Yea, except unfortunately, to easily steal all loot necessary, whilst picking all locks in the archive, it’s easier to have Astarion with you, instead of Gale. Personally I run Paladin and always have shadow heart in my crew. So usually I only have two interchangeable slots, which for this fight I had Karlach and Astarion (only because of sleight of hand looting)
I just saw someone uploaded of a video of this fight and didn't have the music on smh. Then in MY GAME, I had to reload the fight and when I did the generic music was playing. So tragic

I made Lae'zel menace him and then frightened him with Shadowheart. Then Gale, Lae'zel, and I just stomped him with summons and melee attacks. Homie only got one attack off before he died. I also used the black hole ability from Illithid powers and Gale one-shotted all of the other baddies. Such a good, fun, fair fight :)

Used Otto's irresistible dance on Raphael, he was stunlocked the entire fight 😄 Got rid of the Cambions, destroyed the soul pillars and afterwards it was just my whole party hammering down on a stunned Raphael 😄

If you haul in 8 smokepowder barrels and pre-place (on the way in) two next to each pillar, then after this boss fight starts you can blow them up (with fire) and make the fight a whole lot easier.
This fight and the accompanying music are still my favorite from the whole game. I've never been so excited to die in a fight multiple times so I could do it all again and keep listening
I'm sure when I was fighting Raphael he never entered into his Ascendant phase. I had Hold Monster on him and got him down to about 1/3 of his health when he broke out of the spell but I never saw his form change as shown at 19:00 in the video. He remained in his "human-looking" form right down to when he died.

having gale in the party with the staff of cherished necromancy and blight / circle of death on tap combined with a single casting of otto's irresistable dance from a scroll turns this fight piss easy. gale and karlach can wreck cambions in few turns and then you just gang up on raphael. i thought you could maybe save the souls trapped in the pillars, so i didn't bring them down. the resulting 27AC raphael is annoying as shit to hit with martial attacks, but with him dancing its just a matter of rolling the dice enough till he dies.
I killed him straight up at level 10 on tactician, no tricks, no cheese, no second try. It's really easy if you have Hope and manage to persuade the demon from Act 2 to help you out.
i had gale with disintegrate took down the pillars in 4 turns and then literally pulverized raph it seriously took almost a full 100 of of raph each turn it was a quick fight after he turned into the fire monster. any way you did great !
I went with calmer minds and set up a little Bomb of Extraordinary Proportions for Raphael and nuked the entire room, surprisingly most allies survived
I literally just ran away (first putting a wall of thorns to keep the devils back a bit, and also had the big red Shrek as an ally) and kept putting cloud of daggers and other spells like that at every entrance until I reached the bath. The daggers killed all of their goons and then I used invulnerability dome while using Halsin air nymph to constantly daze Raphael (I would teleport back into the dome after attacking him) and it killed him easy. (My original plan was to use the healing bath to not die but it doesn’t work after you initiate combat)
In my fight, I had my sorceror chug a potion of speed, and immediately downed the soul pillars with Disintegrate and Twinned Spell / Quickened Spell - the spell will always one-shot the pillars since its minimum damage is 50 and the pillars are weak to force / blunt damage. You want to kill the pillars ASAP, because as long as one stands, Raphael gets stronger each time one of your characters gets downed, and can basically one-shot any member of your team. His second phase is also severely weakened if the pillars are gone before he initiates it.
