    Love this pattern. It allows me to combine 4 hobbies. Turkey hunting (feather), Air rifles (provided a squirrel tail from the backyard), Fly tying, and fly fishing! Awesome. Thank you for sharing this!

      Great note! And what's cool about two of your hobbies- turkey and squirrel hunting, one nice turkey and you're set for feathers for a few years! I do tie a lot with squirrel but I don't go through more than 2-3 a year and they're so easy to come by. I could probably take a drive right now and get three off the side of the road in half an hour. :-)

    Matt! Thanks a million for the nice shoutout for the Streamers 365 project and my channel. Much appreciated!
    The fly looks great, those bodies can be tough. I find pulling the Mylar until it stretches a little helps keep it smooth. But like you say, fishing flies don't need to be as pretty ;) Cheers!

    Awesome tie Matt. I like bulky heads like on the old Lake Flies for bass or the "Gaudy Wets" as they were called. pushes water. I like the almost Spey-like turkey slip over wing on this one. Yes Darren is an amazing man, humble, generous, awesome fly tier. We had some great conversations over the years and I met some very nice, knowledgeable people on that channel. Hank Vana, Steve Trybalski, Kerry Pitt, to name a few. I flipped out when I found out Darren was behind Streamers 365. Now I see his connection with Kerry Pitt. So thanks for getting the band back together, your channel has the same community feel that Piscator has. BTW, I wondered if DAN Gapen was the same Gapen that has the tackle / lure company. I fish "gear" as well as "fly" and used his Ugly Bug jig for walleye - killer lure. In the images was the Thief from Streamers 365. I'll have to look further. Thanks again Matt.

      Joe- this is a great bit of history! Steve and Kerry watch a lot of my videos and always leave some great constructive comments. And I agree- Darren is a great guy. Generous and certainly helped me out a few months ago. And thanks for saying the channel has a community feel to it... that's really something I was hoping to be able to build. Plus encourage new tiers and give back whenever possible. I'm not sure if this Dan Gapen is the same one you remember, but it may very well be as that's not too common of a name. Thanks again for the nice comment. Cheers. -Matt

    Nice looking fly. I bet it would work quite well for any freshwater fish & maybe even salt. When tying a bunch of these, it might be a good idea to coat the bodies in UV resin or nail polish (old school) for durability, then tie in the wings & head.
    This would be an interesting fly to test in the water tank.

    • @SavageFlies

      I'd say you're right Mike, that lots of similar patterns have likely been designed by different tiers from different eras and regions. Think of it this way... if more than one person came up with a very similar pattern, it's probably a good one. :-)

      Cannot speak to his version but mine is one of my go to minnow/ dragon fly patterns!
      Used on the point with a small (+12) wet soft hackle 2 ft. above on a short stiffish dropper,
      and fished in pulses on the swing has caught some nice trout for me! Plus, it is a fast easy tie!

    Hey matt I was wondering what u think ... i dont have any squirrel so could i use dark buck tail instead. Thanks

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, you can substitute for the hair wing. But keep in mind that bucktail is a bit more hollow than squirrel so it will be more likely to float unless you put some weight on it. Other options for this would be calf tail (I think it's a little more dense than bucktail.) You could also probably use other varmints like muskrat or opossum guard hairs if you had any long enough.

    By any chance do you know how to dye squirrel tails? I’ve been looking for a video but can’t find one. I finally caught my first streamer trout today! It was on a buck tail streamer with some Crystal flash in the tail, the trout was about 16 inches 👍

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've dyed a squirrel tail one time. I was dying a yellow batch of fur and just threw in a squirrel tail because I had some extras. I did it the same way I do any materials. Do note, that the dark brown and black parts of the hair won't take dye and really just the light parts will come out with any color. Note- I'm no expert on dyeing and have only done it a couple of times, but here's a video I did of the basics of dyeing: th-cam.com/video/-mlyOdxuUS8/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for the question!

    I like the fly. I'm wondering if it wouldn't fish just fine without the turkey wing. My wife tells me I think too much sometimes. What does she know she doesn't fish. I see you watch Brian Wise too Matt. Keep the good stuff coming.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, I love Brian's channel. He ties a lot bigger and flashier than I do but he makes some great patterns. Regarding this one without the turkey wing... I have no idea how it would look. With just the squirrel tail I think it might look like more of a standard baitfish, or even a trout fry, than it would a sculpin which I think the muddler most closely resembles.

    • @SavageFlies

      I'd say use whatever you would use for he fish you are targeting. If you're fishing it as a small streamer in small to medium trout water, sure, use your 3- or 5-wt rod and light tippet. But if you're tossing it for some big bass, you'll want to be using whatever you use for that. My bass rig is a 9-ft 7-wt, but I've used my 5-wt plenty of times for bass (both smallmouth and largemouth). Good luck!
