    The chain was a very good idea. I had an old friend lose half his arm when a split rim blew off. There no joke.

    You need a giant bottle of baby powder when you are dealing with a tube. Powder lets the tube & tire slip a little making positioning the valve stem possible w/o ripping it off. Chain is a good idea when filling so it doesn't get stuck on your roof if the ring lets go.

    I love them older jeeps! A buddy of mine told me to take a ride in his and I went four wheeling on a trail on his farm so I came upon a pile of old cinderblock that was piled up and had been there for years. I climbed up and over that pile and it went just as easy as could be. I even had to turn around and come back. That jeep was awesome!

    You done good! Brings back 1970s Army memories, breaking down 20" split rims to patch tubes in the field. Sure makes one appreciate things like impact wrenches and a shop to work in...

    I used to be a truck tire repair guy. We used to just let the air out then lay down the tire and whack the ring with a sledge hammer. Knocking all the rust off in the process. Then easy pry bar the ring off. Also on installation use the sledge for the last part of the ring to save your feet. We used a cage when blowing up tires cause if they blow with a tire and 90lbs pressure they could easily kill somebody.

    I used to work for a truck repair shop where a good part of our business was semi-tractor trailer tires, six or eight of them a day sometimes. Most of them were the split-ring type.
    They never worried me as much as the split-rim type, those scared the heck out of me. I really like the idea of wrapping it up with a chain first, I never thought of that before. That's one of the reasons I like watching your channel, Issac. I get to see new ways of doing things all of the time! Great job as always!

    I had a job for a couple years when I was in High School changing semi tires that were split ring. It was probably the hardest job I ever had. We used a sledgehammer to loosen the split ring and pried it off with pry bar that had a piece round stock welded near the prying end as a fulcrum to help get the ring off. The sledge was a normal sledge on one side and the other side had like curved duckbill for breaking the bead of the tire and it weighed 10 pounds.

    I used to work at a tire shop we had a cage built just for these and semi truck tires. They have the same strength as a compressed coil spring. They will take limbs off. The chain is a new to me and a good idea. Thanks man for the extra mental tool in my mental toolbox

    I've changed hundreds of those on trucks and forklifts. lol some weighting over 365 lbs. Ive always put the tire , tube and tire flap together then put a tiny bit of air in to hold flap straight. Then install on rim. glad you tried to stay safe. they can rip your head off.

    Been almost 20 years since I last changed split ring tires. I don't miss it one bit but I always put the ring side facing down with strap. One thing is for sure is you don't stand over them when removing them! They have a tendency of springing out unexpectedly no matter how slow and careful you are at prying them. Get longer pry bars for next time.

      Having worked on my share of split rim wheels, taking them apart isn't a big deal, the dangerous part is when you air them back up and the bead seats into place. If the ring is going to come off by itself, that's when it's going to happen. I live close to an Air Force base and an airman was airing up a tire and didn't put it in a cage, the ring came off when the bead seated and caught him under the chin. Needless to say, he literally lost his head!

    • @DeathGrimmR
      @DeathGrimmR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinboothe9991 I did 6 to 10 of these tires when deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in 03. The first time one sprung out when prying it hit my inner thigh and genitals causing server pain and bruising. After that i started using a 8ft pry and another vehicle for prying. I seen guys in other units lose limbs. I've had them fly out when airing up so I'd flip them to face the ground when airing up with a strap. They are dangerous either way.

    • @kevinboothe9991
      @kevinboothe9991 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DeathGrimmR military split rims must be different than civilian or implement (farm) type, I've never seen or had a ring fly off with that much force when removing it. I have seen a tire lift about 6' in the air when a tire was airing up and the ring came off, the tire was upside-down at the time, it was crazy. We always for the most part used a cage when airing up one of these. I will say that the rim he was working on was a lot different than the ones I ever worked on, it did look like there was a lot more tension on the ring. The type we dealt with weren't like that, the type we did, once you got the end of the ring up over the wheel, you could take it the rest of the way off by hand.

    I worked at a garage when I was in high school. I can remember during harvest season walking in every day and seeing 5 or 6 split rim tires off of grain trucks waiting for me to repair them. We always crossed the arms on the center post lift and dropped the lift on them when we blew them up. I never had one come apart on me but a friend did and it broke his arm pretty bad, he was lucky that's all that happened to him, those things are dangerous.

    I have found when breaking lug nuts loose it works better if you do it before jacking up the vehicle. When on the ground the wheel is held in place and more of the effort you apply to the lugs is put into turning the lugs. Once off the ground part of your effort is used in turning the wheel.

    When I was in high school we owned a Gulf gas station! We were the only ones in the small town I lived in that repaired large truck tires and we repaired lots because we lived right in the heart of coal county in Western Kentucky! I always put 2 chains on each tire and wheel and turned the ring towards the ground when I aired them up! I never lost a ring but I did see my Dad have one that blew off one time and it sounded like dynamite 🧨 going off!! After that we got a rack to air them up in!

