@@cubiversewastaken I've put an order in for a car. Too much waiting these days. But in the meantime I am watching all these video multiple times so I can keep these in mind when I start driving. I think to avoid panic it works well for me if I just get used to plenty of driving at 1st and 2nd gears. Plenty of stopping and starting and practice on empty roads. Rapid starts and smooth and harsh breaking etc... do it all before you have to do it on live roads.
@@mcuembedded Yeah, if you’ll stick to slow-speed stuff you should be fine. I’ve driven since I was like 12 (Not everyday, on holidays mostly) so, I know most of it. Just gotta learn to be more “smooth” in gear changes. I’d say, if I would be you, I’d put lots and lots of time on gear changes and proper clutch control. It’ll make your driving feel more “cool” and not so “panicky” if you know what I mean. After learning to change gears and properly using the clutch, focus on parking BACKWARDS and PARALLEL parking. TRUST ME, if you master both of these, you’ll be more skilled than half the drivers currently out there driving. It might seem hard, but after you learn how to do it properly, you’ll probably start doing it more than normal (forward facing) parking because, let’s agree on this one, it’s more satisfying parking backwards into a space between two cars than it is doing it the “normal” way. Just my opinion tho! I am just a normal dude on the internet, when you get your car is when you realise what you need to improve on! Anyways, this is getting quite long, stay safe!

Hello Richard, leaving this comment here in the faint hope that you will read it. I just wanted to give you a big shout out and big thanks for your invaluable channel. At the age of 41, I decided last year to finally embark on getting my drivers license. Now nine months later I had my second drivers exam this morning, and passed it with flying colours! :) First time around it was sheer nerves that got the better of me, and completely misjudging a situation quite early on in the drive that got my already rattled nerves even more rattled. Your channel has been extremely helpful, and were just the right supplemental tools I needed to gain the confidence and know how to master the art of driving. You have a great way of laying out the challenges at hand, present them in an understandable manner and offer different scenarios and/or pros and cons for whatever the topic is. I am sure I will come back to rewatch some of your videos for some of the stuff I still can improve on, and will continue to subscribe. Again a big thanks for your time and effort, much much appreciated - cheers! :)
Thanks for all these videos. I think I changed my driving style from watching your content, and now have just passed my driving test first time today. I remember judging the width of my car and how to steer were my first TH-cam videos I watched from your channel, and now it's just instinct.
I wish I could have you around me for 7-10 days while I drive my manual car! Hope you can make a video on eradicating fear for someone who intends to get back to driving after collisions or accidents. Thank you for your work!
I passed my test in November and had a ford fiesta until a week ago . I got myself a Suzuki Vitara as it was my dream to have a bigger car . There is not much of a difference driving a bigger car but I was a little anxious for few days . Watching videos like this is definitely helpful .
Finally I passed my driving on Tues. Was my 5th attempt. Thank you so much for these videos. I watched them constantly for 3 days and I learnt so much from them. Good luck everyone waiting for their test.
I use the mirrors initially to find pointers on the car as to where i am positioned. So for example, using a straight road and the mirror I figured out that if I align a particular piece of the wiperblade to the road line, I know I am about 20cm away from it, which Is very helpful for tight parking or passing tight spaces. Of course you need to find that spot on every car you drive and also every time someone adjusts the seat. It's not something I rely on, but I think it is a great technique to be able to put the car exactly where you want to
I'd like to say thank you for your videos. Passed my driving test today and your videos have been super helpful and have taught me so much. Will recommend you to anyone who's learning to drive. Thank you!

