    I used a very similar setup with my Axe fx 2 a few years back.
    My "secret sauce" was to delay on side 15ms to create a hard panned guitar effect. The drives were in the "front mono" line, but had some modulation and different delays on the panned lines. So the effect was genuinely "2 guitarist like". During live shows the guitars out of the way of the vocals really allowed for a pristine and clean FOH mix.
    For solos I'd switch to a snapshot where the 15ms delay was turned off and had a wide but still centered solo tone with some added delay and reverb.
    I switched to a Helix (as I didn't want to drag the rack and midi footswitch) since then and you can almost replicate that - but you'll have to use legacy effects for the stomps, otherwise you run out of DSP power pretty quick.

    Cliff from Fractal Audio is a genius but a grumpy genius. He can come across as a bit rude at times, but like you say the Axe FX III is an amazing bit of kit. I use mine daily and in 3 years I haven't scratched the surface in terms of what it can do. The continual updates are great, so I recommend keeping an eye on the FAS forum as updates get posted on there.

    some really awesome sounds. I think that is a great way to approach the Axe FX - get the sounds out of it that work for you. It's easy to get lost in the options.

    The dual amp mode is great to get the right blend of highs and lows. Interesting fact EVH did this in the 70's. Not with amps but speakers. He used JBLs for that high thin treble sound and then GreenBacks for the main tone. One reason people could never replicate his tone.

  • @bob32069
    @bob32069 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I so totally agree with your perspective on "amp in the room" versus studio sound. I personally prefer the "finished" sound you get from monitors over the sound/feel of amp in the room.

    • @nedim_guitar
      @nedim_guitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I prefer the sound of the amp. A pretty loud amp, but with earplugs. That air that's being pushed in the room and the way the guitar can act with it, it's a great feeling! But I also suffer from option paralysis, so I shouldn't mess around with more than an amp or two and about 16 pedals (several utility and several dirt pedals).
      But during recoding, I need the amp not in the same room. I prefer monitoring, and I usually do that on headphones.

    • @stevedrake360
      @stevedrake360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nedim_guitar I totally respect your preference of a conventional amp. And there's no question, when you're standing in front of that amp, it has punch and air movement.
      One thing many amp lovers overlook, though, is that once that amp is mic'ed into a recording console, or in a live situation, mic'ed into a P.A., the listener doesn't hear the sound of an amp in the room. One of the things I like about modelers is that it gives the guitarist an opportunity to hear much more what a recorded amp sounds like or an amp sounds like live when it goes through a P.A.

    • @simonsimon325
      @simonsimon325 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always found myself trying to get rid of the boominess with amps in the room. Then finally realised the clarity I was trying to get was the sound of a miced amp.

    I could not care less about the amp in a room thing, I owned 4 tube amps before getting my AFX3 in 2018 and sold all of them: the Axe sounded much better through proper monitors at home, at any volume.

      Gratz! We don't need those overpriced crappy tube boxes!

    • @justinTime077
      @justinTime077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCyberMantis the overpriced ones you refer to are usually handmade with quality materials and use analog components to create a signature sound. Modelers use code to mimic what those very real analog components do. If you don’t value that, it’s fine, but it doesn’t mean you need to disrespect it.
      Imagine it as analogous to cars. One person might be fine with electric. It’s quiet, gets them from A to B. May they have optional fake noise they can blast out of speakers on the car to pretend it’s got traditional muscle, but we all know it doesn’t. Another person wants a gas Mustang. It’s making those sounds because that’s the nature of the components that are physically inside it. The owner can do their own work on it and maintenance. Modify it. Keep it running for years. It’s always the sum of its parts, and it’s never exactly obsolete.
      The modeler is the electric car. When a new one comes out that’s faster and claims to be better you have to buy it. A tube amp is always the real one. Nobody has to come out every year or two and convince you to buy the new one because it sounds more like a tube amp, and has less funky quirks.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinTime077 Is that why there is 1,000 different tube amps out there to buy? Because here comes a new one that sounds a tiny bit different than all the other ones that are out there. They also seem to generate a lot of heat. I guess they might help heat your room in the winter. Here comes a stupid tube shortage. Oooops. Now the parts cost more. Friedman just released a new Steve Stevens signature 100-watt tube amp. I'm sure it will be around $4,000. How many are you going to buy?

    • @wyckofury2198
      @wyckofury2198 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinTime077 I always had everything analog, built a stereo pedalboard. I’m a hobbyist only. Started recording with a DAW. Maybe it’s the DAW, but it didn’t sound great when I played it back. I then realized that I’m turning all that expensive analogue sounds into a digital signal. So I went full digital with Fractal. Keeping the digital equipment in the digital realm from beginning to end. The analogue world IMO sounds best when played live, unless recorded by a pro. And clearly I am not a pro.

    The dual amp chain aspect is what I had wished my FM3 did. But it just doesn't have the power. I was going to upgrade to the FM9, but I don't use it for anything but in the studio now. And I realized I didn't need it. Since I record multiple guitar tracks anyways and simply layer. The AXE FX III is a very nice unit though, and gives you a lot of processing power. For someone who needs a lot of different tones and high quality effects, it's an amazing option.

