquid gold!
So sorry you didn't show the piece you used to fit it to your pipe
What do you mean? It's all hose fittings
@@JJGills I'm referring to the piece between the python and the faucet if you had shown that piece and tell us it's dimensions that would have been a big help
Aren't you pumping water straight from the yap to your tank untreated
I treat right after.
Python is not eco friendly 🌍 need to save the planet 🌎 man
Why is it not eco friendly? Just turn the water off once the siphon is going and you are not using water (many people think you need to run the water to suck water out, but that is not true).
How? I don't even use water for my siphon. What are you doing to save the planet? I can assure you that using a phone is not something
Save the planet 😂 from what??!! 😂😂
that's not a good water change. The poop are toxic. Need to move around the bottom to clean
You dont always have to vacuum to do a water change. Just pulling out water will remove nitrates. It's the vacuum that gets the detritus. But vacuum isn't required each change.
Why isn't anyone talking about THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER GOING IN THE FISH TANK!! If the water's too cold you can kill all of your fish.
When I do manual water changes I make sure The temperature out of the faucet around 78° with my thermometer.
You could shock your fish and kill them easily especially if The water is cold in the winter. I don't understand why nobody's talking about this?
It's clickbait to say it's a $5 hack. You're not including $10 for 25 ft of hose, you're not including another $40 for two male adapters, female adapter, faucet adapter and flow valve. t the end of the day it ends up costing nearly $50. I had a 40% coupon from Amazon and got mine for $40 and save the hassle
I feel like most ppl have some kind of hose. I ended up spending about $10 the main piece and adapters. But if you got a good deal on the whole thing, I'm happy for you 👍🏾
Why are you adding water to that tank with a garden hose that's first mistake second mistake the ammonia chemicals that are in the regular tap water should not be going into that tank filter out those chemicals do not use a garden hose you are to use a drinking hose only
How is the garden house a mistake? Every good fish owner puts declorinator in their tap water.
Dale, I can tell you have no idea what you're talking about.
A garden hose is fine.
@@tonybeop I think he’s saying it needs to be conditioned before it goes in the tank. I know it Florida it does. But it’s probably ok to condition it as it fills. But then again I’m not a pro.
I'm sure he put declore in there....
Do you need a garden hose or can you use the typical tubing that comes with aquarium water siphoning kits?
To use the siphon tubing, you'd have to have a hose adapter which is another couple bucks
