Right. When you're learning any skill, 1-2 hours is a good balance imo, however it can vary from person to person. Some can handle 30 minutes at a time, some can do 5+ hours. Gotta find your rythm.

@@kielsol ya I know about the pomodoro technique but we're not machines, I found out that 45 minutes interval sessions is good for me, 25 is too short, so I can do around 4 sessions of 45 minutes each
Yeah it's kind of crazy how common the "I jumped straight to anatomy" mistake is. One way I like to think about it is that drawing is sort of like mental 3D modeling. Once you're comfortable creating and assembling forms in perspective, you realize that anatomy is simply a collection of very specific forms to memorize. Developing your understanding (and feeling!) of 3D space is so important because literally everything else depends on your ability to "3D model".
That "Practice how it works for you" is helpful for us full time working adults who want to get good at art but don't have much free time to pursue it.
One thing I think this video forgets: Don't be ashamed to brush up on your fundamental skills through warm ups. It makes your art even better by doing so. 😊

The few things that Krita doesn't do that CSP does, you will possibly never need. For free, it is truly awesome (though I prefer CSP). I bought a $20 Osu pad for drawing, and it worked shockingly well (though you need a PC). Draw a lot; check out other artists a lot; copy great drawings (a great way to pick up a new technique).
This video was exactly what I needed. I am a beginner in art and have been struggling with my recent character drawings. A lot of the things you said in the video really hit hard, like the burnout you mentioned or how anatomy won't necessarily help you if your fundamentals aren't good enough yet. I have finished a few drawings, but afterwards I always felt burnt out and unmotivated for a while, even though I had fun while drawing, because I spent too much time with too little breaks on it. I have been learning anatomy, thinking it would lead to improvements in my drawings, but even though I understood the shapes, I wasn't able to portray them in my drawings. So yeah, I agree with what you mention in the video and am looking forward to trying out the tips you suggested. I know David Finch's videos already and can confirm they are extremely helpful. Also some good humor throughout the video, made me chuckle sometimes^^

i agree with what you said with gesture and anatomy and I've seen so many times, people watch a video of gesture it seems simple but when they apply it it's just frustrating and you never understand what's wrong and you wonder why you can't improve
From wat i have seen, people dont understand "gesture". Gesture is the flow/force/energy/rythm/movement of the body . People often make mistake of adding anatomy or outlining silhouette into the gesture as s beginner, instead of keeping body proportion in mind and adding basic forms. Its like a dancing stickman without form or a mannequin eith the forms. Gotta understand the fundamentals you are learning and how to use/apply it. I researched thoroughly and look at multi examples. Sources for gestures: proko, lovelifedrawing, glenn vilppu, micheal hampton

This is amazing, your voice is super relaxing to listen to and you explain the steps so well. I had never seen anyone explain symbol drawing and it really explained why my art looked so "off" because I wasn't considering how I should be drawing how the object is in real life versus a symbol on a paper. I really hope your channel is able to take off and become popular because you so deserve it!
I'll add something for more intermediate students to consider for comics and manga. Movie making. The comic/manga artist is the set designer, costume designer, cinematographer, director, and does all the acting for the characters. So, movie watching is an occupational hazard! Its not a bad habit to get into as a beginner either, as there is a lot you can learn to add drama to your picture this way. A good example is look up clips of Citizen Kane. The first trick I learned in this vein was where Orson Wells goes on a berserk rampage in his house. The camera got lower and lower and lower, emphasizing how angry Wells' character was. Another good trick is in the first Avengers movie where they're looking up at the giant snake/dragon/mech thingy. By looking down on the characters it makes them look smaller and vulnerable so when they go into action they feel even more heroic. Genera that are useful for this sort of thing are Noir, superhero, martial arts, etc. Also there are movie shorts out there that are useful too. There are some Polish practitioners of Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA) That do period sword play movie shorts. With actual martial techniques from the old manuals. One is Crossed, you can find others. Hope some of that helps someone.