I had him dead before I got the pillars down. I noticed really early on while getting to hope that damn near every demon does fire damage, so I went and had everyone chug a fire resistance elixer well in advance. My shadowheart was respec'd into a tempest cleric, and my astarion was a bladebard/thief/warrior, my MC was a Conjuration Wizard, and I brought a pretty bog standard berserker karlach. First round, I drenched everything with a high level create water and after that I just hammered everything with electricity damage. I sent some of my summons after the pillars while my Air Myrmidon went around smacking demon bitches and body blocking. I had a couple ghouls from the Thracian necromancy book which basically just ran around and took hits from demons- which, the whole point I have those ghouls at all is because they don't take spell slots and the enemy will waste damage on them even though they are basically expendable. Electrified water can interrupt attempts to walk across it, heavily restricting the mobility of the demons, and my high ranged damage party basically just blasted the shit out of them. Karlach herself was immune to getting shocked so she could go where she pleased and I had her jumping around and ruining peoples day. Honestly, I didn't take enough damage to warrant healing until he got into his ascended form. I had Hope mostly just hanging around and playing it safe because she was the only character I was actually worried about dying. The thing is, there are ways I could have optimized my build and party better. And I kinda wish I had brought something better suited towards killing those pillars- my karlach was running around with Baluran's greatsword- which was definitely a mistake in retrospect. I had no real force damage, the only blunt damage came from *ice storm* and the mace Shadowheart had, and having Shadowheart actually use her mace is almost a wasted action because of how much damage her call lightning can do. Ice storm would freeze my wet surfaces, which was generally less valuable than an electrified surface- so I was hesitant to use it.
I've found out that Raph and Harleep for some reason have very hard time resisting Tasha's Hideous Laughter. You basically cast the spell, then pummel them for 4-5 turns for free.
Everyone says that spells work on him well, when in my playthrough they either don't work or he get rid of them in one turn lol. Am I just unlucky or what? Eventually I summoned an elemental and Raphael never got up after this.
The fight has been patched. You're right. Tashia's hideous laughter and planar binding doesn't work on him. After his turn he automatically saves from the spell you cast! @julietm.5425
@@jonesjay515 It still costs the toughest boss in the game a full turn, at the cost of one PC's action and a 1st-level spell slot. You can just assign Gale to spam Tasha's on Raphael while the rest of the party deals with his minions and wrecks the pillars. Then Gale switches from Tasha's to Hold Monster, and everyone crowds in close to beat him down. Those 666 hit points melt away fast when three people are getting automatic crits on all their attacks.
Good fight. I didn’t even break the pillars in my game, I used 2 globes of invulnerability scrolls and just melee’d the hell out of him lol. Hope comes in handy hardcore for this fight. I had no casters haha.
I did not even use the globe. After seeing the 666 count I almost gave up. I thought that the idiots had created another impossible obstacle ("more interesting"). But I went against the odds and little by little brought him down. I had to revive two characters after the battle and I lost his slave. Managed to overcome him with 10 xp. I had Shadowheart, Astarion, Laezel and my own edited wizard (human female) as leader. I was actually shocked that I managed to do it. And, yeah, i actually told a white lie: I had a protective shield put around Shadowheart for 10 turns. That was a crucial asset.
Seriously? Damn the amount of secrets we miss in the game are impressive... 🤣 I had to blast through using every Divine Intervention I had like "Please Gods, help me! I'm trying to get the fuck out of Hell!" 🤣
I left my OP shadowheart in camp cause I always take those who I think are the most relevant to the place I am going... and I regretted that a lot here
I've been stuck in this fight for 2 days, unfortunately since I'm not a champion in turn-based fights I'll have to accept the deal, otherwise I wouldn't have any hope
I guess I cheesed the fight… invulnerability and that one illithid power that makes you vulnerable are quite the blessing. (I gave Raphael the “heal when you attack but ur vulnerable lol” buff). Edit: yo wtf he turns into a dragon?
Damn, my team took Raphael down so quick I didn't even know he had that "Ascension" form! I just ignored him whilst Gale punted each pillar in a single hit with magic missile, then Lae'zel knocked him prone, and then my team just beat him to death in two turns (Spellmight / Lightning Charge Evocation Gale casting level 6 magic missile using the item that'll give you an extra level 6 spellslot did most of the damage, about 400 on his own then 200 split between everyone else).
