A nice landmark here is the XL Center. It used to be the home of the Hartford Whalers. Today, it is one of the 2 homes of UConn basketball besides Gampel Pavilion. It is also the home of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers.
Connecticut is just one of those states you don’t really pay much attention to. Like it’s all suburbs of NYC I guess. I didn’t really imagine it even having a “larger” city. Nice.
Hartford is small, 120 thousands people, with a declining population. Poverty, crime, and below standard public schools, drives anyone who can afford it to the suburbs. The Atheneum, Mark Twain House, and the best looking state house in the US are all big attractions. Hartford Stage Community is a top notch regional theater company. You can skip the science museum. The food scene is pretty unremarkable. Shopping is done in suburban malls and shopping centers. The decent stores in Hartford closed in the early 80s. Hartford used to be fun and safe, but has become a commuter city. Streets are deserted after 6:30 pm. The state has pumped a lot of money into Hartford, but bad local leadership has not been able to use any of that help to spearhead a revival. I have fond memories of being a young professional there, but the city has been in a slow swirl around the drain for a few decades now. I hope they can get their act together. Constitution plaza used to be a fun place to hang out at lunch, but the last time I walked through, it was deserted, and poorly maintained. I wonder if light rail from Manchester to Farmington, AND, Rocky Hill to Windsor Locks, intersecting in downtown would help bring life back to the city. Also, why not extend Metro North from Waterbury to Hartford.
The wrong attention has been given to downtown, which has made it non desirable.The ballpark may have been a good investment, but all the surrounding businesses have business hours matching office hours, which makes NO SENSE. There should be activities during the weekend for children and families. The civic center mall, Richardson Mall, etc are gone

Seems like a much different place from when I lived there in the 70’s until mid 90’s. Looks depressing 😢