I think I only did DrawaBox for about 1-2 months and saw massive improvement in my understanding of perspective and imagining something in 3D space. I recommend that beginners also give it a go!
Well done. I use Krita mostly these days with a $60 dollar tablet. And you're right on references. I'd add that a lot of Manga Ka also trace for basic perspective. Not surprising given the insane workload they labor under. Plus, there is an artist (can't remember the name) who does space craft from everyday objects by using the basic shape to get angle and form, then they fill the details in.
Another comment I’d make is draw every day, even if it’s only a half hour. Just anything, everywhere, practice practice practice and DO NOT worry what it looks like, just do it. Keep the drawings and date them, stash them away and then take them out in a few moths and see how you actually have improved. You’ll be amazed. Remember too, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so often we are not happy with our own work and we must really learn to let it go and let others be the judge. I can guarantee that someone somewhere will like what you’ve drawn - you don’t have to. In the same way, don’t expect adulation, as you kind of say, fb likes etc are not what make your art, it’s you yourself.
I must say, this is the greatest recommendation I had in all year. The content is great, good pacing, good content, interesting and with funny comments here and there. The music is nice and soft, so it doesn't distract me from the content, which is higly appreciated. I really enjoyed the video and hope to see more of your content. First Guide was really the BEST ANSWER what i mean is dat if you never start you'll never know the limit of your capabilities the mistakes you've done and to observe your art carefully and see the things you can improve. If you never start you'll never finish.

I literally built up an entire list of 15+ art guides and videos all dealing stuff I thought was basic like anatomy but not one (other than this one) had “perspective” in them. I’m watching this video before I go to sleep and I feel like I might’ve dodged a bullet lol. I’ve already decked myself out with a decent sketchbook and Procreate but now I notice that I should probably do basic stuff on a sheet of paper to get those fundamentals down. I might edit this comment sometime later this year to see if I’ve gone anywhere.

I think this question is often stated by people that want to be good at drawing but don't actually enjoy the process of learning to draw (which is drawing). I for many years had a sense of wanting to learn to draw, I practiced and didn't really enjoy the process, I got to a point where I could see that if I continued I could possibly become good at it, but it's not worth it if you don't enjoy the process. So my advice is that if you need advice on starting to draw you might just not be into drawing, there's tons of starter guides, it's not some unsolved problem, you just need to draw, a lot.

hi, i am semi-professional furry artist, and i like helping beginner artists in the communities i interact with as sort of a hobby, and the two advice i always start with is 1.) use references 2.) join an art community; seeing these same points having such highlight in your vid was very satisfying for me personally; and i agree with you 100% with everything else in the vid, the importance of perspective as a fundamental, the importance of switching to seeing 3d, the damage of jumping to anatomy/gesture ahead of time, that learning in traditional is probably preferred against learning in digital; maybe i would hammer the point more on how focusing on social media hurts skill progress :P i think social media is a unique challenge to the beginners of today, along with defaulting to picture refs instead of irl refs; TLDR awesome vid, i'll keep recommending it to the beginners i interact with
elite brudda i've been interested in architecture however my drawings look like doodoo but i'm practicing between 10 mins to 2 hours each day on basic form and my arm feels more confident hope to one day become an architect
I don't personally believe there is talent in way that ppl think there is. I think so called "talent" is just having right mindset to study, practice, learn and never give up. What ever its sports, art, music and so on there are some benefits gained from genes etc but most of it is always through hard work and will to suck it up no matter what and this is what I believe is difference between ppl. Some want to be artist but do not want to put the effort being one and blame talent and then there are ppl who go through the process and grind the levels to become good artists

