I love that Uncle Phil stood there and let Will vent on him and only stepped in to comfort him when the time was right. That's a REAL father, right there 🥺

I'm 44 almost 45 and I still ask why my dad doesn't want me. Worse part when I was going through Cancer treatment, which was super hard, constant er and hospital visits not once did my dad call or offer to come out and help. That was the nail in the coffin for me. He's dead to me.
There are many fathers trying their absolute hardest to have a loving relationship with their children only to have their efforts sabotaged by bitter, toxic mothers / ex partners.
I wonder why just about ANYONE didn't want me albeit my dad. He had two other boys that he raised with no issues with his wife. He just didn't want me, just like so many others in my life (but they wanted my sister though), but guess what? My life is way better now than it ever was. They say that the less people that you have around, the less drama that you find yourself in and oh boy, isn't that the truth.
Yeah it still hurts, but I'll get over that eventually.

Whenever I see this episode, it always gets me in tears.
I especially love how silent the audience is and you can hear an audience member who is crying and let's out a little wail of sadness.

I was told that the thing about this scene is that Will legitimately broke down while playing this scene because his actual father left him.
Wrong. His father did not leave him. Will literally has interviews where he said he struggled to nail this scene and that James Avery was his number one critic and motivator and due to this, he killed that scene to prove to James that he could do it and to gain acceptance by him.

Uncle Phil was the father Will needed. He would make sure he was a disciplined individual, and whilst he would be angry and have a short fuse, he would never raise a hand at him, but when Will was genuinely in trouble or was upset, Phil would always be there to help him.

Ben Vereen stated in an interview that he broke into tears himself after walking out the camera shot to leave Will. Vareen, a father himself, couldn't imagine doing that to his children.
He definitely played that bad guy character on this episode

That actually wasn’t part of the script. He was supposed to just brush it off but will smiths dad did actually leave him when he was younger and so will fell apart on the set and they kept it in. If you listen the last few seconds of the video you can hear other people crying. That wasn’t written in..

I think people should avoid going through life thinking that whatever that happened to them is the norm.
You think that it makes the pain more bearable but no, in fact its the perfect mindset for you to always see reality through the frame of your wounds and never be able to have something better.
Example: your father was a bad man.
Then you assume most man are like that.
Because you assume that you dont even see the good ones.
Then somehow your assumptions bring you to be with a man exactly as your dad.
And then you get your view on reality even more reinforced " see! All man are like that"
While it was you all along, who lived and created everything according to the small frame of what happened in childhood.
Step out of there my friend! I don't even know many people who dont have a father there are many wonderful dedicated fathers out there.
You may ask then why your one left... Its not about you its about him.
Some people have limitations inside, and they cannot be parents.
Later on they have too much guilt and just avoid the family. Its not about the kid, never.
This scene is absolutely heartbreaking. I remember when this episode aired. The moment a child faces the reality that his absentee father doesn't want him and will never be in his life. Fantastic acting by Will. His finest moment on television.
Alot of it comes from a real place, his own father was a violent drunk who beat his mother. All the talk about not needing Lou and how he'll be a better father comes from Will's personal pain. He wrote about it in his book.

@Beardo2517 it's all true. Will has talked about it. In his last book he talked about how when he was 9 he watched his father punch his mom in the side of the head so hard she collapses and spit out blood. There were multiple news articles talked about that part of the book.

Something I love about this scene is how Will's determined to have a good life despite how his father's treated him.
They say the best revenge is a life well lived. Will definitely got his best revenge.

Funny enough, it's easy to say what you will do until you get in the scenario yourself. I tend to think most absent fathers are away primarily because of abusive, controlling mothers. Not always the case, but the system favors single mother households despite statistically worse outcomes.

Regardless, what a person forgives is specific to each individual. Some see the BS. Others grow to see it later. Any parental absence implies a broken family to begin with. Applying appropriate blame to either side makes no substantive difference from that regard. I'm just saying that the absence (fair or unfair) is generally the control of the custodial party. Blaming men or espousing someone as absent or deadbeat fails to recognize the actual common factors.
When Will says "You too, Lou", Lou throws a subtle "damn". He knows he fucked up but he's too coward to stay or apologize, he runs away from the scene immediately.
Brilliant acting from Ben Vereen too. The scene hit him so hard he broke in tears after leaving the stage.

That word was actually the most important part of the scene. By calling him by his name instead of Dad, he is defining their relationship from that point forward

It's heartbreaking once you realize Will, behind all the goofiness and smiles was honestly a scared kid who had to learn to bounce back from difficult situations cause he really only had himself

I have a father in my life, but he's just so uncaring and emotionally distant most of the time that he has never sat down and taught me anything about life and stuff. Sure, he works hard to pay the bills and child support, but other than that, he just sorta "exists" in my life. Never really acted like a "father" to me.

Just saw this episode last night while expecting a great laugh I also experienced a great cry. The line "You too, Lou" is so powerful. It represents Will's father as some stranger he just met rather than the father he was that took care of him. "How come he don't want me?" was the ultimate finisher line that ends the episode with tears dropping from my eyes.
First things first R.I.P. uncle Phill . The father that Will and so many of us needed but didn’t realize it at the time. Till we get older . This scene never fails to hit me in the feels 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

When James Avery died, this was the scene I looked for. Saw this episode when it aired with my mother. She always wanted her woman chasing dad to want to be part of her life. She and my dad owned a statuary store in the 70s. When Will pulls out the present, she lost it. I told her, (me with the great parents) what I’d say to any who are left behind. You could have been the most spectacular human being, he still would have left. HE couldn’t handle anything. Child abandonment is the Ultimate “it’s not you, it’s him.”

