A few days ago, my new bicycle using an LG washing machine brushless motor was completed. In the first conversion, (which you can see at the following link: • Washing Machine brushl... ), I reached a dead end. The single-arm frame with the wheel-rotor was flexing too much, thus risking the magnets touching the stator on road bumps. Moreover, without any gear reduction, too much energy was needed when starting. In my new project I use the old motor and improve it by using neodymium magnets in a Halbach Array arrangement, while I power it with a VESC at 48 Volts and 1800 Watts.
The 4000mAh Lipo pack is too small for my needs, but I have left something for later.
Special thanks to Aggeliki for my ENG Subs

I am forkin speechless.... Have seen many designs of the electrics, the frame etc but yours is the best by far... Simplistic if I may say so but yet so elegant and functional and compact.. I need to watch this vid many more times to absorb all the engg details but am very impressed.. Keep up the good work... cheers

I like how you fixed the flex issues, and I’m surprised I’ve never seen a Halbach array on a BLDC before. The 3D printed magnet mounts are smart, although for maximum torque I’d have made them just as temporary spacers to facilitate the epoxying of the magnets directly onto the rotor. Could get smaller clearances (0.5mm per side) that way also.
I think you could have wound the stator for a higher Kv, seeing as I think you ended up gearing up the speed. Gearing down for torque means less ohmic losses from what I understand, but maybe the peak power output is better in the way you’ve put it. Not that temperature was ultimately a problem.
That FOC mode is very useful to know, I’ll be sure to see about using that for my own BLDC conversion!

Yout trousers seem to get very close to the motor's chain.
I strongly recommend using a chain cover there. Such a powerful motor could easily get some serious harm done if the chain catches something

Hi there! My battery is placed under the seat. Is a small 12s 4000mAmp/h Lipo pack made for RC planes. I choose that because of the huge discharge rate... My set up is working now @ 52V and 37 Amps top means that at high speed i reach almost 1800 Watts. I never think about the total cost of the project. Most expensive part is time and tools you need to go through that..

Samsung makes a slightly smaller 18 pole motor ( 9") of similar design. At 400hz, the larger ones turn @ 1000 RPM. The smaller ones do less. But if you split the coils and lower the voltage to 150V with the coils as 3 two coil pairs per phase, you can get what normally would be an 800 RPM max motor to turn at 2000 RPM. At that RPM, the smaller motor might actually have a higher HP than the larger ones which are rated at 1400 RPM. Doing the magnet change would also help as you did with the larger one.
