OMG! My first living wall, 36 pockets, is up and running! So far I have planted radish, basil and cilantro, with beets, watercress, Asian greens and lettuce to follow as they grow large enough to transfer into the wall. I started with a few plants from the “living herbs” section of the grocery store since they are only $3 instead of $8 at the nursery. I wanted to make sure they would survive the 80 - 105 and higher temperatures that have been plaguing me out here in California’s Bay Area. Since it is dryer here than where you are in Florida, I used bubbler type emitters open wide for a fast water flow on each section. The drip types like what you are using were drying out way too fast and plants were wilting. Further, I have to leave the pump on 24-7 to ensure a moist overnight for the plants. Evening temps can remain as high as 80 so they were drying out overnight. I added another little refinement which is to prevent me from having to dig around each pocket to empty, wash and restore clay pebbles after each planting. I fill 5x7 mesh jewelry bags with the clay pebbles, pop the plants in and stuff the bags into the pockets. This allows me to quickly and efficiently retrieve the pebbles all at once by lifting out the mesh bags. Also, it allows me to quickly change the location of a particular plant by lifting out the bag containing all the pebbles and the plant for the location change if, for example, a particular plant is crowding a neighboring plant. So far, this system is totally changing my summer gardening by eliminating the loss of greens due to scorching heat. I put up a small shade to help with this. I will henceforth save most all of my dirt gardening for cooler times of the year - if EVER! This is so much easier! And I LOVE the variety. It is not only changing my gardening, but also my cooking, diet, health and gardening satisfaction. Thank you so much for sharing this priceless gift. ❤️😄🥳. PS. Have you tried strawberries? Mine in dirt are frying just like the greens did.

AWESOME! Thx so much for sharing all your experiences and experiments. I’m right behind you but starting slowly so as not to get overwhelmed. I am currently a bit frustrated due to excessive heat out here in the Bay Area of California. Significantly over 80 every day, sometimes as high as 100 in my yard so many things frying, dying, not producing, etc. Not to even mention significant wind which whips and thrashes taller greens, vines, etc. I’m going to slowly transition to microgreens and forget trying to outwit the weather. Thanks again. Your laid back attitude and methods are a tremendous inspiration! ❤️❤️❤️

I love this. I've always liked the living wall thing and have been thinking how to incorporate one. I was thinking just with jars - kind of like a spice rack, but this is even better. I'm going to be building an outdoor kitchen so this would be perfect to have on one side to easily grab herbs and stuff for cooking. wonder if you could get one with bigger pockets to do bigger plants like peppers and cherry tomatoes.

Love the idea, thinking how to adapt it for the extreme summer heat, storms, high winds and 0° freezes we now deal with in Texas in recent years. Basically a 100° temp range over a year. Keeping everything adequately watered in very hot weather is a big factor.

Some of my wonderings from the video: How long do you intend for your greens to live in the wall? Is this to keep them fresher rather than harvesting and putting in fridge?
Also wondering if direct sowing into walk would be beneficial, or is transplanting the way to go?
Love this new experiment as I've wanted a living wall for over a year now. Not sure why i never considered hydroponics. 😂
Thanks for sharing all that you do!

    • @KeepOnGrowin

Thank you. Yes, once harvested and put in the fridge, they stop growing. Putting them in the wall, they continue to grow, increasing my yields. We will be experimenting with direct sowing after the first few harvest.

Maybe you can make an update video in about a month or two addressing the algae issues 🤔? Im curious to know how visible it will be on that black material. I suspect it will build up in that channel but that looks easily wiped out. And im curious to know if moss will adhere to that material? That would absorb any algae issues! Can you try that for me and your viewers? I look forward to your update video in a month! I already know it will do good thru the heat. Id like to put rows of these in my back yard back to back, to help cool my auqaponics garden. But they would have to be on a separate hydo system if they produce as much algae as i suspect they would.
