    Keep in mind, Gale wants to make sure Katniss has a winning mentality. Peeta is a 16 year old who KNOWS he’s going to die because there’s no way he’d choose to survive over Katniss. Of course he’s crying. Although, the love story angle was Peeta’s strategy to make Katniss more likeable to the vapid Capitol audience. Just because he wasn’t all testosterone-fueled killer, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t working to protect the protagonist.

    Cato being given a moment of humanity and sympathy at the end is so important and I think it's something in the film adds that really enriches the story.
    Step back from the thrill ride of a good drama, and let yourself remember that every single child there, including all of the "careers", were victims. The girl that Thresh killed who seemed like a psychopath--she was 14 or 15. Cato was what, 17?
    Collins does a great job of making some of them vicious and hateable, which is great for a story, but Cato's history is just as devastating as Katniss's. He was indoctrinated to be a child soldier his entire life, given a lie that this would glorify and give meaning to his life, and then when he gets there and he commits the atrocities he's been primed to commit... He's faced with the brutal realization that he never had a chance. Someone else was more skilled. And now he's going to die meaninglessly, a tribute like all the rest, his flesh fed to mutations while the capital cheers.
    It's a dark book.

      I agree that Cato needed that moment but wish it had been done like in the book, he mouths "Help me" doesn't he when he's being eaten? I feel like that moment is more real about how the careers feel about the Capitol. Most are loyal to the very end, so in the book it's that one moment but it felt rushed in the movie. The capitol in the book is SAVAGE and ruthless - i didnt feel that with the movie.

    Kato realizing that he was a walking corpse who only serves as entertainment for the Capital at the end is pretty perfect. Not sure why giving voice to that realization makes him a b**ch. Also the ridiculousness of hating either Gale or Peta has always been insane to me. They're just kids in a totalitarian state that like a girl and struggle to survive. One wants to fight. The other has to fight. And they both show how they feel about Katniss throughout that madness the best they can. Confusion, chaos, and occasional selfishness is all understandable. The only thing more ridiculous than hating either of them is folks that criticize Katniss for getting close with both and struggling to decide. She's a kid that is so tormented that she can't even come close to figuring out how she feels. That's even more realistic.🤷😂

    We ARE in Katniss's head for the Reaping - or at least, for part of it. Showing Prim tuck in her duck tail is 100% Katniss-O-Vision. We're seeing all the things that Katniss is taking in while she's in shock the same way she is - in little pieces. Prim's braids, her mom's apathy, the untucked shirt, etc. It's not telling us what Katniss is thinking, but it's making us FEEL what Katniss is feeling.

  • @CJ77777
    @CJ77777 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +81

    Yeah, there's a lot of misunderstanding about Peeta here. And while Peeta is one of my favourites in the series, I say this because contextually it should be pretty obvious. Everything he did was to save Katniss and not himself. If you look at his actions from start to finish they are always to either help Katniss, whether it's training separately from Katniss to make a plan with Haymitch followed by revealing his secret (what would be the reason to do that other than to make her more likeable), talking her skills up, joining the careers when he already has a target on his back, fighting off Cato to protect Katniss and almost getting mortally wounded, not even attempting to kill Katniss at the end even though they were in close range and he could have easily grabbed her and killed her (straight away he tosses his weapon aside and, like you said, unravels his tourniquet to speed up the process). He does a lot for her in the book but as we see scenes from Katniss' perspective, and she is also confused about his motives, you have to look at his journey overall.
    As far as your love for Gale, Gale is a nice guy but he's literally in 1 (briefly 2) chapters. He's a stand-up guy looking out for his family and Katniss' but we don't see any more than that. I do tend to find a lot of male reactors really love Gale in the beginning tho.
    On a completely different topic, the reason they pull the bodies out is not because of the mutts (although they can use them if they want to) they always pull them out due to [a] previous tribute resorting to cannibalism. 😧

    Gale was actually a really decent guy, he doesn’t deserve the hate he gets…but Peeta is the 🐐he was willing to give up everything for Katniss, he was so good and kind hearted when he really had no reason to be. Peeta was crying after the reaping because he knew 100% that he was going to die, he knew he would die so Katniss could have a chance to live. He stopped training with her as part of his strategy, he humiliated himself by confessing his long time crush on her in front of the country, he teamed up with the careers which must have been terrifying, squared off with Cato to save Katniss, was left slowly dying by a stream with nothing so Haymitch could give Katniss any sponsor gifts they may have got, he pulled the tourniquet off to bleed to death so Katniss would live. He also never once pressured Katniss or required her to return his feelings unlike Gale…he was hurt and embarrassed after he found out it was all a lie, but he sucked it up and dealt with it alone.

    About Peeta- His skill is charm. He can’t fight or hunt, but he can charm people. Katniss is unlikable. We the reader like her because we are in her mind, but from the outside she is an unsociable, taciturn psycho.
    Peeta is her balance. He charms Haymitch into helping Katniss, the capitol into rooting for her (the romantic relationship), and the other tributes into not immediately killing her. Katniss barely notices because she’s in her own world, but while she keeps them alive in the arena, Peeta keeps them alive outside it. I do wish the movies had portrayed that dynamic better.

