Nixon de-funded the Apollo program in the early 70s. If USA had continued Apollo-Saturn for say another 10 years, a moon base by 1980 would have happened. Shuttle system was technically flawed and way over budget for 30 years. If the Shuttle program had never happened USA would probably have an advanced moon base by 1990 and Mars landings possible in 2000. Sorry Shuttle fans - biggest mistake in the history of manned space flight.
@@FandersonUfo Actually, shuttle was supposed to fly about once a month. The economies of scale would have made it cost less per pound to orbit; more like a commercial airliner in performance-per-dollar. They were under pressure to scale it up quickly, and that's a lot of why Challenger happened. Then they went *over-the-top* on safety, and buggered up the schedule. It caused problems in other places, too: Galileo's main antenna never opened (it had spent too long in storage, waiting for a ride.) It also caused the Air Force to work on having its own shuttle ("Blue Shuttle," it was called in development,) which drew from finite resources. The biggest mistake in manned space flight was either Congress killing the last Apollo flights, or NASA's choice of VentureStar (which squandered $330M ona vehicle that never flew) over the RLV. Lots of people at NASA were scratching their heads at that, but hey, it LOOKS sexier, and it uses a state-of-the-art aerospike! But it never flew. Thanks, Lockheed. This show from the '70s predicted that by 1980 people in England would be driving on the right side of the road and that wigs would be a very important part of women's fashion. Those distinctive wigs worn by those on Moonbase were intended to prevent the buildup of static electricity.
My guess is that the left-hand-drive cars were a number of concept-vehicles shipped from the USA, & along with the slightly posh accents, the series was being pitched very hard to be aired on American TV! The irony of those purple wigs is that it's impossible to wear wigs in space, & would be next to impossible to keep them on in the moon's very low gravity!
Set far in the future - 1980 Odd that UFOs always seem to pass by the moon on their way to the earth; since thats the first line of defense, youd think theyd come in from the other side, or not even in the ecliptic at all. Of course since they only had 3 space torpedoes, and those had the marksmanship skills of a Stormtrooper, maybe it wasnt worth worrying about.
To be fair, one source I found years ago stated that the blast yield of each missile/torpedo was in the 100Mt range ... Putting that in perspective, the largest nuclear weapon detonated was the (in)famous Tsar Bomba. Was designed to be 100Mt, using a fission-fusion-fission reaction chain, but the weapons scientists got a bit nervous, so replaced the last fission stage with the equivalent mass in lead. Even so, the best estimate is that the blast yield equivalent was 50-57Mt, easily twice the size of the largest American test of Bikini Bravo, which 'ran away' producing in excess of 25Mt, and creating a huge radioactive mess of the Pacific ... So, going back, you don't really need decent aim, when 300Mt is going up within, say, 5 miles of each other ... even with atomic density being a magnitude, or so, less, than the upper stratosphere, such a massive detonation still ought to have a significant impact. Straker was impressed by Lt Ellis' professionalism and intelligence. She is a very able and capable SHADO officer. If Ellis were male no one would question Straker's suggestion that she make a point of meeting him again on Earth. It would almost be sexist of Straker to not compliment her in that way in front of the other staff when he leaves moon base. In any organization the commander should develop close working relationships with their key people for the organization to function well. The fact that the woman is also "a very attractive girl" is not what motivates Straker in my view.
What a travesty! Alan Freeman in the pilot's seat, and the intrepid pilot of Thunderbird One (Shane Rimmer, voice talent for Scott Tracy on Thunderbirds) as co-pilot.
Was it ever explained why when they went to the moon their hair became purple? Not complaining just wondering if we have that to look forward to with all our females. If so can we hurry up and get the moon base built
Gerry Andersons wife was a budding fashion designer and theorized that in the future wigs would be a part of uniforms in the same way caps are now. Sadly she was wrong but that is why they hd wigs. No idea why purple though
Mr. Pomfrett thank you. I spend most of my time answering questions about the wigs. I think there was a Japanese film which did purple wigs on the moon several years before UFO not sure if there is any connection.