I used to draw traditinaly but stopped drawing for about 6 years, then in 2019 i tried go back and bought a cheap tablet and i tell you, this transition is so damn hard, even worse when i am a begginner totally "out of shape". We are ending 2022 and i still cannot get the handle of it.
I like to listen to younger people and their take on drawing and the how to of art. I don’t usually single out young or old, but sometimes someone older or younger can have a different perspective because of their freshness and new approach to the subject, or alternatively, perhaps because of their years of experience. I also think that no matter if your old or new to drawing, you can always and should always go back to the basics - don’t think that because you have learned all the basic skills, you don’t need this kind of video; don’t think you’re above the basics, or you won’t learn much or get better. As I get older, I know I have to go back to basics sometimes, like making an old recipe off by heart; sometimes it’s good to go back to the original source to see how much you’ve tweaked and changed it over time to suit your own style - perhaps a little too much in the wrong direction - and see why it’s not actually working like it used to. Thank you for your approach, your enthusiasm and knowledge. 🙂
I struggle so hard with drawing. I've been trying it on and off for 30 years and literal 3rd graders draw better than me. It's like my hands can't do a single thing my brain asks of them. I also struggle with the "no reference" meme. However, my biggest struggle right now is self hatred and embarrassment. I see what I draw and get SUUUPPEERRR discouraged. I'm glad I found this video! I doubt I'll ever be happy with my drawing ability, but this video helped me understand things a bit more. I am curious, though, how can I get better at 2d drawing? I like doing "symbolic" doodles, but they're always trash
Just work on smooth confident linework. Try to use as few lines as possible to draw something (this is called “line economy”). That’s the key to any good drawing, 2D or 3D
Question: How will I know, when I'm ready to move onto other things after doing some perspective? Like for example shapes and form, and after that gesture drawing.
Ideally you do perspective and form together, as you should be drawing forms *in perspective*. But the answer is, whenever you feel ready to, you can move to the next fundamental. I would say try Value next - ill be making a video on that soon.
Also, I wanted to say this too, feel free to ignore my advice. My advice is merely a suggestion to help anyone who feels stuck. If you want to do gesture ahead of the curve, go for it.
I'm having a really hard time learning perspective traditionally, because the books that I read teach the theorie (like perspective made easy, creative perspective, how to draw by Scott Robertson) but don't really show you haw to use the tools (for example how to use the correct degree ellipse tamplet for a car wheel ) Any advice ?
David Finch’s video on perspective is very good and makes it simple. But beyond that, you are right, a lot of books make perspective harder to learn than it needs to be. Perhaps I should make a video on this and simplify these ideas. When it comes to ellipses, remember you just need an oval. That’s it. dont elongate anything, dont over complicate it - just draw a simple symmetrical oval, and modify it until it looks right. This is an art hack I learned a bit ago that tremendously helps.
A set of Lego or wooden bricks, mahjongg tiles or even food boxes and containers spaced out across a table or room gives a sense of perspective and a reference to copy. Table tennis balls, marbles or Jaffas achieve the same for spherical shapes.
Just dropping by to give some testimony of my experience: 3 years ago I started to take drawing seriously. I was working in a pretty demanding project at work, staying away from my home city and returning only for the weekends. I started to take art classes on Saturday morning and loved it, the instructor was good, the environment was relaxed and fun and etc. Unfortunately I made the mistake of listening to the worst advice ever that I found on the Internet: "You must grind if you want to be good at art." Me, wanting to be better at drawing, decided to take this as gospel. Even my instructor warned me (strongly!) against it at the time, only to fall on deaf ears. So, I would return to the hotel after a tiresome day at work (from 7 AM to 6 PM!) and force myself to draw at least two hours and a half every day! Sometimes I would wake up at 4 AM just to complete the two hours! And by drawing I mean: fundamentals. I wasn't "allowed" to draw anything for fun until I got "good" at the fundamentals. Awesome right?! No. It really wasn't. Yes, there was some improvement in the first weeks, but looking back, it was negligible in the great scheme of things. All it did was to burn me out completely. After 2 months doing it, I started to dread picking up the pencil. The idea of the frenetic practice at late night, like a mad man was just horror. I stopped going to the art classes and then stopped drawing. Only on the second half of the last year I decided to pick the pencil again. But I would do different this time: I would create a habit of it, but I would respect my limits. No more crazy grinding. I would at least draw for fun half of my time drawing. Surprise, surprise: I started to improve and drawing started to become a fun experience again. To anyone listening: respect yourself. It is a journey, not a sprint.
Actually I was so Distracted because I wasn't know the right road to improve my art . I draw from really long long time and it was so random . Ok I improve but it really slow . By time I could make a better portraits but it need always to be better and has a lot of mistakes . The last time I felt that I really need a clear method to make things better and faster . There are some Polish practitioners of Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA) That do period sword play movie shorts. With actual martial techniques from the old manuals. One is Crossed, you can find others.

