Now Mateus, he's a great one, style and sound all his own, saw him live on two tours numerous times kill it with Tori Kelly when she rocked the house before this new style change...one of the most enjoyable guitarists I've ever witnessed live.
Everytime I start getting back into playing guitar, I always come across someone so insanely good that I don’t even feel like trying anymore lmao. First Tommy Emmanuel, then Tim Henson and now this dude.
That transition is beyond smooth. How TF he did that without missing a note and keeping time is unreal. Beyond the difficulty of the finger picking in the first place with the pick crammed into his middle finger. That’s years and years of practice to make it look that easy.
I learned that similar technique from Mark Tremonti; he usually plays fingerstyle with his thumb and index; and seeing him do these quick switches like Mateus does here would perplex me for a long time; when you have the technique down; you suddenly have a wide variety of dynamics “at hand” (no pun intended..) in an instant! Opens up for a lot of creativity; very cool!
If I were starting again today, I would watch Mateo Mancuso and use his style and build up from there. he literally has five pics on his finger and can do things a flat picker cannot do
Him or Marshall Harrison, he uses a pick and the three other fingers in a systematic way that is like economy picking on steroids and allows him to sweep as much as possible
It’s awesome, but everything he does has a classical feel to it. Everything I’ve listened to, or watched him in interviews, live, etc. Is there something that isn’t like that you can turn me onto, that he’s been doing?
@@CorbCorbin disagree go watch all his videos. He plays Van Halen he plays country. He does Brent Mason perfectly. He can play any style. Yes he does the fusion stuff as well but close your eyes. It doesn’t sound like classical music dude just because he’s playing with his fingers.
The problem with using your fingers is you will never be able to play single note lines as fast as a pick. When you really focus a pick and vibrate your wrist it's faster than any fingers can pick and if don't proper faster than your hand can fret unless you play chromatics and double/triple up on notes. However, there are so many more positives to have a strong hand picking style that forgoing some of that speed is probably worth it.@@TruckinNpluckin2
First saw Dave Murray do something like this during Rock in Rio 2001 for the tapping section in The Sign of the Cross... previously I had no idea how players shifted between fingerstyle and plectrum tech, and it was a complete lightbulb moment for me.
I leaned this pick hiding technique from James Hetfield, I saw it in one his interviews decades ago & thought it's cool 😎 It actually helps👍🏻 ( hiding pick in fingers has a different sound as you use one/two fingers to hold the pick & the rest of the fingers to play) try hiding the pick & without the pick too. Both are useful ✌🏻
I watched Eddie do it in Live Without a Net and immediately started copying it. After a few months I was doing it on autopilot. EVH had so many less-obvious tricks in his arsenal!
I used to think the same. It was a technique I accidentally developed and just assumed everyone did it. I still get asked where my pick came from when switching from fingerstyle to using the pick..!
I usually hold it against my palm with the ring finger, which is less stable and slightly harder to switch from than this. You also don't have all fingers free to finger pick.
This man has a perfect blend of every quality needed to be a great musician: Style, feel, technique, speed, taste, etc. A true master of his craft. Listen, in awe.