    I also am new to the Axe III. I always wanted one, but I just couldn’t resist the smokin deal for $1700 for a barely used original III. It came with an EV-2, and I scooped an EV-1 and a Thru Tone EX-ULT which is a boutique level TRS expression pedal made from a brand new Ernie Ball MVP full size pedal that has been upgraded in every way possible. It’s the best expression pedal that I’ve ever seen no question.
    Anyway, I am absolutely blown away with how freaking insane this box is. It sounds absolutely phenomenal, and the tone in your head exists inside without question. It responds to different pickups beautifully. And the effects are as good as anything ever. Just a monster piece of gear that is well worth digging deep into. Spend a month and really learn what’s what and take notes. Read the awesome manuals and watch TH-cam videos, all the work has already been done…spend the time to learn the operating system and how to listen like an engineer. I am liking it more every day.
    I got a 20th Anniversary JP6 Ernie Ball guitar with a boost and a piezo system that is on a separate signal path and the DiMarzio pickups in the middle position with the tone knob pushed out for the out of phase Strat sound, blended with the piezo is the best clean tone one could ask for. This thing rules!!!!
    I’ve been playing for 32 years and I feel like a kid who stole Christmas. If you’re a fan of Mesa Boogie tones, you’re gonna be a happy camper…there is like every Boogie inside, and they all sound fantastic.
    There is a bit of a learning curve though, it didn’t really start sounding incredible until a couple weeks ago. I was too busy being lazy and option paralyzed. After that wears off and you start really reeling it in….that’s when the real fun begins.
    WOW!!! It’s that good.

What is the implication of less but dynamic fx blocks in the gx 100? One thing I noticed moving from kemper to axe fx 3 is how bad the kemper is. 😢 had it for 9 years and thought it was pretty good. Now I’ve realised it doesn’t take pedals well at all. The bass frequencies are not good. The gain stricture reacts and seems be the same across any profile. The effects sound pretty bad. I’m having so much fun with the axe fx. It’s more usable all round. Way more authentic sounding.

      The axe fx was my first modeler and I found it quite straight forward to use. It's complicated if you want to get complicated is the best way to put it. Cause you can delve deep tweeking or you can go straight into a pre set or "scene" and get some of the best sounds you will ever get.

      Buy a used on on reverb today. Or wait. For recording, the QC has some nice hardware but lacks many effects. Ask in the forums to first make sure you by the unit that will suite your needs the best. I just got the nod and my new FM9 turbo is in the mail. Only took a year.

      @@MOAB-UT Did you actually pay for your FM9 in advance while on the list for a year? I ask because I am on the waiting list, but have not paid Fractal anything yet. @MOAB-UT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@uptownphotography No problem Phil. No. I did not pay upfront. That is not how the waitlist works. When you get notified, you get a link to where you can go and pay. If you wait too long, you will miss your spot. This has happened to others. There is a very limited supply and they are no where near through the thousands deep waitlist with limited supply. I heard it could be a year until non wait-listed people might be able to get one. That is why I suggested looking into a pre-owned standard FM9. Its the same thing less 11% DSP power (admittedly, that extra power is very nice to have.) It is far more powerful and gig able (9 foot switches) then the otherwise great sounding FM3. It is essentially a AFXIII in a convenient floor version. I would just jump into the QC and Fractal forums and make sure whichever one you buy will do what you need for recording. I think the QC has multiple recording options that might even be slightly cleaner. One performer said something like that a while back but I forgot all the details. For what I need, casual playing, mostly at home and limited recording, the FM9 Turbo should meet my needs for a long time.

      @@uptownphotography I do not already have one. It arrives today. I am happy to keep it but given the demand, I would part with it for the right price. Some people really want the Turbo model and don't mind paying to get one now. Mine will be in a sealed box so it does not get much better than that. You can view the listing right now on Reverb.
      I never had a really nice processor. I have a Katana Artist amp that sounds good but it's a big loud. I have a bad ear so a modeler works well. Have you tried any of the Neural DSP PI's?
      They sound excellent and I am sure they would record well. You would also save a ton of money- especially if you are not performing live or have a need for all the footswitches. I found that with about 3 PI from Neural, you can cover a very wide range of tones. I have two (2) Archetype Nolly and Corry Wong. Sometimes you can get a bundle deal. For under $300, you could be all set.

      The AxeFX III is two generations ahead, as of the forthcoming Version 21 Firmware update currently in beta. The FX II only went as far as Ares before the hardware couldn’t handle better algorithms. Cygnus was a HUGE upgrade from Ares and the new Cygnus X-2 engine in beta is amazing! I’ve been using it since the first public beta and the feel, responsiveness, and sound are just that much closer to real tube amps. It is seriously indistinguishable at this point.
      You won’t know just how much better it is until you play through one for yourself!

Authentic reproductions of the superlead, plexi and a couple other iconic amps and 4x12 cabs make me feel at home. I'm just really picky about how amps break-up and the decay of the notes ETC... I have been able to dial in detail to the point nobody can tell the differance... Being able to track quietly in the home studio through headphones with everything in one 3U rack is awesome.
