You are a smart cookie. I have loved this song for like 44 years. You and I like this song for the same reasons.

At the end when he says "did it need to be so high" he's talking about the wall around him she built.

Good call! I never made that connection. I always wondered what that meant.

The wall was a masterpiece. Everybody's favorite is generally dark side of the Moon but the wall has always been one of my favorites such a powerful song

Same because the 1 part to brick in the wall was 1 or the 3 songs I knew of pink floyd before we started. Which I have great memories with that song and my uncle and one time in college haha.

This is probably the most accurate reaction I've seen from someone unfamiliar with the song/album I really recommend you listen to the whole "concept rock opera" even if it's not a reaction video p.s if you want see some amazing music try Sorrow and comfortably numb by pink floyd live pulse tour at Earls Court

Times have changed from when this song came out. "Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?" This was a cold war worry, and the thought of nuclear war was on everyone's mind. So I child being worried about a nuclear war was real.

The way you took the symbolism is right on. The guy who created the concept of this album, Roger Waters, actually performed this at the literal site of “the wall” between east and west Germany, sometime around 1990? He wasn’t writing about that when he wrote these lyrics, but he obviously agreed with what you said, it can be taken on several different levels. As most Pink Floyd songs can be. Each song is usually part of a story, but there is always symbolism that can be understood in different ways for different listeners.

Thank you and interesting. Their performance on the wall is one I want to see and I know there were a few others so depending who was there I want to choose and do a video. That is cool he talked about that though and it is true. Their music can be taken so many ways, it's what makes it astounding.

This song is about an overbearing mother damaging her son by controlling him.

Just a head's up... Pink Floyd's album 'The Wall' from 1979 is truly the most disturbing record to ever sell 10+ million copies in the US... a double album that was written primarily by bassist/ vocalist Roger Waters. The lyrics were autobiographical... Waters was seeing Pink Floyd at the peak of commercial success, but he found himself increasingly isolated from the band members, the audiences, his loved ones (hence, the wall of isolation to keep everybody out)... His misery in that time, the band's impending break-up, inspired the lyrics.
'Mother' is Waters reflecting on his past... his father died in World War II before he was born, so Roger Waters found himself being raised by an overprotective single mom in England in the aftermath of so much death & destruction from war... The context is the mom doing her son harm by the incessant obsession w/ keeping him safe; all her fears and paranoia are now being passed onto you, and u end up building a wall of isolation that she helped create.
David Gilmour (guitar & vocals) recalled that Waters would give little for the band to contribute musically... he would disappear and later emerge w/ new tracks that he and the band had to play in the studio... In the end, Gilmour felt that 'The Wall' had "lacked soul"... Pink Floyd internally was in tatters; keyboardist Richard Wright was basically fired, didn't play much on the record... but did the shows for 'The Wall'...
Roger Waters eventually quit the band in 1984 after a 'filler' Pink Floyd album 'The Final Cut' in 1983 and a compilation release 'Works'.

You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story.
In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show and they didn't play this. I was so bummed. 😭
    Happy belated 4/20😁😎

You know, listening to The Wall selectively is like reading a book by selecting chapters or watching selected episodes from Game of Thrones. This is a concept album.

You will learn more about the relationship between Mother and Pink as you listen to the album. But you did grasp the meaning (or at least how I interpret it) pretty well.

Thank you and I definitely am aware from when I did the dark side album how the previous songs we did singularly though I may did decent on meaning, with the surrounding songs play more into. So I did my best and look towards when we do the album.

In the film (The Wall), Pink's mother has just lost her husband to the war, she suddenly becomes a widow and a single mother having to take care of her son.
All she has left is her son, and she will do whatever it takes to protect her child from all harm.
She hugs him so tightly that her embrace would end up suffocating the one she seeks to protect.
Like what, all qualities pushed to exaggeration, becomes a defect. Exaggerated love inevitably leads to obsession.

Those references to a firing line, waste of time, and trust in a government will become clearer when you listen to the whole album. And some well-meaning advice... do NOT watch the movie before you have developed an understanding of what the album is about.
