After three years of minimal success with hardnecks here in zone 10, I finally did enough research to find out about the refrigeration technique. This is the only garlic video on TH-cam (and I've watched loads of them) that mentions this. Thank you for your thoroughness.
I live in zone 8b and some people here that are farmers said that only can plant elephant garlic

@@paulettelamontagne7153they have season to plant if you plant garlic 🧄 in The month of September to November it will be grow but here in The Philippines we used Bamboo technique to plant garlic 🧄 😊 December to February 😊

I have a bunch (no pun intended) from the Safeway supermarket that looked healthy and large and had decent roots. All got planted along with a bit of older cloves from two years ago which I also planted. Hope I'll get decent harvests as all are in pots and planters. Big experiment. I did similar with both commercial Music Garlic and supermarket garlic two years ago with so-so success. Here in the Mohave Desert Zone 8B is pretty so-so for vegetable gardening in my 2 years here. All was planted in Oct. and yes, we sure did get cold weather this past Winter! Never had that soak tip before and should try it this coming Fall! Thanks.

I just planted my garlic yesterday. I have never soaked mine before. I would have tried doing that if I had seen your video prior to me planting. I love growing garlic and I always recommend it to everyone I talk to about gardening. Love your videos! Always so informative and since I live in Arizona also it helps me with my gardening here.

This is very helpful-thank you! I had some organic garlic that started sprouting in the fridge and I decided to throw it in a cup with some water to see if it would root, and it’s like 4 inches tall with roots now! Lol, I wasn’t expecting that! Needless to say, I need to plant it-now-and fortunately, this is a great time to do it over here in FL (zone 10). I really appreciate the info on feeding and curing…didn’t even realize it needed to be cured until now.😬 Fortunately it won’t be hard to do here. Thanks again and may you have a prolific cool season garden!

Omg I’m glad I found you!!!!!!! You’re officially my “Go To” for all things gardening! I’m trying to find out the plants that are acidic and plant that way, can u do a video on that? Also, I grew from seed for the first time this season and it didn’t work too well….I germinated all seeds in composted manure only….they all germinated, but majority of them did not become mature and literally stayed about 3 inches tall….What’s the best soil to use when growing from seed?! This is my third year of planting garlic in Phoenix az area and This time I planted about 5 inches deep and follow your tips how ever I missed som fertilizing times but I just dug up two of my garlic's as the signs are there to prepare for harvest. I think it my be time to stop watering. I will water in the morning one more time and the stop watering It is April 17 2023. Does any one have any thoughts? The two I pulled are good sized much larger than my last 2 crops. I am so excited. That you Angela for guiding me in growing and for guiding me to Forever Yong Farms to buy my garlic for planting.
I planted my garlic (hard neck) at the beginning of October of last year, here in Mesa, Arizona. I harvested it in June. I planted it at the beginning of August this year. I used the same garlic, but directly replanted some without refrigerating them first….and planted some that were refrigerated first…..both are coming up just fine.
The refrigeration typically helps them to bulb up better. Let me know if you notice a difference at harvest time.

Wonderful video. I know I watched it last year but was too late for anything. That's when I learned you plant in the fall. I also watched it again later on and ordered the garlic and got it on time. You can also plant garlic in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. But if you have a very short growing season, the bulbs may not have time to fully mature. If you miss the fall planting window, you can start them indoors in early spring and transplant them outdoors after the frost danger is passed. It is best to harden them off before transplanting.

It should be listed in the description if you are purchasing it. When you take the cloves apart hardneck will have a hard central stem in the middle of the cloves as well.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing this information. I have a few questions about freezing the roasted garlic, it sounded like you leave the garlic paper on them when you freeze them. Is this what you do and how do they do after they thaw or do you remove the paper while still frozen? Thanks again Martin

Angela, I am growing 4 types of softneck from the growers in Amado. We have had a very mild and dry winter here in Tucson. Some of my garlic is leaning and has three or more dried leaves on bottom. I am wondering if it is ready to harvest? First time growing garlic. It has been a great experience and your videos are so helpful. Thanks in advance.
You can always harvest one and see. I typically harvest mine in May.
Great video. Pulled one of mine to check if they’re ready today and it didn’t form any cloves. Looks like a big green onion. What do you think went wrong?
I'd leave it in longer and see if it will form cloves as long as it seems to be still growing well.

I'm in Montreal, Canada and I planted my garlic in the month of November and cover them with leaves and hay; then, around this time (March) I remove the leaves and hay. I'm a novice so can someone tell me if I'm doing this right ???

I was reading the accompanying post on your website about growing garlic and listed as softneck varieties are Maiskij, Shilla, Ajo Rojo, and Burgundy. I went to the Forever Young Farms website and they have these varieties listed as hardnecks but some say warm weather adapted or widely adapted. Would you still put these varieties in the refrigerator for at least 6 weeks? Also, if buying softnecks, will they benefit from putting in the refrigerator for only 2-4 weeks?
I need to take a look at those, I may have gotten them mixed up. To answer your question, I try and put my softneck and hardneck in the fridge at least a few weeks before planting. I've had larger bulbs when they have been in the fridge.

I’m really confused? I live Sierra Vista Az. I went to the store and found some for planting. But after watching your video I now see it’s too late. As it’s almost spring. I would wait until fall if you want bulbs. If you want green ,young garlic and leaves you could plant it now.

I've been growing garlic (hard neck) for 8 yrs, watched many TH-cam videos but your video in the best of the bunch. I planted my garlic in the 3rd week of Oct (Zone 4/5) and watched them sprout. We've been using harvested garlic since August and recently had several cloves that appear to be rotted or eaten by a pest. This is the fourth year of planting in the same location - lots of sun, regular watering, and fertilizer. Any ideas why this is happening? I'm guessing that I should have planted the new cloves in a different location. Can I carefully dig up the sprouts (5"-6" high) and transplant them to a different location? The ground is not frozen yet. Can I grow something in that spot or just let it be for ? years? Thanks.
I'm not sure. I would probably let them be for now - or you could move some and see how they do. I'd hate for you to lose all of them if you moved them. In the future, definitely rotate where you plant each year. Try to go 2 seasons or more before planting in the same spot again.
9+ months is a long time for hard neck garlic to remain in the ground, especially if you are continuously watering them. You should withhold water a few weeks before harvesting. As soon as they are ready for harvesting, get them out of the ground and hung for curing.
Moving the sprouts should be OK, but disturb the roots as little as possible.

If you interplant them with other crops does the fact that you can't stop watering affect the garlic?

I just peel the garlic cloves from store bought garlic bulbs 🧄 then soak then in shallow tray so halfway covered in water in 5 days or so they sprout roots on the bottom of the clove and then I plant them no refrigeration required !
