Derek Warwick - Raw Racing

  • Derek Warwick is a former racing driver who competed in 147 Formula 1 races in the 80s and early 90s. He is currently the president of the British Racing Drivers Club and an FIA driver steward, for instance at Monaco 2014.
Derek won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1992 and was World Sportscar Champion in the same year.
I met with Derek in his lovely house in Jersey to talk about his life in racing. In this fascinating portrait he talks about his progression from Superstoxx to the pinnacle of motorsport, how he always seemed to pick the wrong cars and why Ayrton Senna did not want him to be his team mate in Lotus in 1986.
We also talked about how the sudden death of his brother Paul changed his life and the tough job of ensuring Silverstone is hosting a F1 race every year.
"I did not have enough badness in me" - a fascinating person talking about one of the best decades the sport has seen... raw racing.

What a marvellous portrait of a terrific guy. I'll never forget his courage in Monza, when he had that terrifying accident exiting Parabolica, jumped out, shook himself off, walked to the pit lane, and just got on with it.
I was in the back seat of the Medical Car at Spa when Derek came up to have a chat with Sid about a month after Paul was killed. At the time (my second F1 race), this was the closest I'd been to death at the circuit. I was moved deeply by Derek's dignity and the depth of his suffering. It was a powerful introduction to the other side of the sport we love.
    Bravo Mario. And bravo Derek.

I worked with Derek on the PR side, and the change in him after the death of Paul was palpable.
Before the accident he truly was the nicest guy in F1, but after Paul’s death it was as if a light had been extinguished . . .

I have to admit that listening Derek talking about his little brother is heartbreaking. That shows that you can only accept the sorrow and learn how to live with that, but you can't overcome it.
I have no words kind enough to thank you, Mario, for this interview.
What a special human being Derek is.
    What a gentleman.
    Thank you again, Sir.

Many thanks for all your comments. Being able to meet Derek was such an honer. Listening to him and feeling the passion for racing in the room was unique. It is great to see that some of that experience can be shared with a large number of fans out there.
A lot of hours go in the production these documentaries without getting any monetary compensation, but is always a big motivator to read and see how many people like my "hobby".
There are so many great stories in formula one that need to be told. I can only carry on trying to find and convince people to share them when you keep on watching, commenting and sharing. That is the only way I can "compete" with TV broadcasters.
    Thank you.

Without doubt, your work is tremendously appreciated here, Mario. Many thanks for your time and effort in allowing "under the radar' stories emerge and be heard. As "Paww" said above, Derek, in this case, was wonderful.

TV broadcasters should be ashamed of themselves that "some guy with a camera" manages to get these stories told in such a neatly styled video all on his own dime. Mad props Mario Muth, your videos are stunning (and honestly, I thought they were assignments for some big outlet, didn't realise it's just you sharing your passion).

    Great stuff, Mario.
Derek was a good driver. I saw him racing in my home town, Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian GP from 1982 to 1989, in Jacarepagua. In 1984, Brazilian GP, driving his first race for Renault, he was leeding when his car broke. He deserved a least a victory in F1.

I absolutely LOVED Derek "Old Man DelBoy" Warwick when I was growing up, maybe because he ran those lovely Arrows powered by Megatron engines, the coolest engine name EVER. He also seemed to be a fair, honest, non nonsense guy, not a prima donna at all. Mario, what about you setup a patreon so we can help you finance producing more interviews and documentaries, they are fantastic!

I remember watching Derek in Austria in the 80s in the revolutionary (but crap) Brabham. In practice he got a puncture right in front of us while going flat out on the straight and went upside-down for a few hundred yards. He got out of the car, ran back to the pits, got in the spare car and went straight out again.
At the (first) Hungarian GP we were invited to a reception by one of the Brabham sponsors, and met Derek (and Ricardo Patrese who was a right sourpuss). I'll never forget Derek going to the buffet and getting some ice cream. Then he saw my wife and said "How rude of me", gave it to my wife and went back and got another one for himself. What a GENT! Mind you, maybe he was after my wife LOL.

Fascinating documentary. I always considered myself a fan of Derek. It might seem silly, but many, many people thought Derek was a better prospect than Nigel Mansell. It was a shame that Derek's F1 career took that wrong turn with Renault and never really recovered.

I fall in love with Derek during '83 Monaco GP Edition. I was 18th year old at the time and I was there with my father to attend the race. I remember his battle with Marc Surer like it was now. Then I became a big supporter of him. I was doing motocross at the time and I made my helmet with same colours as Derek. Living in Italy where everybody supports Ferrari and Ferrari's drivers it was not easy. I think Derek has been the greates F1 driver who never win a race. A real gentleman. Very good interview.

Had the pleasure of interviewing him myself and didn't have the balls to ask him about Paul because I feared he would do as he is in this clip and struggle to fight back the tears - if he had done that in front of me I would have broke down. To see the pain in his eyes and know that he's never recovered from it is shattering.

When he talks about Silverstone and British motor racing at the end was really surprising. Silverstone being one of, if not the only track to be 100% self funded on the calendar, that has to be some kind of joke?! The track steeped with the most history and the home of F1 and British motor racing gets 0 help but yet tracks like Monaco and Abu Dhabi are still on the calendar with funding?! Blows my mind.

That was a superb interview. Really enjoyed that - I remember Derek Warwick in F1 when I started watching it in the mid-late 80s but I have to say most of his recollections were completely new to me. Had no idea about his racing outside of F1.
Fitting title too, as that interview was indeed very "raw" and powerful. Great work once again :)

Just watched this after watching your video with Murray Walker. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. These are absolutely fantastic and so eye opening. The only stuff I really knew about Derek was during his BTCC era so to hear him talk so candidly really is a pleasure.
