I was just reading Return of the King. Tolkien builds up to the big moments so well, that even though I know who Dermhelm is, I still get chills when she stands against the Witch King and is revealed as Éowyn.
Such a great character. I loved her much as i read the books, so many years ago... And though i don't like the movies, i fell in love again, with Miranda Otto being such a great choice for this role!
I've always found Eowyn a fascinating character in the books plus in the movies as well. One of my favorites. I always felt for her unrequited love for Aragorn. But she was a very brave shield maiden warrior in the battle of Pelennor Fields. She was definitely a more well rounded and interesting character in the books than Arwen was. Though I like Arwen she was still a pale imitation of her ancestor Luthien and hardly made an impact in the books. In the movies it was different of course. Anyways all hail Eowyn Shield Maiden of Rohan and Lady of Ithilien.
Eowyn was first conceived of as a wife for Aragorn, though that didn't last long in the writing. And she was always going to be the witch king's slayer. But she was a fully developed and a remarkable and fascinating character. Arwen, on the other hand was a last-minute addition, when the book was almost completed and Tolkein decided the king needed a queen. All the earlier mentions of Arwen were written in and there wasn't really time to develop her more fully. She didn't even exist earlier in Tolkein's mythology.
@@rachelport3723 Thanks for that info. I know a lot about Tolkien's works but I didn't know that his original conception would have had Eowyn becoming Aragorn's wife. Though there would have been the huge problem of Aragorn far out living Eowyn because he was a dunadan. He lived 210 years, so he would have died many decades after her death. Fascinating though.
Christopher Tolkein has collected and annotated his father's papers, and I have the books about LOTR - Return of the Shadow, Treason of Isengard, and War of the Ring. There is also Sauron Defeated for Book 6, which I have ordered but hasn't been delivered yet. It began from nothing and grew. @@rachelport3723 Very cool, a lot those books that were completed by Christopher have loads of info about this legendarium. I've several of them and others here and there. @@rachelport3723 Many thanks. Never realised that she and all the references to reuniting the splintered line of the half-elven was such a late addition. :)
You might be a bit off. Her journey into the valley of despair started before she met Aragorn, as she watched her “father” slip into dishonorable dotage. Read Gandalf’s words in the houses of healing. “Being born into the body of a woman with a spirit as high and valiant as Eomer her brother,” those were the words Gandalf used, insinuating that in all ways of courage, bravery and honor she was Eomer’s equal. She definitely claimed the most legendary PVP victory in the entire third age.
Thank you for making this vid about her, Eowyn is my most favorite fictional character and the way Tolkien honed her is just...complex in a beautiful way.
Peter Jackson's LoTR did not do justice to the eloquence of Eowyn's remarks to the Witch King at the Pelennor Fields. Her speech was one of courage and strength. That was one of my favorite moments in the books, and it was very disappointing to see what was done with it. Jackson portrayed her as fearful, boiling her iconic words down to "I will kill you if you touch him." Such a shame.
Since the quarantine I started playing lotro again. I just found this channel and I enjoy listening to your case studies related to the quests and regions I’m in. Really makes me appreciate the lore so much more.
I love that you have a sort of application of the story at the end. Eowyn could have been a very tragic figure, but through her own hero's journey she redeemed others and was redeemed.
Another beautiful video as always, a nice ending (or beginning) of the week before my summer class starts. Also, guess who’s engaging on their own little project with Tolkien’s work, to list the numerous crimes committed by the characters of Tolkien’s universe.
Thank you Peter! Actually, that video is already made! I speak to all of that in the Love Story of Faramir and Éowyn video! I hope it answers all of your questions, my friend!
Once again beautifully done. Éowyn is one of my favorite characters she is brave and fierce and the story of Faramir and Éowyn always touches my heart. Tolkien wrote their story so deftly. Two hearts healing each other. Only one correction Faramir and Éowyn did not marry in Edoras. They were trothplighted by Éomer. It is a medieval form of becoming engaged. Other than that slight niggle I loved this!
Yay! Thanks! I always felt that when her uncle didn’t want Eowyn to go into battle, but lead the people into Helms Deep, that he was doing the right thing. The people needed to be led to safety, and that is just, if not more important, than just doing battle. 🤷♀️. But heck yeah. Just like Nelson said👇. Absolutely.
My favorite LOTR character. I feel so identified with her for many reasons and events in my own life (no, doesn’t include slaying wraiths😂) Eowyn thought that only through great deeds she would feel fulfilled but she discovered that there is glory and joy in a life of compassion. She is truly an excellent model of the potential inside a woman’s heart. Thank you so much for this!!!
