  • Art fundamentals, art fundamentals. When working on our art, we hear this word all the time, but what does it actually mean? In this video, I talk about what SPECIFICALLY is fundamental to your art.

I'd also argue that there are the absolute art fundamentals, those which apply for pretty much any artwork that you do. I view these as basically 'if you think you're art never looks quite right, it's probably because you need to be better at one of these'. Beginners tend to start trying to get serious at art by over-complicating or drawing specific things. As such the absolute basics can get left behind.
    I'd list these as:
Line - drawing straight lines, curvy lines, jagged lines. Drawing lines consistently. Drawing clean lines without resorting to chicken scratches.
Shape - drawing squares, circles, triangles and other geometry. Sounds simple, but it's good for your hand to practise these as well.
Form - drawing cubes, cylinders and spheres, and then moving from your standard geometrical forms to irregular versions. These will be your building blocks to future artwork
Value - tone and gradients. Understanding how shadow and light works.
Colour - understand how colours work with each other, how they contrast with each other, how they reflect off each other
Space - Leads to composition, understand negative space, silhouettes. This will lead to cleaner, more striking visuals.
Perspective - 1st-3rd point perspective should at least be understood by every artist

All of these skills you listed are embedded into anything we draw. So, we should keep drawing constantly, and perhaps we draw on monday really thinking about lines, then on tuesday sorta ignore the line (leave on autopilot) and think hard about shape. Because I sorta think it's really good to keep drawing in context of a real drawing. It's similar to music, I feel that practicing concepts isolated from musical content is not very useful, it sorta gets lost. But to practice concepts by thinking about them while actually playing musical content, that is what really works.

I hate when people just say "learn the fundamentals." But that's really useless advice because it's such a broad term. Like tell me actually what I need to improve on, whether it's anatomy, shading, gestures, perspective, etc.

If people say that to you about your art, its usually because they dont have the hour to spend explaining all the issues they see in the piece, because there are so many.
When people draw entirely from imagination, esp as beginners, almost everything is an issue, because they lack the knowledge to imitate enough of the visual rules of the real world to make 3d illusions in the 2d medium that is our canvas.
Skipping steps and jumping to putting details on something that isn't solidly drawn through, painting something without accuracy or understanding, leads to so many, many, issues, that imo, its actually correct to say, learn the fundamentals, because it's the same as telling people to start from the 'actual' beginning of art education.
      There are no shortcuts.

Been practicing anatomy, perspective, and composition a good bit lately. I think another good thing to point out is that reading and observation are also super important for learning the fundamentals. And how a lot of the fundamentals interrelate and kinda help each other out. Like how learning perspective can help your anatomy, because you will know how to place things better in space, therefore making your figures more believable. Gives them more Structure as Bobby put it. And mirrors are my best friend! Great video Bobby, you can never stress how important the fundamentals are enough! Scary and boring as it may sound, it always pays off immediately in my art after having practiced them!

Yes, perspective is actually the number one fundamental in my book. You can't even draw a box without it. Perspective is the base of drawing and drawing the base of anything you do. Perspective is king. But of course is hardly enough. Proportion is the other one for me. I wonder if correct perspective plus correct proportion = sound structure.

    • @dahliarose1493
      @dahliarose1493 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@Drumaier I'll say that gesture will be the third important principle. Because no matter if the perspective or proportions are correct, no gesture means no feeling. Therefore, the drawing will feel stiff, in other words not as sound.

    • @dahliarose1493

Hi David, I'm not Bobby and I usually don't reply on youtube, but I thought I might since this is something I've been struggling with for years aswell. However hard it may be, nobody can really tell you which path to choose. I love everything too; watercolors, digital painting, character design, environment design, animation. It's taken me years to figure out what to focus on and it's still hard for me to just keep at one thing. But I finally decided to choose animation since it is less far within my reach to start a career with than the other subjects. Even though I have a long way to go and a lot to learn. I would say choose one thing you're probably the best at at the moment and work on that really hard. While you are learning to become skilled in this, you'll see chances to do the other stuff you love so much still after that. Nobody tells you that you won't be able to do that anymore once you're focusing on one subject. Another important part is whether you want to be an independent artist or working in a studio. Because some jobs can barely be done without other people involved, fe working on a film, or a game. Here's my thouhts on it. Hope you'll be able to make up your mind since being indecisive is taking up so much precious time, time you could be spending on becoming a skilled artist. Also taking your art in a direction that nobody else has done is one good way to go to stand out. So in that sense, I think specializing is always the best way to go. There'll be more time learning other stuff on the job anyway. If things don't work out and you'll be pulled in another direction, you'll notice that soon enough. I've yet to discover if animation is the path for me, or if I'll be doing something sompletely different than that but the point is, you'll always have regrets about something. In my opinion it's best to take a chance at one thing first, instead of regretting not having made a decision. Take care and be brave. Best of luck and happy holidays.

I'm not a professional, but I don't recommend doing them all at once. That will make you quit. Focus on one (if you are good more) for a week or two. Ex. If you notice your characters are stiff, look up gesture guides and dynamic poses. Don't copy the details , but the flow of their body into a few lines.
Basically, what problem matters more than focus on that

That's a key point. I sat in Art history class and had to tell the professor, how to present appealing a topic, colortheorie and basic plants in the picture, the course participants didn't look up. They don't know anything about drawing and judge in some type of elaborated scientific way, but don't know what they have infront of them. I do professional art for 16 years now and always think "Guys if you don't know colortheorie, then DON'T try to put meaning into meaningless colors/pure composition choices.

This video doesn't tell you squat. It's just an ad for schoolism. If you're going to do an ad, at least be honest enough to tell us it's an ad. For instance the title could have been "Learn art fundamentals with Schoolism" then if I'm curious enough about it, I will watch it any way.
