When I was in my teens there was a novelty record came out, called "They're Coming to Take Me Away!" The B-side was just the A-side with the recording played backwards. It fascinated me, and I took it upon myself to learn to recite the backwards vocal. I had a neat little 2-tack reel-to-reel tape recorder my grandmother had bought me. I'd discovered you could play tapes backwards by threading the tape through the playback heads upside-down. (This was around the time of "Revolver", by the Beatles, so I was right up with the play!) Sure enough, when I played back my recording of myself backwards, I was transported to the Red Room, 20-or-so years between the airing of the show and the atomic test that set the whole thing in motion. I knew the artist's son. He used to play guitar (incredibly well) in Washington Square Park. That song blew the engineers of the day away.