If I had a second daughter Eowyn was to be her middle name. Thank you for the fabulous telling of the life and courage of one of the true heroines of Middle Earth.
So grateful for pictures of Eowyn in which her arms are not too thin. She trained with sword and shield. Her arms should show it. I like the warrior's hands, too. Thanks for an image that will overlay the frail delicate maiden of the films.
I read the chapter of Eowyn's healing last night and it kind of made me angry. Nobody could see her hopelessness until it was far too late. Gandalf rebukes Eomer lightly saying he had his glory, his fields, his horses, not seeing that Eowyn did all she could to keep Theoden's spirits up, even then she felt like life was a cage closing and shrinking around her. Then Aragon repeatedly tells her to stay out of the battle because she was a woman. When waking, she admits that she might be healthy but she has no hope. As one who has fought depression, I know what it is like to feel no hope in the world. It is a hideous thing. People only see her killing the Witch-King but nobody sees her hopelessness.
Well not really. Getting married doesn't make a woman any less "powerful". My mom is a "feminist" not them feminazis. And she's had kids and a family and all that for over 16 years. In truth if more female characters WERE like her and less sexist then we'd all be happy
@Joe Appleby She is though. Feminism isn't about saying one life choice is better than another, but that the woman can decide for herself what she wants to do in life. Eowyn did that.
@@olivialim7541 A truth! Thank you! Eowyn already had a career as a shieldmaiden, winning a place among warriors of renown, doing what no man could have done. It’s no comedown to become a Healer after such deeds. Health & long life to her. And, for that matter, to you.
As incredible as these stories are, there is always much sadness involved. The Death and Destruction throughout middle-earth mind boggling...You really get the feel that tolkien went thru during WW1 because of this....The courage of men and women ,though they despair at times(including some exceptional Hobbits) really shows that even in the Darkest Hour, they can prevail.......but oh the cost of such victories can make even the coldest of heart and the stoutest of men weep with sadness. I truly enjoy your series and hop you think about doing longer segments that would weave together events that would be skipped over from the movies and include the background that puts these events into chronological order.
Tolkien leaves nothing out, he weaves into his world, all the various archetypes, and roles which show the complex interplay, of male, and female, and shows us that the least likely outcome, is many times the vital part, and glory of the story. All things play out, as they should, and that which is seemingly beyond all hope, becomes the only hope, and the best hope.
Who watched the 'One ZOOM to rule them all' Reunion, hosted by Josh Gad? I was just thinking a bit about Eowyn after seeing that and then up came this video!
"Sometimes a Hobbit and a spark of courage are all it takes to change the world". THIS is the truth that Gandalf found when he came to the aid of the Shire Folk during the Long Winter. "You have to put a Hobbit in a very tight place before you find out what they're made of". And the Warden of the Houses of Healing: "They are a remarkable race. Very tough in the fibre, I deem", after Aragorn told him that Merry would be fit and able to rise the very next day after the horror he endured.
Lovely video. Well done. I'd still like to suggest a video on healing in middle earth. Answering questions of Athelas, Elrond, Gandolph, the King Elesar and so forth. Thanx.

Excellent work on this video. I would like to suggest something maybe a bit different for a future video of yours. Maybe you could look at music that has been inspired by Tolkien? Bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blind Guardian, Wind Rose and many others have drawn inspiration from Tolkien's work and it might be cool to take a look at? I am not sure how you would go about it but it's just a thought.
There were a Wizard, a Dwarf and three Elves present at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. And yet Tolkien chose to give the honor of destroying the mighty Witch-King of Angmar to a 25-6 year old girl from one of the "lesser" races of men, who was also going through suicidal depression. As somebody who has struggled with depression and anxiety in the past, this is something I personally love.
Eowyn's description in Appendix A of LOTR says she inherited her tallness and grace from her grandmother Morwen, whom the Rohirrimed named "Steelsheen". From all accounts, Morwen was of High Numenorean descent, so Eowyn was taller than most women of Rohan, and brought the dignity of Numenor into the bloodline of Rohan. Faramir did indeed wed a woman of the High Race of Numenor. The Blood of the Kings of Men does not dwindle as fast as people think. Their children, I suppose probably lived in vigour to past their hundredth year. Certainly, the Rohirrim live in vigour to an average of over 80 years old. But in Faramir and Eowyn's children and grandchildren, I'm betting that once again, the Golden hair of the race of Hador returned. As it did occasionally in the Kings of Numenor. For example, Tar-Aldarion was golden haired.
