Because the LMG has an open bolt system, when you don‘t rack the gun, the bolt will be all the way at the front and you dont see into the chamber if theres a bullet in it. if you rack it, the bolt stays at the rear and you will be able to see inside the chamber. You could do it while its open but when something goes wrong and a bullet goes off while its open, a lot of shit can fly into your face. Plus, when the bolt is forward, you cant put the gun in safe, you have to rack the gun and then you can put it in safe. PS: former lmg gunner lol
@@khalilbelhi3569 true about the safety, but in the forward postion it can't fire its an open bolt fire unlike the m16 and my and other systems where they are closed bolt fire. I remember in iraq came in from a convoy mission and the guy working the door got on me cause my 249 wasn't on safe. Had to give him a full lesson on 249 for him to understand
Stephen Carr Yes you‘re right but when you rack the bolt while the cover is open something can go wrong and the bolt can fly forward which would cause a bullet to go off. Thats one reason why you rack the bolt before you open the cover.

My guess would be to see inside the gun or clear any belt links/brass that may cause obstructions before loading another can