I think the advice to check your wing mirrors for positioning helps if you just do it once in a while as a sort of double check process. Eventually the brain starts to position in lanes and tight spaces somewhat automatically. On a recent drive along two lane roads my husband felt I was too close to the centre line but a quick check with the wing mirrors told me I was pretty much dead centre. We both found this interesting and reassuring.
This is just what I needed today, another conquer driving video. Thank you for creating this entertaining and informative content! :) greetings from Germany. 👻 “you’re looking at the past”. True and scary!
I'm trying to pick up driving after haven't been driven for 5 years. I'm so grateful to find your videos on youtube and watch it almost on a daily basis. My problem is parking. I'm just wondering if you can produce any videos that help me to drive safely in multi-storey shopping centres? In addition, more videos on parking pls! Thanks a lot!
What I find helps me judge the width of a car I drive for the first time, is when I slowly drive over a bumpy road, it give's me a "feel" of the width of the tires.
While I definitely agree that staring in your mirrors too much while driving forwards is a bad idea, something that really helped me stay central when I first started practising in my mum's car were quick glances in both wing mirrors. She told me that I was too far to the right of my lane and at first I couldn't tell or understand how to tell, but quick glances in the wing mirrors made me realise. The centre line to the right looked closer than the kerb to the left. Then I kept my eyes on the road ahead, feeling more comfortable knowing that I had room to the left to move into. I felt a bit stuck before, glued to the same position within my lane because I felt scared of going too far left or right, but simply glancing made me realise how much bigger the lane was than I thought. Also, afterwards I was too far left in my instructor's car and I did the same thing to fix it. I'm pretty sure my instructor's car is wider because I feel further right than I actually am.
When going forward in a new car I do use the mirrors when in a straight line to tweak being central in the lane, as show at 2:46. However it doesn't take long before you get used to the new car and spatial awareness becomes second nature.
I did that too for the first couple of months of driving, but since then I now know how to place myself (my car) perfectly between the lanes just by looking ahead.
I would like to agree to disagree. I agree with most of what u say but left orvm will definitely help me in understanding the distance that I have from the left side of my car to n the end of the road. That helps me with a measurement on how far I can push you the left. Obviously for the right side, I can see straight. 👍🏻
I've said this in a previous video I believe. But I think clarification is needed. Using mirrors to check if you are centered in your lane is a great way to confirm your position, it helps boost confidence, but only IF you are a new driver and you aren't sure and only going straight and not when on a busy road. Although I think you can check A mirror on a curve, the one closest to the steering wheel, because it is a quick glance. Using them to judge your width when going forward is a bit silly lol.
Could you do a video on driving in really, really busy town centres at night? Or just night time driving in general? I was driving in one, picking up a friend, at night. I got so blind sided by poor driving from everyone, I got really shaken by the whole experience. It’s like town centres at night have a different set of rules. There’s random stops from Uber drivers in front of a green traffic lights/double yellows. Drunk pedestrians walking onto the road without looking. Cars without lights on so it’s a massive shock when you come across them at night. Driving at night is also like a totally different experience compared to driving during the day. There is more danger involved and inability to see far ahead. I enjoy it more because it’s peaceful. But it would be really good if you could make a video about how to drive at night safely.
Your brain coordinates your arms and legs, that's why it is important - always look the solution - the direction forward where you are going to go..especially at bends :). If you stare at the mirrors you will steer the car toward that direction where the mirror is, and that is quite dangerous..
You can't judge the car width from dashboard using mirror when driving ahead, I normally use wiper knob in Prius plus and it's absolutely works fine to judge how far I'm from the curve from right side
Thanks Richard for your brilliant videos i am learning alot from your videos and even my instructor noticed so, i think its all physiological so i am working on my confidence when behind the wheels . Just one thing about positioning the car, i keep drifting when driving as i am afraid i am gona hit the vurb or the parked cars or the oncoming cars so any tips? Ill check your other videos :) many thanks .. Best regards Rua
Please make a video on going through a very tight space like between two stationary or slow moving cars which are inches away from our car. & one more question- If I stop my car inches away on the left side of a road with curb or wall just about to touch it then if I take a right turn at full steering lock to right side (not needed just curious) then cars back side can touch or not the curb or wall at left side? BTW I appreciate your efforts very much cause here in India, we also drive left & your videos are a boon for a beginner like me. It really made me a safe driver. Have you came here, just asking?