I think I only did DrawaBox for about 1-2 months and saw massive improvement in my understanding of perspective and imagining something in 3D space. I recommend that beginners also give it a go!

Well done. I use Krita mostly these days with a $60 dollar tablet. And you're right on references. I'd add that a lot of Manga Ka also trace for basic perspective. Not surprising given the insane workload they labor under. Plus, there is an artist (can't remember the name) who does space craft from everyday objects by using the basic shape to get angle and form, then they fill the details in.
Another comment I’d make is draw every day, even if it’s only a half hour. Just anything, everywhere, practice practice practice and DO NOT worry what it looks like, just do it. Keep the drawings and date them, stash them away and then take them out in a few moths and see how you actually have improved. You’ll be amazed. Remember too, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so often we are not happy with our own work and we must really learn to let it go and let others be the judge. I can guarantee that someone somewhere will like what you’ve drawn - you don’t have to. In the same way, don’t expect adulation, as you kind of say, fb likes etc are not what make your art, it’s you yourself.
I must say, this is the greatest recommendation I had in all year. The content is great, good pacing, good content, interesting and with funny comments here and there. The music is nice and soft, so it doesn't distract me from the content, which is higly appreciated. I really enjoyed the video and hope to see more of your content. I literally built up an entire list of 15+ art guides and videos all dealing stuff I thought was basic like anatomy but not one (other than this one) had “perspective” in them. I’m watching this video before I go to sleep and I feel like I might’ve dodged a bullet lol.
I’ve already decked myself out with a decent sketchbook and Procreate but now I notice that I should probably do basic stuff on a sheet of paper to get those fundamentals down.

I think this question is often stated by people that want to be good at drawing but don't actually enjoy the process of learning to draw (which is drawing). I for many years had a sense of wanting to learn to draw, I practiced and didn't really enjoy the process, I got to a point where I could see that if I continued I could possibly become good at it, but it's not worth it if you don't enjoy the process. So my advice is that if you need advice on starting to draw you might just not be into drawing, there's tons of starter guides, it's not some unsolved problem, you just need to draw, a lot.

hi, i am semi-professional furry artist, and i like helping beginner artists in the communities i interact with as sort of a hobby, and the two advice i always start with is 1.) use references 2.) join an art community; seeing these same points having such highlight in your vid was very satisfying for me personally; and i agree with you 100% with everything else in the vid, the importance of perspective as a fundamental, the importance of switching to seeing 3d, the damage of jumping to anatomy/gesture ahead of time, that learning in traditional is probably preferred against learning in digital; maybe i would hammer the point more on how focusing on social media hurts skill progress :P i think social media is a unique challenge to the beginners of today, along with defaulting to picture refs instead of irl refs; TLDR awesome vid, i'll keep recommending it to the beginners i interact with

I don't personally believe there is talent in way that ppl think there is. I think so called "talent" is just having right mindset to study, practice, learn and never give up. What ever its sports, art, music and so on there are some benefits gained from genes etc but most of it is always through hard work and will to suck it up no matter what and this is what I believe is difference between ppl. Some want to be artist but do not want to put the effort being one and blame talent and then there are ppl who go through the process and grind the levels to become good artists

I used to draw traditinaly but stopped drawing for about 6 years, then in 2019 i tried go back and bought a cheap tablet and i tell you, this transition is so damn hard, even worse when i am a begginner totally "out of shape".
We are ending 2022 and i still cannot get the handle of it.