      I think whether 1st person or 3rd person is better/worse is subjective. But, if they made it 3rd person and just like cut all the scenes Katniss wasn't there in, the movie is WAYYYY worse. Committing to that and showing other perspectives outside the arena was the best possible decision to make there

    Just wait on your thoughts about gale. Also, Peeta trained separately because he already resigned himself to die because katniss had the better odds and he cared about her. And the movie had haymitch say “I can sell a love story” to imply that from the book- they could get more sponsors which would increases katniss’s survival chances. He was willing to die for katniss. Because if she died, so would her family. I recommend a second reading at some point to really analyze it. First read through, at least for me, I’m just there for the ride. Second read through things will pop out more.
    What grinds my gears is that the mayors daughter was the one who gave katniss the mocking jay pin in the book. My theory is that she was going to volunteer initially to be the “mocking jay”. But in the book, katniss responded to volunteer very quickly that the other girl couldn’t. This will make more sense when you finish the series. I get why they left it out. It’s not really important, but it adds another layer to the story.

    Cato said that at the end because after clove died he made the realization that they too were victims of the games and the capital. District 1 trains these kids to win. He came in completely believing that the odds were in his favor and that there was no chance of him losing and it was a romanticized thing for him. His rose-colored glasses were broken and he realized he wasn't better than any of the other kids there.

    The main deviation I’ve always thought about is how in the books Katniss is so aware she’s on camera and tries to be basically stoic and not look scarred. Also how she works with Haymich though their weird system and knows what he wants to see in order to get gifts. She was smarter but it would have too hard to show those internal things on film.

    Peeta doesn't ask to be trained separately because he thinks Katniss is a threat, that's just what Katniss believes. Peeta asks to be trained on his own because he has feelings for her, doesn't think he has a chance of winning and doesn't think he deserves to win, feels unlovable/unworthy etc so he's like I'm gonna give her better odds . And he and Haymitch plot to use his feelings for her to give Katniss the advantage.

  • @HRLastro
    @HRLastro 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    As much as I love Peeta, the people in the comment section needs to chill. I like it when people root for Gale in the first movie because technically he didn't do anything bad to prompt that much hate in the first movie. He is legit a "love interest" for her and we are getting her perspective. A person who's watching or reading the HG for the first time is definitely not going to catch up with everything and it's okay.
    If someone new is going on the journey of the hunger games, let them make their own opinion characters without constantly warning them about what's going to happen in the future. It takes away from the experience of the books and movies. It's like spoiling the whole character arc to them even before it started.

    I was honestly team gale the first book too until he turned into a lil woe is me asshole. He holds Peeta and Katniss’ relationship as a betrayal the entire time when they were literally in survival mode.
    It pisses me off that nobody listens to Katniss even after she vocalizes that she can’t even think about romantics, that she just needs to do what it takes to keep her family safe. She is so disconnected from her feelings (which is portrayed so well in the books), has intense flashbacks, nightmares and strong reactions to things as a result of the games and Gale never tries to understand.
    Meanwhile Peeta wakes up in the middle of the night to comfort her, is constantly working behind the scenes, many times at his own expense, to better her chances. It was so dangerous of him to team up with the careers. But he had to stay close to them to draw them away from Katniss, knowing they’d target her after her 12 score in training.
    I just wish they showed more of Peeta’s strengths besides his charm. He had to have skill to stay alive before Katniss found him. The careers brought him in because they saw his strength in training. And he was way smarter than he let on.
    Anyways this series is so fun, id do anything to experience the books for the first time again!! Pls make the next one longer, I’d love to hear alllll your thoughts!

  • @misslizz88
    @misslizz88 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Ngl it took me a long time to stop being team Gale. Remember that many major plot points hinge on keeping Katniss in the dark. Because Haymich recognizes that her strength is thinking on her feet. Katniss has good instincts. And part of why is because she was influenced by Gale. Her way of thinking was majorly influenced by Gale. She's not willing to give the Capitol anything. And she does see Peeta as weak for sacrificing himself for her sake. She cannot understand someone who barely knows her to go to the lengths Katniss did for Primrose. Katniss found worth in breaking rules. When we learn more about Peeta we learn that its not as easy for him to be a rule breaker and Katniss has a false idea of how well the merchant class of people are in her own district. She falls for the Capitols propaganda despite everything.
    Honestly it never felt right how Katniss was never given the full narrative from the beginning. It felt really icky taking away her agency to decide things for herself even if her decisions may be considered too spicy to let her survive. It's a catch 22. #TeamKatniss

