When it comes to dress shopping I can well understand Gary Delaney's reactions to each of them. I remember many years ago going out with a close lady friend of mine ( I use the term lady very loosely because her language is even worse than Sarah's ) and we spent several hours traipsing around a lot of the dress shops in Manchester only to return to the first one where she picked up the dress that she first tried on. It cost her a load of money - at that time it was probably close to the GDP of a Third World country - and then we went back to her house. That's an entire afternoon that I'll never be able to recoup for the rest of my life.
So we got back to her house and she rushed upstairs to try it on ( AGAIN! ) and then came downstairs to do the obligatory fashion show that most women like to do and the conversation went as follows -
Her: " Ta-da, well what do you think of it?.....Does my arse look big in this dress? "
Me: " Well, it's not as if I haven't seen you dressed in it before, is it? Despite the change in location including the bus ride home as well as the different lighting it looks much the same on you as it did in the shop, doesn't it? As to your second question, no your arse doesn't look big in that particular dress at all because your arse looks big in ALL of your dresses anyway so there's no change there, is there? "
Her: " Fuck off, you bastard.....! "
She then left the scene of this accident and stormed back upstairs and changed back into the clothes that she'd been wearing during our assault on Manchester City Centre.
The moral of this story is that no man should EVER go out clothes or shoes shopping with any woman - unless of course they're very pissed or 'stoned' - because it's something akin to visiting the Twilight Zone or a parallel universe that you're unable to escape from for an untold number of hours. You have been warned, Gents.
She got her revenge on me some time after that and after I'd got knocked down by a car while crossing the street on Deansgate Manchester and I had to go to Manchester Royal Infirmary A & E Department. While I was waiting to be seen by the doctor I rang her at home and she promised to drive down to pick me up and she said that she'd cook my tea and let me sleep over at her house because it was closer to the hospital than my own gaff. She started laughing at me immediately when she saw me hobbling out of the hospital and said that it reminded her of how she was walking after she'd given birth to her daughter and she'd had to have stitches.
Most British women can be so sympathetic at times but unfortunately there's always one exception to that rule and she happens to embody it. Surprisingly enough we're still close friends to this day even though we can be verbally vicious to one another at times even when we're out in company with others.