I used Otto’s irresistible laughter and hold monster on Raphael and he never got any attacks off. I never saw his ascended form either 😂 that’s why I looked up this fight. Had to see if he could do anything cool
Here's my issue: Ok, I'm new to these games, and I wanna like them.... but it seems if you dont build a party with initiative you are fucked, period. All the cheese in the world dont matter if your whole team goes last. I'm sitting here with level 12 chars but no one built to go first and its pretty much impossible... doesn't matter how many summons i bring in, when it finally gets to my turned, usually the party is devastated and Hope is dead. Ive tried positioning my party in every which way i can think of before starting the fight, I can't even get to my wizards turn to cast globe of invulnerability. Thats what I hate about the difficulty in this game... It seems to require you to know in advance whats about to happen. If not it just immediately throws you on the back foot and you are always constantly fighting from behind.... People will always suggest "oh what, you dont have 'insert devastating build with item combos you have previous knowledge of' or 'cheese #45'.... but those aren't... good? solutions.... they just prove that the game requires outside knowledge to play or knowledge of borderline exploits. So what choices do I have? Save scum and remake a 'meta' party that doesn't represent my playstyle even though I was crushing until this specific fight? Throw 2 hours of gameplay away to go stock on pots elixirs and pots (cheese #65)? I think fights like the Ansur fight are much better designed. Adds roll in in waves after the start and are slotted randomly. Feels much better than fight starts, initiative rolls aaaaand sweet, 20 mobs get to go before me, i can go take a piss and reload. I would honestly just prefer the game straight up TOLD me at the start to make sure I had multiple characters with very strong initiative or I would basically feel depressed at the start of every fight. Or just put less, stronger mobs. Waiting multiple minutes for your turn is so aggravating on some of these fights. Much bigger fan of real time with pause instead EXACTLY because of high density fights. edit: lol, just tried again, had a decent start.... hope got one shot.
@@Lance-xy8hv yeah i just put alert on everyone. Now i have the opposite problem I destroy everything. I think I just dont like fights with lots of enemies compared to boss fights with adds. Boss fights feel smoother, i dont have the patience to wait 20 turns.
@@starkiller34 I feel that. Wish there was a fast forward button or something for fights with tons of enemy. Watching 10 people dash in a row gets old quick
Could you go house of hope and leave it without the hammer and no killing Raphael? Or you have to fight him anyway? Its a pity, i like his character, and he always was ok with you a your companions, just deals
You can enter the house, you can walk if you want, but the moment you pick up the hammer or some object from the display case, it comes to fight. However, you can enter and leave the house without any problem if you have not stolen anything.
I just did this today. I was worried, but I think Gale went down at the start once. After that, my healing build on Shadowheart fixed ip his issues instantly.
Damn I just cast tasha's hideous laughter on him in the beginning of the fight and he never got to transform. He just layed on the floor and got his a*s handed to him by everyone for 10 rounds. That was on normal difficulty. I gotta reload an old save and redo this without cc.
This fight was much easier than I expected. Maybe I was super lucky. I counterspelled his first spell in his Ascended form (After I prioritized destroying the soul pillars), then proceeded with successfully casting hold monsters for three consecutive turns (he failed them all even though it had 55% chance of failing, although he did saved at the end of each of his turns). Meanwhile hope demolished all the other demons with her divined intervention and banish spells (I practically ignored the cambions, which happened to end up the correct choice since their damage is pathetic. They look daunting and badass but they practically high HP imps. Or maybe it was so pathetic because they directed their attack to my fire resistant party members). The big guy was causing havok as usual with his BS invisibility shenanigans but Hope took care of him too. I ended up ganging on Raphael with my entire party and 2 summons, stunning him, dazing him, frightening him. He ended up doing completely nothing the entire fight. I don't even know how devastating his attack are.
Stand in the center with your party, cast Globe of Invulnerability. Then have your ranged attackers attack the pillars and your strongest player target Raphael. I had Karlach pick up and throw the cambions and anything else away from the globe's perimeters then had the Ranged attackers pick them off. Easy Peasy.
