    1:11 - the greatest punt ever, based on situation. 80+ yards, bombed it over the return man, minimal roll to pad the length of the punt, and dead at the 2.

      true story. I met him at Camp Atterbury Indiana. He visited us troops there and watched our combatives training. I put him in an arm bar. Coolest man ever. Very personable

      Dude probably could have been the GOAT punter if he weren't the great QB he was.

      The best QB/P to play in the NFCE was the great Danny White & his 3 straight NFCCG appearances as starting QB & 600 Punts. 20+k yards passing & 25+k yards punting. Dude gets lost in the shuffle of history even had 500 yards rushing

      Mike Scifres in the 2007 playoff against the Colts proves this point. He punted six times. Colts' starting positions after his punts were the 10, 19, 3, 7, 9, and 1 yard lines.

    I watched the Steve O'Neal NY Jets punt back in the day live (on B&W TV) in 1969. Last year of the AFL, which I loved and loved the Joe Namath Jets even more. First time to see that punt in color!!

      Steve O'Neal had an interesting style of kicking style, he was stepping into the ball during the snap so he only had a single step before he punted.

    1:11 is one of the best punts I've ever seen. I've watched almost every best punt compilation on TH-cam because I'm weird and enjoy punting lol but ive never seen this clip!
    80 yards through the air, rolled just enough to get the return man not to pick it up, and stopped DEAD a yard and a half before the end zone.
    Perfect punt.

      I don't think you're crazy. I'm one of the few people who would punt on 4th down in Madden or NCAA because hitting a coffin corner inside the 5 is more satisfying to me than actually scoring a touchdown lol

      Based on what I saw it was the longest distance in the air of any of these shown. The bounce on the ground has a large element of luck and can be prevented by the returner catching the ball. But you can't stop 80 yards in the air.

    I was at the "Bluegrass Miracle" game between LSU and Kentucky in 2002 in which LSU won on a 74-yard hail Mary. Early on in that game, LSU punter Donnie Jones hit an 86-yard punt, which was the longest I've ever seen in person. Jones went on to play about 15 years in the NFL.

    Remember that punts are measured from the line of scrimmage even though punters are usually ~12 yards or so behind it.

    These punts included the “roll” after it his the ground which I know is included with the total yardage.
    A term rarely heard anymore in NFL broadcasts is “hang time” which used to be a metric used to measure how good a punter was. The higher and longer a punter could keep the football airborne determined whether or not the defenders could reach the punt receiver before he caught it.
    Ray Guy, Reggie Roby two of the best at hang time. I’m sure more of the older folk will give more names to add to the list of two I’ve given.

    I remember 1 punt in the Pro Bowl where the AFC punter (I think he was a former rugby player from another country) boomed a punt from his own end zone to the other end zone I'm amazed that that isn't the only time it's been done. Good video!

    2004, Washington State at Arizona. Kyle Basler (WSU) literally boots it from his own endzone to the other for a touchdback. Biggest punt ever.

    i saw Ray Guy punt from end zone to end zone when he played with Southern Mississippi against Ole Miss. Bill Malouf was the return guy. It hit over his head and bounced two or three times before going into and through the endzone. I think 1972 but not certain.Awesome.

    The punt by Steve O'Neal of the Jets was 98 yards and I believe it's still an NFL record. This was in 1969 vs the Denver Broncos.

      1 to 1 is still 98 yards. Since you're allowed to punt all the way up to the line of scrimmage, it's not measured how far behind it you kick from.

    I was attending WVU when Todd Sauerbrun kicked that 90+ yard punt. He also had a 71 yarder in the same game. Only highlights of the kickoff classic which saw a lopsided drubbing of the Mountaineers at the hands of the defending national champion Cornhuskers.

    The 2 best consistent long punt kickers I've ever seen are #1 Ray Guy with the Raiders, #2 Rick Roby with with the Oilers, I'm 58 & those are the 2 best I've ever seen

    02:52 I saw that on TV. From the one yard line to the one yard line, 98 yards. I always thought the returner accidently kicked it until I finally got to see it again years ago on TH-cam.

    The team at my high school had a great left-footed punter who was also the star right-handed quarterback.
    He was naturally left-handed but his father had trained him from preschool to be a quarterback and forced him to play "correctly".

    As I understand it, Phil Braga, Sr., kicking for Cal in the '20s, sent the longest punt up to that time and that kick lasted as the longest for decades afterward.

    Not a punt really. But when I was in high school our punter(Dan Henke) had an 80yd punt on a free kick after a safety. About 50yds in the air and rolled the last 30 for a touchback.

    A big reason for these punts going so far is the coverage getting down field quick enough to where the returners not getting a good chance to catch the ball so its able to bounce a good chunk of hte way afterwards.

    Was a punter up to college. Usually, you get close to a sweet spot. With practice, you can get a routine solid kick. But every now and then, maybe 1:10: you’ll find that one place on the ball that sends the air though the ball perfectly. You know as soon as you kick. Immediately that that was a monster.

    The greatest/most clutch game ever by a punter was chargers vs colts 2008 wild card. Mike Scifres was unbelievable!

    On my freshmen football team on our first game, our QB’s first game punt ever was a 50 yarder. I think thats pretty impressive tbh.

    They forgot about Southern University’s Matt Bushart’s punt in a 1996 game at Northwestern Louisiana. 85 yards with no bounce. That’s all air yards. Hang time of at least 6 seconds. Everyone was in awe. . .

    I witnessed the longest punt in NFL history. It happened in 1969 in a game between the Jets and Broncos at Mile High Stadium. 98 yards by Steve Oneal at 2:52.

      They really don’t, and it’s unfortunate. Kickers and punters both play crucial roles in a football game, but everyone cares more about quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, etc. Special teams players are people too

    That longest punt was kicked 5 yds deep in the Jet endzone and was picked up by a Bronco at like the 1/2 yard line! Though it probably went down as a 97 or 98 yrd punt (the 2 as the line of scrimmage)... it was actually 104 - 105 yrd punt!

    Some of these are just incredible! I witnessed in person Marv Bateman crush a 78 yard punt in the air and caught by Billy white shoes Johnson in Buffalo. There was a good wind at Batemans back which helped quite a bit but he really did get all of it.

    Funny enough, I went to Highschool with Johnny Hekker. He once punted the ball straight up in the air during a game lol Now he plays for the Rams. Hilarious. Happy that he is one of the best now :)

    There was a time where the Raiders weren’t very good, but due to their kicker, Janikowski, and punter, Lechler, they were never really getting blown out because field position was generally in their favor. They could have had some great draft picks if they didn’t have those two

    First time I have ever seen the actual footage from the legendary 98 yard punt from his own Jet 1 yard line and picked up at the Browns 1 yard line. I wanna say the game was at Shea Stadium in 1973 or 1974 without cheating and using Google.