I like to listen to younger people and their take on drawing and the how to of art. I don’t usually single out young or old, but sometimes someone older or younger can have a different perspective because of their freshness and new approach to the subject, or alternatively, perhaps because of their years of experience. I also think that no matter if your old or new to drawing, you can always and should always go back to the basics - don’t think that because you have learned all the basic skills, you don’t need this kind of video; don’t think you’re above the basics, or you won’t learn much or get better. As I get older, I know I have to go back to basics sometimes, like making an old recipe off by heart; sometimes it’s good to go back to the original source to see how much you’ve tweaked and changed it over time to suit your own style - perhaps a little too much in the wrong direction - and see why it’s not actually working like it used to. Thank you for your approach, your enthusiasm and knowledge. 🙂

For a drawing tablet I use the samsung galaxy tab 6 lite and drawing app Ibis paint X

I struggle so hard with drawing. I've been trying it on and off for 30 years and literal 3rd graders draw better than me. It's like my hands can't do a single thing my brain asks of them. I also struggle with the "no reference" meme. However, my biggest struggle right now is self hatred and embarrassment. I see what I draw and get SUUUPPEERRR discouraged. I'm glad I found this video! I doubt I'll ever be happy with my drawing ability, but this video helped me understand things a bit more. I am curious, though, how can I get better at 2d drawing? I like doing "symbolic" doodles, but they're always trash
Just work on smooth confident linework. Try to use as few lines as possible to draw something (this is called “line economy”). That’s the key to any good drawing, 2D or 3D
Question: How will I know, when I'm ready to move onto other things after doing some perspective? Like for example shapes and form, and after that gesture drawing.
Ideally you do perspective and form together, as you should be drawing forms *in perspective*.
But the answer is, whenever you feel ready to, you can move to the next fundamental. I would say try Value next - ill be making a video on that soon.
Also, I wanted to say this too, feel free to ignore my advice. My advice is merely a suggestion to help anyone who feels stuck. If you want to do gesture ahead of the curve, go for it.
I use ibis paint x but i only use it to trace my drawings
I'm having a really hard time learning perspective traditionally, because the books that I read teach the theorie (like perspective made easy, creative perspective, how to draw by Scott Robertson) but don't really show you haw to use the tools (for example how to use the correct degree ellipse tamplet for a car wheel )
Any advice ?
David Finch’s video on perspective is very good and makes it simple. But beyond that, you are right, a lot of books make perspective harder to learn than it needs to be. Perhaps I should make a video on this and simplify these ideas.
When it comes to ellipses, remember you just need an oval. That’s it. dont elongate anything, dont over complicate it - just draw a simple symmetrical oval, and modify it until it looks right. This is an art hack I learned a bit ago that tremendously helps.
A set of Lego or wooden bricks, mahjongg tiles or even food boxes and containers spaced out across a table or room gives a sense of perspective and a reference to copy. Table tennis balls, marbles or Jaffas achieve the same for spherical shapes.

Just dropping by to give some testimony of my experience: 3 years ago I started to take drawing seriously. I was working in a pretty demanding project at work, staying away from my home city and returning only for the weekends. I started to take art classes on Saturday morning and loved it, the instructor was good, the environment was relaxed and fun and etc.
Unfortunately I made the mistake of listening to the worst advice ever that I found on the Internet: "You must grind if you want to be good at art."
Me, wanting to be better at drawing, decided to take this as gospel. Even my instructor warned me (strongly!) against it at the time, only to fall on deaf ears.
So, I would return to the hotel after a tiresome day at work (from 7 AM to 6 PM!) and force myself to draw at least two hours and a half every day! Sometimes I would wake up at 4 AM just to complete the two hours!
And by drawing I mean: fundamentals. I wasn't "allowed" to draw anything for fun until I got "good" at the fundamentals.
Awesome right?! No. It really wasn't.
Yes, there was some improvement in the first weeks, but looking back, it was negligible in the great scheme of things. All it did was to burn me out completely. After 2 months doing it, I started to dread picking up the pencil. The idea of the frenetic practice at late night, like a mad man was just horror.
I stopped going to the art classes and then stopped drawing. Only on the second half of the last year I decided to pick the pencil again.
But I would do different this time: I would create a habit of it, but I would respect my limits. No more crazy grinding. I would at least draw for fun half of my time drawing. Surprise, surprise: I started to improve and drawing started to become a fun experience again.
To anyone listening: respect yourself. It is a journey, not a sprint.

Actually I was so Distracted because I wasn't know the right road to improve my art . I draw from really long long time and it was so random . Ok I improve but it really slow . By time I could make a better portraits but it need always to be better and has a lot of mistakes . The last time I felt that I really need a clear method to make things better and faster .