I was afraid to spam divine intervention because the demons had a feedback against holy damage. I felt super satisfied with the fight though and had lots of fun
I did this fight without touching the pillars and he never transformed? I just had Astarion sniping him from the shadows the whole fight and it was really easy. Kinda bummed because I thought he was gonna transform into that crazy true form but he literally just died. :/
You know the fight is something else when it has its own theme song
It doesn't just have its own theme song. Raphael is singing his own lyrics. If you silence him, his part of the song goes away.

I never even saw his second form, he died before reaching it
Hope used divine intervention in this fight in my game. They died instantly.
That was a crucial asset.
the hammer you get hear can destroy a pillar with just two hits. It hits 100% every time
Karlach used it in this video, she loved it haha
Seriously? Damn the amount of secrets we miss in the game are impressive... 🤣 I had to blast through using every Divine Intervention I had like "Please Gods, help me! I'm trying to get the fuck out of Hell!" 🤣
@@ivanberdichevsky5679lol same here buddy.
When you take "A hand? Anyone?" too far
I left my OP shadowheart in camp cause I always take those who I think are the most relevant to the place I am going... and I regretted that a lot here
Most epic fight in the game
I've been stuck in this fight for 2 days, unfortunately since I'm not a champion in turn-based fights I'll have to accept the deal, otherwise I wouldn't have any hope
I guess I cheesed the fight… invulnerability and that one illithid power that makes you vulnerable are quite the blessing. (I gave Raphael the “heal when you attack but ur vulnerable lol” buff).
Edit: yo wtf he turns into a dragon?
I struck a 20 with Yrgur as well lol, no other buffs, it felt amazing
Funny thing about this fight is that if you silence Raphael, he stops singing.
Ottos dance this, hold monster that, I let him power up for funsies
I hasted my mage and bard and then just unloaded scrolls of disintegration on him for a few rounds till he died.
I hate Korilla so she’s dies first
I just hit him with Ottos Dance and walloped him while he danced to his own tune
Chose the alert feat I have it on 3 of my party members and they always go first
@@Lance-xy8hv yeah i just put alert on everyone.
@@ianpd2541 you can stole the gloves, the necklace, golden camera, kills harleep and still leave the house of hope without fight.
Did it yesterday😅
@@clavedegato9263whaaat? How did you do that, since the only way out is through the portal, I think
This is the greatest boss song ever!!! WOW
I gotta reload an old save and redo this without cc.
my Storm Sorcerer ran Ralphael over with Chain Lightning (Legendary Staff that gives you Chain Lightning as an action with no spell slot requirement)
BEST FIGHT IN A COMPUTER GAME EVER!
For me, he sits at the head of the table... with Nerevar and Illusive Man...
...is worthy
5:16 *My favourite part, The House Of Hope!*
No one told me he turns into Balrog/Deathclaw!!!
He didn't even turn into his final form in my battle lol, surprised to see he could change.
Stand in the center with your party, cast Globe of Invulnerability. Then have your ranged attackers attack the pillars and your strongest player target Raphael. I had Karlach pick up and throw the cambions and anything else away from the globe's perimeters then had the Ranged attackers pick them off. Easy Peasy.
Always knock out hopes sister, she thanks you for not killing her during the fight 😇
lmfao I didnt even know he had a transformation, I just spammed divine interventions (2 from SH and 1 from Hope) so he never actually got to transform
I was afraid to spam divine intervention because the demons had a feedback against holy damage. I felt super satisfied with the fight though and had lots of fun
Bard class and Hope made this fight very easy for me. I’m spamming arrow of many targets while hope can spam that divine intervention spell
I did this fight without touching the pillars and he never transformed? I just had Astarion sniping him from the shadows the whole fight and it was really easy. Kinda bummed because I thought he was gonna transform into that crazy true form but he literally just died. :/
What hand crossbow is Astarian using? How did he fire two bolts with one action at 9:07?
Fairly certain you can dial wield hand crossbows