My mom passed when I was 9, my dad has been extremely supportive and caring to me. Am now 29 and with a single call he will drop everything to help me in any situation. I can see him starting to get up there in age but still goes out his way for me and my sister. The day he passes away, I don’t know how am gonna handle it
I am so sorry for your loss I can’t even imagine. Losing my mother almost killed me but I was an adult I can’t imagine that happening when I was a kid. I still feel like a kid inside though. I am in same situation you are I just have my dad and he’s a great dad. It’s so hard getting older and the circle of life and death. So very hard. My dad is getting up there too. I guess all we can do is let them know how much they mean to us now. Theirs nothing else we really can do.
I lost my dad in 2016, we all knew he was at the end of his rope but it still hit us all hard when he did pass, I was only 28 he was 61, u can never be ready for it

This was one of Will Smith's finest acting moments. It's a shame the passion behind it came from a poor relationship with his real dad. You can see Uncle Phil just desperate to hold him and help him through his pain.

@@reliablereindeer I have seen an interview with Will Smith where he talks about a very strained relationship with his father. I know his father didn't leave in real life but he was abusive to Will's mother which caused tensions and anger.

Such an emotional delivery. A lot of the ending wasn’t scripted, it’s why you can hear Hilary crying in the background and it’s why Uncle Phil throws Will’s hat away

I work at a group home for indigenous kids in Canada. Wills reality is more common than you can imagine. Let me just say that Will is extremely lucky to have an uncle Phil.

Also it's the fact that when Will gave that speech about father and shit, part of it is improvised because before in his childhood he experienced the same thing about his own father for leaving him, so this scene is genuine, acting and real

His dad physically abused Wills mother and they divorced when he was a teenager, but his Dad played a large role in his life. Will writes that his Dad attended every game, recital, play, and supported him in his acting career as well as music. He had mixed feelings about his father.
Damn… that hit hard. Safe to assume this is the most crucial scene in Fresh Prince that probably got Will Smith noticed BIG TIME! Such a phenomenal actor. Gives me goosebumps and shivers down my spine towards the end during that hug. You can really feel it.

Stellar individual? Have you not seen "The Slap Heard Round the World"? I used to be a HUGE Will Smith fan, and I grew up on the FPOBA show. It was and still is my fav show ever. But...Will Smith has gotten weird. The slap, his weird kids, his weird marriage. Still a fan of his, but nowhere near like before.
We could all use a man like uncle Phil in our lives. Now there was a role model.
The thing about the acting and the emotion in this scene... It wasn't rare on this show. They didn't push it too often, but most of the cast had fantastic talent, and whenever the emotion needed to hit, it hit hard.
Yeah they usually had a couple episodes per season that really hit the emotions. This one was just especially powerful for Will because it's him getting off his chest everything he wanted to say to his abusive father when he was growing up. The guy was a drunk who used to beat his mom infront of Will.
I can relate so much. Met my father at 22, visited him on the other side of the US 3 different times over the years. Haven’t heard from him in 15+ years.

It's not so beautiful if you look into why Will so emotional during the scene. Will and his dad had a bad relationship due to his dad being a drunk who routinely beat his mother. Here's some lines from his book “When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood,” “For failing her in that moment. For failing to stand up to my father. For being a coward.” “I decided to be funny. I wanted to please and placate him because as long as Daddio was laughing and smiling, I believed we would be safe. I was the entertainer in the family. I wanted to keep everything light and fun and joyful.”

No matter how many times I watch this scene, it always stings the same...and I always cry😢.
I met my father one time on my 18th birthday. He shook my hand and said to me "well I'm here meeting you so what the f*** do you want from me?" I told him that there's nothing I want from him. He passed away about a week ago from a heart attack. Went to the funeral and met his family. He had love in his heart for them, but not for me. I was his mistake according to his family. I felt that way that Will expressed perfectly. I just wanted to leave a comment that expressed how I felt at my father.

My dad taught me many things alright. He taught me that I should never be seen by my kids drinking alcohol, that I should always be by my kids no matter what, that it's not important how many women I have to let go, I'd linger with my kids till they need me no more.
According to Will Smith, he had REAL trouble getting the part with Uncle Phil right. James Avery took him aside and gave him advice, told him to just let it all out. And after Will gave the performance you see here, in that hug, Avery whispered to him "Now THATS acting!" It's a story none of the cast or crew have ever disputed, and I think it says a lot about both how tight they were and the role that James Avery served not just as an actor, but a mentor of sorts for Will.
That was the most heartbreaking episode I've ever watched. I used to watch Fresh Prince religiously. That one made me cry as a kid and more now that I'm a parent.

He got to drawn on his own personal pain of having an abusive father. The scene was a cathartic release for Will getting to say all the things he wish he said to his dad when growing up.
@bradmiles1984 Umm no. Will Smith's dad was not an absentee father. Or abusive to him. Wills words in this scene do not reflect his real life pain or his feelings on his dad. He's spoken on this fact many times. His real dad may have not been a great husband, but he was a fine father.

This scene hits me hard everytime and makes me cry. I can really relate to this, 31 years old and I dont need my dad. But it hurts that he was never there for me, not in the little moments like Will mentioned and not in the big moments. He will never get to meet his grandson that's for damn sure and the only thing he ever taught me how you shouldnt be a dad. Been years since I have seen him but it still hurts me. I made peace with that but I will never ever understand why.

Being able to hear the off screen actors/actresses crying over this just shows how hard this actually hits.
The audience wasn't even being annoying and laughing, I bet they were crying.
Ikr you could even hear one of the female audience members cry

I've seen this scene so much and every time in just pleased at the absolute perfection in the acting of this moment. He captured what I felt every word was the way I felt growing up