Barahir, grandson of Eowyn and Faramir, writing the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen I think implies he was also their grandchild. Meaning the son of Eowyn and Faramir likely married one of the daughters of Aragorn and Arwen.
Love Eowyn, she truly is Tolkien's best written-female character and one of the most spectacular characters of all times. Honestly, she might just be my favourite Tolkien character of all times.
But about Arwen - Elrond didn't even have a daughter until Aragorn needed a wife. :)
@@rachelport3723 Very cool, a lot those books that were completed by Christopher have loads of info about this legendarium. I've several of them and others here and there. Very interesting about Arwen. So Tolkien created Eowyn before Arwen. Her character was written well before he even conceived of Arwen. Good to know thanks.
@@rachelport3723
Many thanks.
Damn last time I was this early Anakin still had all four limbs
and Frodo had all of his fingers.
And Smeagol and Deagol were still fishing.
Now this is why I always take the high ground...
And Sauron was still called mairon
But not the high ground!
;)
The slaying of the Witch King in Jackson's trilogy was one of high points of the film. Thanks for sharing.👍:):):)
One of my first women idols as a kid
Thank you for making this vid about her, Eowyn is my most favorite fictional character and the way Tolkien honed her is just...complex in a beautiful way.
Another amazing video Yoysten! Éowyn was definitely bad ass.
Miranda Otto, beautiful and perfect for the role.
Your videos never fail to instill a sense of calm within me thank you. :)
My favorite quote from the movie comes from Eowyn..... her response to “What you do fear my lady?”
❤️my girl! Had a vanity plate for years SHLDMDN. Best plates I ever saw shadowfx on a truck pulling horses and rohirrim on a mustang lol
I love that you have a sort of application of the story at the end. Eowyn could have been a very tragic figure, but through her own hero's journey she redeemed others and was redeemed.
Wwoowww!!...
I think this is the most intimately/realistic depiction of a person in a fable!..
Much much much appreciated!!...
Finally, this longtime fan gets HER character history. I've been waiting for this one. Thank you.
Ty for the always great content, Eowyn is def a fav character of mine she is totally underestimated
Another beautiful video as always, a nice ending (or beginning) of the week before my summer class starts.
Also, guess who’s engaging on their own little project with Tolkien’s work, to list the numerous crimes committed by the characters of Tolkien’s universe.
Hey Paul A! Thank you, my friend! Ah that is awesome!
let's take this moment to appreciate all the awesome fan art shown in the video.
I’ve been waiting for this one! Thank you so much, Yoystan! You’re the best!
Thank you so much! I’ve wanted to hear more on Eowyn
Love your site!! So well done!!
Any possibility of some compendium concerning Eowyn and Faramirs family and life after their union?
Thank you Peter! Actually, that video is already made! I speak to all of that in the Love Story of Faramir and Éowyn video! I hope it answers all of your questions, my friend!
@@MenoftheWest I'll find it! Thanks!!
Eowyn is one of my favorite characters in Tolkien's stories.
I felt the relationship between Aragon and Eowyn slowly developing. Instead, I see him with Arwen who isn't in any way special.
Love this! We named our daughter Éowyn ..
I am watching this because my girlfriend is named after Eowyn
Yay!
Absolutely love the artwork !!
Yes, Tolkien knew how to paint his epic characters on their path. Great video Yoysten!
If I had a second daughter Eowyn was to be her middle name. Thank you for the fabulous telling of the life and courage of one of the true heroines of Middle Earth.
I wonder how the witch king feels to die to a 24 year old because of some elf prophecy
probably something like “thank eru i’m finally dead and not a puppet anymore”
My favourite character in both the books and movies. Beautiful and courages.
Eowyn is one of my favorite charakters in the books.
What a joy your videos are - the perfect tonic, no matter how brief, in today's world.
Excellent job on this video my man! Loved it~!
The scene of the witch king and theodin dying is the most emotional part of the book for me.
Well done! Thank you for the accuracy! I've seen the movies too many times and need to re-read all the books again!😁❤🧙♂️🍻
So grateful for pictures of Eowyn in which her arms are not too thin. She trained with sword and shield. Her arms should show it. I like the warrior's hands, too. Thanks for an image that will overlay the frail delicate maiden of the films.
I can't stop thinking about "Lover of horses"
Thanks for the great content! Hope you’re staying safe!