  • @marcpavlik8776
    @marcpavlik8776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Used to change splits with my dad on his truck 35+ years back. These are split rings and not true full split rims, these can be killers but are not quite as deadly as the full split rims could be. We bubble balanced all of dad's wheels and it worked fine. Clean and clean some more like you did, no rust, no dirt and yes, no grease or oil. Make sure the rim is fully seated before adding any air, with a hand sledge.
    The chain is highly recommended, very smart move, but wrapping it more isn't a bad idea but keep the splits of the rings further away from the chain crossing and it helps make sure it won't twist out if one does blow (we wrapped dad's tires 4 rounds with chains) When airing them up do not lean over the tires period, when smacking the ring do it at low pressure if it isn't seated in it will be, if not and she pops you've been cut in two or at least screwed up for life from shrapnel and if you are lucky you'll only lose a pair of britches and underwear. Once aired they are safe unless you blow up a rim, tire or maybe a severe enough accident, then the rings can potentially become flying saucers, ask me how I know. Dad worked shops for much of his early career and was familiar with these rims, I learned from the best.
    There was a truck stop in South Sioux City Nebraska, The Truck Haven on old Highway 20. They had a cage made of 4" steel pipes for airing splits up for semi's and one blew up in the cage. Shattered windows and eardrums in the shop and literally rocked the building scaring people even in the cafe side of the building. The pipes of the cage were deformed and bent when the ring/rim hit them. They can kill if not done correctly. Full splits rims earned their name as Widowmakers, however these with just the split rings are still very capable of killing.

    We have a couple of old utility trucks. One is an auger truck the other one is a bucket truck. Both vehicles have split rims. We blew a tire on the auger truck off of I65 in Warrior Alabama west of Birmingham. The inter tire was flat. We found a used tire store near Gardendale that sold new Chinese TYREs. The kid who mounted it spoke no English. We had them mount another tire on the other side. We drove those tires for ten years.

    Excellent video Issac :) yes becarefull on splitting rim rings also when change do new valves stems always to plus not sure make anymore there used be excellent tires in Load Range D brand of Firestone and called Fire Hawks 2 they were like Army tires and loads meat tread last long time ! But tell my late Father had on 1978 GMC High Series Serria 25 3/4 ton with 1 ton suspension and that truck went thru lots mud and all 4 season plus loads miles drive never got stuck in 2 wheel drive truck was ! But fun part put on 1983 sold truck in 1994 still lots meat on them! But never made noise and did excellent on farm too! Also when got my first truck 1972 Ford F350 extended cab tow truck on road he had 6 tires never used so bought them and used for 20 years before change them to new tires and were 950/16.5 LT Load Range D those Firestone and got 750.000 miles new set of Bridgestones could get those Firestone anymore that was in 2005 ! But you have good luck with Load Range D tires Issac just check air pressure weekly to monthly and if need air anytime but max pressure use them at 40 PSI max only in Winter and Summer Seasons use 38 PSI max get last long time ! If tow trailer and off road use 38 PSI max pressure to ! That what use on 16 or 16.5 tires in my 2 and 4×4 drive experience too also share my experiences with helpful hints always!

    Great call on chaining it.
    Baby powder works wonders on getting the tube and rim liner into the tire and situated.

    If you are ever in a tire place and see a tall row of yellow pipes, I dunno, about 5-6 feet high, they come up from the floor and do a "U" turn and go back down, and there is like 4-5 of them, that is the "Headache rack" you roll those tires in there and blow them up, if for some reason when the tire seal pops on there if the ring comes off its restrained by the yellow pipes. I guess they are built to do a set, 18 wheelers are made like that. Back in the 1960's when my Grandfather had Lilley's Superette at Five points he had a young boy who would change 18 wheeler tires, one of those rings blew off and it blew the ring and his cap high as the electric wires, it just missed his forehead. Those clip on air chucks are made so you can safely blow up those tires, clip them on and walk away!! (18 wheeler ones, they use 60-80 lbs of air, normal air pressure!)

    Great video. Like the idea of the chain. I don't think they can balance tires that big. I could be wrong. I asked a couple tire places about doing 33x12.5 and said it was too big for the balancer

    Everybody over thinking here, split rings are no problem at all. It's the older sure enough split rims that are so dangerous. Ive done probably a hundred of these in my life. Never an issue.. unless you get hold of extremely rusted rims then you trash them.. btw it's hotter than it's ever been when under the sun. I think we are getting closer to the sun and have less atmosphere to protect us from it . I sweat so much I have to change clothes 3 times a day when working out in this humidity like he's doing

    get yourself some balance beads... they work great , even for motorcycles.... they sell smaller beads for tube tires so they fit down the stem

    I wonder if you could find some different rims that would fit that beast…would definitely be lighter to reduce unsprung weight.