OH.... sand UFO's could hide in clouds... apparently, it never dawned on anyone that radar can be used to find a hiding UFO in clouds...
SUPER !
Never heard of this movie , but the girls with the purple hair were ahead of the times.
TENENTE ELLIS SUPER SEXI❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯💯💯🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹SUPER SUPER GABRIELLE
I Wonder if Her "Carpet" matches her "Drapes" !!! Lol Say No More Squire !!! Lol
They all had Carpets back then !!! : P
I'd vacuum that carpet all day long
WoW...
Unisex changing rooms NICE!!!
Do you think that Straker had the hots for Lt. Ellis?
Straker was impressed by Lt Ellis' professionalism and intelligence. She is a very able and capable SHADO officer. If Ellis were male no one would question Straker's suggestion that she make a point of meeting him again on Earth. It would almost be sexist of Straker to not compliment her in that way in front of the other staff when he leaves moon base. In any organization the commander should develop close working relationships with their key people for the organization to function well. The fact that the woman is also "a very attractive girl" is not what motivates Straker in my view.
@@FandersonUfo
Personally, I would make her a Captain ... she was too smart to just stay as a Lt. ...
... but that is just me ...
I know 70% of the male population of the UK did.
What a travesty! Alan Freeman in the pilot's seat, and the intrepid pilot of Thunderbird One (Shane Rimmer, voice talent for Scott Tracy on Thunderbirds) as co-pilot.
Many familiar faces from 2001, and later seen in 1999.
GOOD STUFF!
The year of the Drake.
"between drools"???? She is 76 years old now.... OMG!
She was 26 then - in addition a large segment of my audience is in their 70's now.
@@FandersonUfo It was worse for me, I started puberty watching her... I'll be 60 soon. :(
@@MrKiwi1960 - already 60 - I'm a 1959 - it's desperately boring to deal with that birthday I must say
Thanks. for the info.... So can I get assigned to SHADO and stationed on the moon?
It is possible i would think. Though not sure. There seemed to be a lot of crossover between Japan SF and Anderson Sf
The wigs were supposed to be anti static to prevent accidental sparks which might cause explosions in the oxygen rich space modules
Wow
Very cute gal...
This was back when aliens were welcome whether legal or not. If they all looked like Lt. Ellis, there could never be enough of them!
My guess is that the left-hand-drive cars were a number of concept-vehicles shipped from the USA, & along with the slightly posh accents, the series was being pitched very hard to be aired on American TV!
The irony of those purple wigs is that it's impossible to wear wigs in space, & would be next to impossible to keep them on in the moon's very low gravity!
actually the idea was that UK would switch to left hand drive before 1980 - never really happened obviously
From your comment, you appear to be completely oblivious to the various methods by which wigs can be attached firmly to the wearer's head - they don't just sit there you ignorant clown.

Never knew Ellis and Bradley were intimate
My fist ever crush at 9 years old!
Quite a storyline for an actress in 1970. Talented and beautiful lady.
William H. Baird well you could have done a great deal worse.😸 You chose just fine.
23:25 Is that Yoda sleeping against a rock in the foreground?
muy buena serie inglesa los efectos qué utilizaban los modelos la ambientación no le pide nada a lo actual
In all the times I've watched this series, I could never figure out the Violet colored hair the women wear.
before Apollo 11 landed there were mistaken ideas such as excess static electricity on the moon - the purple anti-static wigs would keep women's longer hair from frizzing out and under control was the idea - 🛸
Maintain Tracking indeed
This series is incredible.

My gf wore this outfit for Halloween like 4 years ago god Gabe was such a babe ❤😊
This show helped get me through a very rough puberty!
it's too bad it wasn't done in widescreen. This still look amazing.
it does look like 4:3 full frame 35mm original negatives. Lots to crop to get to 16:9
@@FandersonUfo I don't want it cropped. I was saying it would be cool if it was filmed in a wide format.
@@TygerBlueEyes - I totally get what you mean - it is just a fact that this original footage is pretty much locked in to SD 4by3 ratio - I would love to see a new version filmed by 8k red cameras - not holding my breath though
@@FandersonUfo I would love to see a remake. But, we the track record of the latest remake I don't have high hope for a great remake.
@@TygerBlueEyes - Almost impossible to do in 2019 now - the style of the show is fantastic, cat suits, wigs and dodgy looking models look so good together - Hollywood would ruin it with post modern realism and political correctness - I would allow the Japanese a shot on a remake before Hollywood - they understand the show
What a babe she was ❤❤❤😊

aichanha Ay - What is your opinion of the purple wigs? Many of my viewers are confused by the purple wigs on moon base. I think they are great.
beufuful
1:12:30 She's got her game face on. Less makeup too. Rather good in this shot.
Wow... Memory lane indeed, I wonder how many of us old boomers got a rise out of that scene 3:28. I remember seeing it back when it was first broadcast...
No PC agenda in sight , yes we'd have all just stood there and watched Lt Ellis get her kit off the same way as that pilot did and not blinked an eye..🧐.. because it was natural, beautiful and complimentary...
Can you imagine the modern WOKE, inclusive and SJW idiots making such fine programs now days ?
They'd have us watch a remake where Straker and Alec share a flat over a flower shop and Lt Ellis was applying for gender reassignment. 🥴
The world turned into crap by our own hand, we didn't need the Aliens to do it for us. 👽
You would think the aliens would wait for the moon base to go below the horizon or use the earth to hide behind.
the relationship with the aliens got fairly hostile aspects,it lacks a bit of love and empathy
hmm.. is there a difference between Leftenant and Lieutenant ?
@Bill Whittaker thanks
lol, they were pretty hamfisted pushing their DEI right off the bat.
the Thunderbirds had better acting and I vaguely remember watching this when I was a kid
Some of the same voice actors from Thunderbirds appear here as well. Perhaps they were better voice actors than film performers. Have a nice evening sir.
Give the kid back their toys
Imagine if lycra/spandex was around in 1970.
Who did the voice for S I D?
Maria Kelly - bbc newsreader - Neil Oxley
Lt. Ellis & Mark had a relationship
So that's why we never returned to the 🌕: your hair turns purple. The horror!
