Even though Nikon can benefits from an acquisition of RED by expanding it reach into cinema cameras, Canon and RED were never really direct competitors. At least not the way Sony and Canon competes camera for camera.

Every one is missing the real reason for this deal, the patents. In the world of big business no one pays to license a patent, instead they trade access to each others patents. Right now Sony has the most important patent, that for dual layer photo diodes which increase sensor sensitivity by a full stop and reduces noise. Canon just patented three layer stacked sensors hoping to do a trade, Nikon now has the Red patents, which are arguably more important, for the same reason.

Hey Simon, look at that, the high end Nikon cameras suddenly support RF mount 😛
As I mailed you this morning, this is indeed a very impressive move from Nikon !!
It remains to be seen how RED's mighty global shutter sensor can be made cheaper when produced at larger scales .. a Z9ii with such sensor could be awesome, but no one would buy it for over 20k$.
All of a sudden, it makes much less senses for Nikon to release a Zh with the a9iii sensor .. 🤔

Mr Drummond, RED Digital Cinema has cameras at and under $10K that will do everything an “ordinary filmmaker” would need to accomplish their work/goals for making incredible images, why are you creating this $30K-$50K straw man argument for cameras that are obviously meant for the top end/union made/professional market?

Btw, I was pushing for Jarred to sell to Fujinon Films but their relationship with Sony kind of killed that idea… But I’ve known that RED was streamlining their company to sell for the past 6-7 years, if you were close to the company/their core employees who built the company from scratch, you knew something was on the horizon. I’m just glad that they didn’t sell to one of these black hole private equity firms for max profits.

Nikon dropped a Nuclear Bomb on the camera industry with this announcement. They will make their money up in royalty fees from Canon, Sony, Fuji. Nikon has shown they are here to play!!! If I were going to buy in the red price space, I would go with the Sony Burono, 8k, image stabilization and autofocus.
I’m happy for Nikon as it will make for heavy completion in the market and Nikon can now develop their own sensors for both video and stills. I personally think when the lawsuit was over Nikon had already told Red that they were buying them. That deal got done too soon, but I love how they both kept it quiet.

  • @BobN54

'Dynamic range' isn't what you think it is. It doesn't tell you anything much about 'low light performance', and it's highly unlikely that the RED sensor's DR, normalised in the same way, is any more than the A9 III's DR. I can't see any clear statements from RED about the protocols that their 'DR' claims are based on. The normalisation and limits chosen can make a huge difference to DR figures, and you'd have to know that comparable measurements were being used before declaring that one was better than another. RED sensors are designed by Forza Silicon and fabricated at a foundry, likely ST. Neither is likely to have any special magic sauce that Sony doesn't. Neither is either likely to be able to do better than Nikon's own sensor development team, which is very capable. Also, the sensors that RED uses are unlikely to be proced at a level allowing use in Nikon cameras. That said, there is a lot of obvious synergy between RED and Nikon - just not that.

@@bngr_bngr You may be right. I haven't shot with a Canon since my old A-1 back in the 70'-80's but the AF on my Z9 works superbly well for me and what I shoot (motorsports). Additionally, there is more to a camera system than AF. Much more. And while I can't really speak to the Canon mirrorless bodies, I know the Sonys feel like children's toys in my hands and don't inspire the same feeling of quality that Nikon does. Nikons also appear to be built more ruggedly than Canons. I know 2 colleagues who have dropped their 1DX's and had issues. I dropped my D4, D5, D6 many times ad thy just kept on ticking. Thant's important for a working professional. I also shoot dog agility events and have heard colleagues comment about their cameras having issues focusing under certain conditions. I've encountered the same conditions and have had no issues. With over 750k "actuations" on my Z9, I think I've had a little more experience with it than some dude with a fro. ;-)

Few corporate pairings make less sense than Nikon/Red. I suspect this will be an epic corporate culture nightmare behind the scenes. I also expect we will see an engineering defection from Red which Nikon will not have the talent pool or capacity to replace. Plus Red is a sitting duck now in the cine space. The salespeople must be livid (and shopping around their resumes as I write this). The whole thing has the makings of another OM-Systems mess before the end of the decade. Would be nice to be wrong about this, but having watched a lot of mergers and having led a few, it’s hard to hold onto talent when a big bureaucratic organization attempts to take hold of policy and procedures. We will see.
