As a person who makes a part of their living playing the clarinet, I have been a huge fan of this woman for years. She is able to do things with the clarinet that are truly beyond even the highest-caliber of training available - in other words: you cannot teach what Doreen is capable of doing. Having seen almost all of the videos of her playing on the streets and shredding (she also is an amazing vocalist), what really strikes me in this video is how incredibly humble she is. I've been playing the clarinet for 8 years and I'm now in my first year of music school, it's definitely worth it to keep playing! With enough dedication and practice, I'm sure that one day you'll be on Doreen's level! :)
Seeing all the comments from clarinetists and other musicians to that effect, I am left awed that THIS lady sits and performs on street corners like she's just a, for lack of a better word, 'normal' person.
Antonio Torres I've seen her and I've been blessed I know it now , I have all the respect in the world for Doreen and her accomplishments . Best wishes always Doreen Ketchens !
As someone who didn't conform to standard orchestra "rules" and "etiquettes" for classical music I can assure you She got kicked out of many bands/orchestras for playing exactly like this. I'm just so glad she never gave up!
In my mind/headcannon she's probably been playing that clarinet in church for like 40 years. Like a clarinet version of Sam Cooke or something. Then one day someone recognized that she's quite possibly the best in the world.
Actually, she is classically educated and playing jazz came later in life. She studied clarinet performance at the Hartt School and had many notable (classical) teachers.
@@organizedchaosmark It’s like sometimes people forget that Picasso also had great “basic” skills. Rarely people go above and beyond without the fundamentals.
You touch on a good point - it is so difficult to transcend past the basic analysis that comes with classical or controlled training. I can only dream of doing it some day. But she could not have this control without first starting with the basica
I actually cried - even more so since I had seen her video playing on the street, and was asking myself "why is she not performing in the greatest concert halls??" She literally prays through this clarinet. People like her are a gift from God Almighty to inspire us all.
Because playing the streets is traditional NO. If she wanted to be paying concert halls all the time I'm sure she could. She's widely recognized as a famous clarinet player.
@@Crazy_Diamond_75 While playing on the street is a tradition and there are great players who started this way, a great musician has a slim chance to reach the right recognition and compensation just by doing that. She definitely has the quality for the best concert halls, yet reaching there also requires someone to notice you who could make a decision to book you. There are other worthy musicians who do not have that fortune. I'm glad to have discovered her on youtube. She should be internationally recognized and have a major-label recording contract.

@@bobstratton6362 but things aren't emancipated from each other. And also, the author of this comment is talking about her impression and her image about herself so you dont have nothing to say about skin color
She plays like the clarinet like it's a voice her mind is yearning for, but her body is incapable of producing, and the two, at last, have found themselves together. That's the best way I can put it. It was absolutely beautiful. Flawless.
Wow. It's been a year and I'm revisiting this again. Her playing still seems so amazing to me. It's such a raw and emotionally stark contrast to the controlled and synchronized reading of notes on a sheet of paper that surround her. In a very real way though, that's a benefit to her as the contrast emphasizes and elevates her raw and emotional style of playing. The only thing that ruined this for me then, and still does now, is the audience clapping through her playing.
was watching this pretty harp player kill her instrument literally..making sounds didn’t think possible on it.. it was just her and the harp and it blew me away cause i didn’t think much of the harp but it wasn’t harps fault
Someone linked me to this saying it made them cry. I thought OK I'll listen but that's a little dramatic. So I listened and that is the exact point I welled up.
The ancestors were there, but not only those connected to her by blood. Also the spirits of all the great black composers and musicians like Johnny Dodds, George Lewis, Rudolph Dunbar, William Grant Still, Sidney Bechet and countless others who practically defined what clarinet music is today. The long tradition of African American clarinet music, that she embodies so gracefully.
If I’d have known it could sound like that when I was a kid in music class wishing I had a flute instead of a clarinet, I would have been going home begging my parents to buy me one. I am so grateful to be able to hear Doreen play, it’s truly as though this instrument was made for her.
Lol I always wished I played the flute instead of the clarinet too, because the flute was so much smaller and easier to carry. Now I wish I never stopped playing.
She deserves her name written in the clouds with all the other great musicians of history. I'm so glad she's alive during our time. I'm ashamed to be just now learning about her.

Twenty years later, I have picked up my clarinet again. I never knew a clarinet could make these tones. Thanks for sharing this God-given gift Ms. Doreen!
I might get mine fixed and pick it back up. Love her playing. I wonder what kind she plays? Mine is just an school entry level Bflat Bundy brand.

She studied clarinet performance at the Hartt School and had many notable (classical) teachers.
man if it's true it's their loss, this woman is god tier
@@organizedchaosmark It’s like sometimes people forget that Picasso also had great “basic” skills. Rarely people go above and beyond without the fundamentals.
You touch on a good point - it is so difficult to transcend past the basic analysis that comes with classical or controlled training. I can only dream of doing it some day. But she could not have this control without first starting with the basica
I actually cried - even more so since I had seen her video playing on the street, and was asking myself "why is she not performing in the greatest concert halls??"
She literally prays through this clarinet.
People like her are a gift from God Almighty to inspire us all.
wow I have same thought with you while watching her street performance and suddenly the youtube automatically recommended this video for me
So true. She is amazing
She truly is like one of a kind in the truest sense of the word
As a clarinetist of 40 years, I proclaim this woman needs a glass crystal mouthpiece or clarinet! Imagine!!

She plays like the clarinet like it's a voice her mind is yearning for, but her body is incapable of producing, and the two, at last, have found themselves together. That's the best way I can put it. It was absolutely beautiful. Flawless.
She can sing really well.
This is crazy, I didn't even know a Clarinet could sound anything like this much less serve as such a powerful lead instrument. She is incredible!
