      Yes, I must say, growing garlic in pots can be quite tricky as garlic is very sensitive to soil temperature and in pots the soil temperature fluctuates quite a lot, which means you can quite easily not get any bulbs. I hope this helps 🌻

    SA based channel?! That’s awesome!🥳 I grew up in a apartment, very disconnected from nature. Have no clue how to grow a thing but very excited and eager starting with growing food in pots. Don’t have a good size/location garden to use the ground. So, thanks for taking the time to do this videos 💚 I hope to learn a ton from you 😊

      Yay, thank you and I look forward to sharing as much knowledge as I can with you! Being a fellow South African it makes it easier to talk about seasons and general growing conditions.
      My no.1 tip for you would be to not over think or complicate things. I believe in mimicking nature and nature needs nothing fancy to absolutely thrive!
      If you have any video requests just drop me a comment and I will see if I can get it done for you 🌻

      In terms of timing, depending where you are in the country it may be tricky. I think this year is going to be a COLD one, which isn't great for late planted garlic. Here in the Western Cape we have had snow already (it's SO cold!) and up north of South Africa there has already been frost.
      Make sure you mulch deeply and give it a good feed to make sure it has lots of energy come spring to thicken up its growth.
      I have my fingers crossed for you 🌻

    I bought garlic and it started to shoot green leaves in my vegetable rack in open air in November 2022. I took these and put them in damp plastering soil and in less than 2 days the green shoots had gone to 5 cm long, so I removed from the sand to find thick long healthy roots, then I moved them into my garden soil. Something has now started to eat the green shoots on 1 of the 4 plants, but it seems to be bouncing back. Fingers crossed.

      So glad to hear you are winning with planting out our garlic and that you had such great success with the germination stage! I have found that nothing really touches garlic, probably because of the smell and taste, so it is interesting hearing that something is targeting yours. You could always look at adding some diatomaceous earth around the base of each garlic plant to keep critters away? Hoping this will help you out and result in a great garlic harvest 🌻

    Aah no, I wanna start growing garlic but winter is here. Could I maybe grow it in a pot and keep it indoors?🤔 Thank you, any advice would be appreciated 🙏

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no, missing the planting window really sucks 😞 Garlic does have a pretty specific planting window because you need to get all that leafy growth before the winter dormancy, but yes, if I were you I would plant them into 20cm pots (1 clove per pot) and put them in a windowsill in your house that gets lots of sun. When the leaves come out feed it with a high nitrogen fertiliser and then once you have really good growth you can plant it out at the beginning of August. It might work, it might now, but at least you will be giving it a bash 🌻

    I was considering planting garlic as a cash crop. Could do up 1500 sq m, although would probably start smaller to test the water. Situated just out of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. Any advice you could offer?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow! Nice! That sounds awesome! I would 100% do a much smaller section to test your growing conditions. For large scale my advice would be to secure 3 really important things:
      1. Really good quality garlic seed/cloves to plant out
      2. Good quality compost/fertiliser to feed on that scale
      3. A mulch that works for you on that scale without causing further issues, like weeds or intoducing herbicides
      I hope this helps a bit 🌻

    Hi there- great video. I live in Johannesburg- when do I plant? No winter rains here. We have summer rains. How long to grow before I can harvest it? How and when to harvest. Also, how much sun does the garlic need? thank you

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and for those great questions! To make things easier I am going to bullet point my replies 😀
      1. The garlic planting season is late March to early April and throughout South Africa we have the same planting timeframe
      2. The lack of winter rains for you is a really good thing! It means you have less chance of getting garlic rust, which is a huge issue with high moisture and humidity. You just need to make sure you add thick layers of mulch to keep the soil temperature consistent.
      3. You will usually harvest your garlic any time from October through to Dec, or when half the plants leaves have died back, so it is a long growing season
      4. Garlic needs full sun to form full bulbs
      I hope this helps 🌻

    When is the best time to plant in Cape Town?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey AJ, you can still get them in the ground now. The ideal time for growing garlic in Cape Town is end March and April 🌱

      @@MySustainabilityJourney Thanks. Would May be too late?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ajprojects5138 I don't think it too late, however, it depends on the winter we are going to have so it's risky.
      Ideally you want as much growth as possible before the winter cold and rain sets in as garlic growth slows down considerably during winter. You want as much green growth as possible so when temps warm up in spring all the photosynthesis and energy goes into creating bulbs and cloves, rather than leafy greens.

      @deidrejooste6263 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the video..
      What variety of seed do you plant?
      Also is it true that bulbs stop when soil Temps reach 25 degrees?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deidrejooste6263 it is only a pleasure 🌱 I usually plant store bought garlic from Food Lovers and it works 100%. This year I actually had quite a bit left over from summer that I planted out, which was cool.
      As for the bulbing, it is generally accepted that the higher the temps the quicker they stop bulbing, which is why spring/summer mulching is so important. Also remember it is soil temperature and not ambient temperature so just bear that in mind with your planning.
      Hope you get a bumper garlic crop 🧄