@@ConquerDriving Thanks for quick reply. I was just rewatching your videos on pulling over near the curbs. & You've provided another link 😁 Very clever of you😂 (just joking) Your content is helping a lot specially in countries like India where almost every 2nd person learns driving from his elders & even gets driving licence without many hassles. Your videos will make those better & probably safer drivers on the road. Kudos to you🙏
I'm confused, what would be the answer to the original question to judging your width when driving forward? the method of keeping your left leg in the middle lane?
For me the problem is knowing/judging not the distance from the car sides to the walls, but the distance from the wing/side mirrors to the walls. Because they obviously don't appear in the mirrors' images.
If you're close enough to an object to worry about your wing mirror connecting with it, you should be super slow and that will allow you to actually look at the clearance between your wing mirror and the object.
Hi, got a question about the convexity of mirrors. In my country, learners are being taught to only use the wing mirrors most of the time, whether you're changing lane, turning, reversing, parking... I came up with a theory I'd like you to verify, because I am no driving teacher. I think that countries with the warning legend on wing mirrors might just be countries where roads are wider, so instructors may teach there to set the wing mirrors wide ,so you can't see your car in them and then it is probably a problem to judge if you can change direction or not, because you got no reference point - the car. But if you got a snippet of car in your wing mirror, then you got a reference point and I do not see a problem when for example, deciding if you can change lanes or not.
I don't know how instructors in other countries teach pupils to set the mirrors. You are right that seeing a little bit of your car helps you reference where another object is in relation to the car you are driving. The interior mirror is best for judging distance which is why I recommend using the interior mirror and wing mirrors together.
Hi, can you please make a video on how to turn right from q junction when theres cars coming from the left and right. When theres some what heavy traffic, I can find a right time to go. Thanks
Hi Richard. Please I need your help. I am learning to drive, my driving exam is in 2 months. But! I have 2 problems, when I have to turn left at the end of the road, I take the turn to wide, scared I will hit the curb. And second, when I drive, I drive to much on the right, I am scared I will hit the curb or parked cars. Can you help with a reference point while looking in front of me? Would really appreciate 🙏🏻🙏🏻 thank you
Could you maybe make a video about reversing and judging your distance. My car doesn’t have parking sensors and I find it hard to judge the distance between me and a car behind me sometimes
Richard, I'm curious what you think of the difference in the Irish test marking schema compared to the UK one. It is broken up into 3 types of faults and there are sections relating to aspects of driving.
@@ConquerDriving Basically it is broken into sections e.g observations, speed, signals etc. For each one there is Grade 1, 2 and 3. If you get any Grade 3 faults, you fail. If you get 4 x Grade 2 faults on a section, it turns into a Grade 3 and you fail. Same if you get recurring Grade 1 faults, it could turn into a Grade 2. I guess the difference is you are limited to how many minor faults you can get on one aspect. Whereas in the UK you can get 15 regardless of what aspect of driving they are in.
Richard please help me. I don't know what's to do 😔 I had already 42hrs lessons. But before every single lessons I'm full of stress. stress paralyzes me. I can't concentrate on driving. I thought to give up but I need that license. how can i deal with the stress ?. what can I do ? 😔
I'm sorry to hear that, maybe this video will help th-cam.com/video/YMOieAQ_n_c/w-d-xo.html Overall, take your time, don't rush for anyone, not yourself, not your instructor and not for other road users. Accept you will slow people down when learning and even when you have a licence. There is no need to stress about this, you have to accept it.
You are very mistaken. Mirros are good for judging the width of your car. Do not look into the mirrors. Look at the mirror. Mirror is the extension of your car. If you are going forward, then look for a second, how far is your mirror from the object. If your mirror is going to touch it then you are to close to this site. This is how you do it 😊
They are not "wing mirrors" , they are "door mirrors", or right or left mirrors or nearside or offside mirrors, attached either to to the "A" Pillar or the front door. Way out of date information. Wing mirrors were originally located on the front wings of cars in the 50s, 60s and 70s (the portion of the body above the wheel well). Just saying... I don't know much about driving...really...!
Not up here where I live, I've been teaching driving since the mid 80s and I can only recall a couple of incidents when people referred to them as "wing" mirrors. It's maybe a geographic thing.
This is so wrong. If you need to do some delicate manuevers, move your mirrors so you can easily see the side of you car. However, when going down the road, your mirrors should always be set up to SAE specifications. It eliminates blindspots(which dont really exist in passenger vehicles. People are just retarded) and keep people safer on the highway. Do NOT set your mirrors up like this guy has them.
Lmao 🤣, I knew how to judge the width a car since I was 15, its easy as cake how can it be impossible not to be able to judge the width of the car while your driving?
My instructor has taught me nothing in fact hes told me to keep cheeking my side mirrors whilst im going forwards to see if im straight thank you for making videos like this xx