    Love seeing a new reader’s perspective on the movies! I read the books so long ago and I’ve seen the movies so many times that I feel like I glaze over a lot of the things that were changed.
    Loved that you mentioned taking the bodies out! I was also surprised when they didn’t show the body removal because I remember that part so vividly from the books. I remember her talking about how they had to start doing that so starving tributes wouldn’t resort to cannibalism and It was so casually horrifying that it really stayed in my mind. I guess there was no real way to express that in the movie without explicitly saying it? But at least in the case of the mutts, I think a quick scene of the capital receiving their bodies could’ve been done to at least imply the mutts were the tributes. They don’t even try explain it at all.
    Same with the three-finger-salute and I really feel the movie missed here. It’s such an important symbol and the book talks so much about the meaning in district twelve and then growth into a symbol of the rebellion. Anyone who didn’t read the books would never have the same understanding of what that symbol means.
    Generally I really like the movies though and I’m glad you’re enjoying the Hunger Games so much!

    Bruh, Cato just killed most people in the arena. He is not yet 18 years old I'm guessing. He is a broken young man. And, in his final moments, he finally realised that the Games are not supposed to be "won." No-one ever wins the Games. He realises that his entire life dream of being in the Games and running glory for his family is just a carrot that was dangled in their faces but it all ends in murder, crisis, brokenness, great 6, PTSD, and living in mental hell for the rest of your life even if you win.
    Cut him some slack at the end there.

    I saw the movies first, then read the books and I'm also a person who is real big on movies following books. (Harry Potter and Game of Thrones made me so mad I didn't even finish watching them) So I love ur inputs about the books. Personally, I think the books are better. And idk why everyone hates Gale. Gale isn't bad. Peta gave more for katniss, and gave without regard to himself from day one. Gale had the advantage of having an actual relationship (friends) with her before and knew her better. And the two in the books represented the internal struggle for katniss. Rebellion or conformity. Being fueled by anger or embracing kindness/love. Neither of them are bad people. Just different. I love Gale. I actually like Gale more than I like peta. Katniss kept having to save peta and he was slow, loud, and just altogether more of a liability for katniss through the whole series. Gale was self sufficient and loyal and would have been (and later proved to be) a much better help practically speaking.

    No! It wasn’t her dad. If it was her dad the riot wouldn’t have happened because her dad would know that should he act disorderly he would be risking the lives of his other children and his wife. Remember how the peacekeepers execute a little boy named Martin because he kept a pair of night shade goggles? If they murder people for such minor offenses like that in district 11, no such riot would have happened out of fear of mass murder of the population, only to use said mass murder as an example to those who survive it. My personal head canon is that this scene never happened.

    8:00 they dont pull the bodies out JUST to make mutts. I distinctly remember that in the book Katniss explains that one year, in an arena with very little food options, the tributes resorted to cannibalism and that it tanked viewership because the Capitolites watching were too disturbed by it. It's kinda funny how killing a 12 year old is good drama but they draw the line at cannibalism, although i suppose it would bring back bad memories of the Dark Ages where even people in the Capitol would resort to that.

    I think you misunderstood Peeta's character. From the moment he gets picked he is resigned to his death. He knows he can't win the games. He pretty much says so on that roof top. Everything he does from the time he decides to train separately is to try to save/help Katniss. I know most people don't like Peeta in the first movie but usually those who read the book at least by the end understand this. And of course no one has to like him just because of this but you keep saying him 'not doing anything' or 'only doing 2 things' for Katniss is why you dislike him. Or at least why you prefer Gale . . . Peeta literally saves her life by giving her the most expensive bread their district produces and takes a beating from his Mom when they were 12 for her. His plan to join the careers is literally only to get them off her trail like . . . I don't get it. He fights Cato just so she can get away sustaining a grave injury and lays down to literally die after he accomplishes this . . . Like you don't need to like him but it is made pretty clear what his intentions are. He has never felt threatened by her.

    I would like to state that Katniss is an unreliable narrator. What she thinks peeta's doing isn't what Peeta is doing all the time. She is pretty much thinking the worst of him because she fully expects him to want to kill her because that's the reality that the games shows to people. Also Petta is a bit of a damsel in distress. Also I hate Gail he gives frat boy douche vibes. He literally only realized he liked katniss romantically when a peacekeeper flirted with her. He gets angry at her for doing what she has to to survive in the games because she had to flirt with another guy. He's had s*** tons of girlfriends but he expects her to be only his that's f***** up. Also in the first book Gale as a romantic figure isn't really brought up it's mentioned that they have a more like relative vibe from katniss's perspective plus him being 2 years older than her and showing up in her life right after her dad died just gives me off vibes. Like a 2-year age difference isn't that big of a deal after you're 20 years old but these kids are teenagers. It's weird for a 10th grader to like an 8th grader and I'm pretty sure they were younger than that when they first met so yeah no. Gail overestimates his ability to provide where Peeta knows he's weak as s***.

    You’ll learn in the prequel the true reason they remove the bodies from the arena, and it didn’t start because of the mutations. Thats just a bonus.
    And they didn’t turn Cato ‘into a bitch’. They simply showed that as brutal as he was he is simply still a scared kid.