If every female character was written like Éowyn or using her as an example when being created, no female character would ever be hated.
Well not really. Getting married doesn't make a woman any less "powerful".
My mom is a "feminist" not them feminazis. And she's had kids and a family and all that for over 16 years.
In truth if more female characters WERE like her and less sexist then we'd all be happy
@Joe Appleby Exactly.
@Frank Castle Yeah I agree. As people say "some people love yo watch the world burn" people just like being miserable and making others suffer
Brilliantly done. Thanks for another smash hit! ♤
Tolkien leaves nothing out, he weaves into his world, all the various archetypes, and roles which show the complex interplay, of male, and female, and shows us that the least likely
outcome, is many times the vital part, and glory of the story. All things play out, as they should, and that which is seemingly beyond all hope, becomes the only hope, and the best hope.
Hey Yoysten. You should play divide and conquer. It's a fairly lore friendly total war game. Keep up the good work
Yoystan will surely find a woman like Éowyn, such strength, such power. A woman to compliment his very splendor and glory.
Who watched the 'One ZOOM to rule them all' Reunion, hosted by Josh Gad? I was just thinking a bit about Eowyn after seeing that and then up came this video!
It was magical! Wish they just rerenacted the whole movie lol.
Last words of the Witch King of Angmar:
"Eyy... You... Win..."
LOL
One of my favorite stories in the larger work.
Such a great Character.
Lovely video. Well done. I'd still like to suggest a video on healing in middle earth. Answering questions of Athelas, Elrond, Gandolph, the King Elesar and so forth. Thanx.
My Chicken Eowyn was a fighter and I think that's why she hates cages...Because she is a hen in a coop!!!
Ooo, A Valar Wrestling Match...Who Would Ever Win, *Tulkas* That is a Mystery, I really want to Know!!! *It's Tulkas*
Thanks, Mellon for Talking about Eowyn, *(Who was 24YO and is 2nd or 3rd Fav Gal in Tolkien)*
Until an ECH on Your Boy Tulkas...Marion Baggins Out!!!
P.s I wondered if you will ever do an ECH on Tulkas and soon, you will!!!
Tinuviel, a chicken named Eowyn, you are truly a gem with many facets. Lol. I hope all is well in your world. Be safe.
@@gobigblue6782 Thank you, Mellon!!!
Last time I was this early, Isildur was fighting at Dagorlad.
Thank you for not making me look up Eomer’s age lol
This video made me cry so much, damn
I love Eowyn with all my heart, thank you for giving her story the thoughtful insight she deserves. ❤️
Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was the least I could do for this awesome heroine!
Yep...not enough powerful women in Tolkien's world.
The thing folks miss is she healed Faramir and Faramir healed her. Both having been broken for their fathers.
@Joe Appleby sarcasm much?
I see you saw this Yoystan...is it worth a video about Eowyn and Faramir? A love story based in death...that ended in life.
Enjoy!: th-cam.com/video/V0uNwiHQDZQ/w-d-xo.html
I named my daughter Eowyn 10 years old, and her younger brother, Eomer 3 years old....
Outstanding!
Love this channel!
Thank you for this. I enjoyed this one too.
A very extremely great video as always Men of the West.
Ah, Eowyn, the shieldmaiden. Slayer of the Witch King, definitely dead.
The Witch King disliked this video.
And Sauron....
...along with 3 of the Nazgul

The Diva! I love Eowyn. I love her fight in the animated Return of the King film from ages ago. A
Cool video I love the elf sword from lord of the rings movie
There were a Wizard, a Dwarf and three Elves present at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. And yet Tolkien chose to give the honor of destroying the mighty Witch-King of Angmar to a 25-6 year old girl from one of the "lesser" races of men, who was also going through suicidal depression. As somebody who has struggled with depression and anxiety in the past, this is something I personally love.
"Begone foul dwimmerliak, lord of carrion!"
I was so disappointed she didn't say that in the movie.
One of the most BA lines from LOTR movies, "I am no man."
Love Eowyn, she truly is Tolkien's best written-female character and one of the most spectacular characters of all times. Honestly, she might just be my favourite Tolkien character of all times. Thanks for this video can't believe it escaped my notice hitherto this moment.
Oh and.... 24 years old!!!!!!!!!?????? Holy mac, yeah don't mess with Eowyn!
you failed to take the opportunity to name the channel “Lore of the rings”
Damn Yoystan another banger keep up the good work my man
And I thought that you will make special video about "Get together" meeting of LOTR cast from yesterday :) I really liked that video.