Driving at night is also like a totally different experience compared to driving during the day. There is more danger involved and inability to see far ahead. I enjoy it more because it’s peaceful. But it would be really good if you could make a video about how to drive at night safely.
He's posted two driving at night videos

Part 2: th-cam.com/video/LrgZEmm31OQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for linking those video for Faye.
Best regards

Thank You Sir,
You are Great 👍
To see the sides in the mirrors for a learn maybe it's ok; however, this enlarge the blind spots.
Thanks, God bless you

🙏❤️🙏 👨🏻🎓 Your video is excellent helpful my dear 👍🏽 👍🏽 👏👏👏💕
thank you
Please make a video on going through a very tight space like between two stationary or slow moving cars which are inches away from our car.
& one more question-
If I stop my car inches away on the left side of a road with curb or wall just about to touch it then if I take a right turn at full steering lock to right side (not needed just curious) then cars back side can touch or not the curb or wall at left side?
BTW I appreciate your efforts very much cause here in India, we also drive left & your videos are a boon for a beginner like me.
It really made me a safe driver.
Have you came here, just asking?
The rear overhang could touch the kerb but the rear wheel won't. This video may help th-cam.com/video/tIo8Cv7lY0c/w-d-xo.html
@@ConquerDriving Thanks for quick reply. I was just rewatching your videos on pulling over near the curbs.
& You've provided another link 😁
Very clever of you😂 (just joking)
Your content is helping a lot specially in countries like India where almost every 2nd person learns driving from his elders & even gets driving licence without many hassles.
Your videos will make those better & probably safer drivers on the road.
Kudos to you🙏
Very helpful thanks
omg thank you for this 😭😭💜
I'm confused, what would be the answer to the original question to judging your width when driving forward? the method of keeping your left leg in the middle lane?
That is my advice, here is a video: th-cam.com/video/tIo8Cv7lY0c/w-d-xo.html
Thanks
I'm always scared of hitting the curb when turning at a junction. Would wing mirrors help with that?
You are the great man ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing 🤩
For me the problem is knowing/judging not the distance from the car sides to the walls, but the distance from the wing/side mirrors to the walls. Because they obviously don't appear in the mirrors' images.
If you're close enough to an object to worry about your wing mirror connecting with it, you should be super slow and that will allow you to actually look at the clearance between your wing mirror and the object.
thank u
Thanks
I'm sorry, but I don't know what a Q junction is.
Hi do you have any videos about slip roads?

I don't know anything about the Irish driving test.
When I pull in to park on my left, I can be too wide
Richard please help me. I don't know what's to do 😔 I had already 42hrs lessons. But before every single lessons I'm full of stress.
stress paralyzes me. I can't concentrate on driving. I thought to give up but I need that license. how can i deal with the stress ?. what can I do ? 😔
I'm sorry to hear that, maybe this video will help th-cam.com/video/YMOieAQ_n_c/w-d-xo.html
Overall, take your time, don't rush for anyone, not yourself, not your instructor and not for other road users. Accept you will slow people down when learning and even when you have a licence. There is no need to stress about this, you have to accept it.
nice. I see my student use this method as well I won't recommend as well, also use this method at night is useless 🤣
Can I have tinted windows when sitting the test in my own car they are at a legal limit ?
If your car is legal then it should be fine.
🙏🙏
use side camera or even better 360 camera ✌
You are very mistaken.
Mirros are good for judging the width of your car.
Do not look into the mirrors.
Look at the mirror.
Mirror is the extension of your car.
If you are going forward, then look for a second, how far is your mirror from the object.
If your mirror is going to touch it then you are to close to this site.
This is how you do it 😊

Btw I learn so much about driving from your videos thanks
They are not "wing mirrors" , they are "door mirrors", or right or left mirrors or nearside or offside mirrors, attached either to to the "A" Pillar or the front door. Way out of date information. Wing mirrors were originally located on the front wings of cars in the 50s, 60s and 70s (the portion of the body above the wheel well). Just saying... I don't know much about driving...really...!
That's true, but most people still call them wing mirrors.
Not up here where I live, I've been teaching driving since the mid 80s and I can only recall a couple of incidents when people referred to them as "wing" mirrors. It's maybe a geographic thing.
Just play chicken 🐔
This is so wrong. If you need to do some delicate manuevers, move your mirrors so you can easily see the side of you car. However, when going down the road, your mirrors should always be set up to SAE specifications. It eliminates blindspots(which dont really exist in passenger vehicles. People are just retarded) and keep people safer on the highway. Do NOT set your mirrors up like this guy has them.
Lmao 🤣, I knew how to judge the width a car since I was 15, its easy as cake how can it be impossible not to be able to judge the width of the car while your driving?
Wow you’re amazing
Ok
How have you been judging cars' widths since you were 15 when you're 11 years old?
Why click on the video of you already know 😂
