Tesla Model Y - Easiest DIY PPF for Front Bumper (Replacing Damaged PPF From

  • I have completely wrapped my Tesla Model Y with DIY PPF from ‪@DriveProtected‬ and it has officially paid for itself. After a #hondabump in Tucson, and an unknown object in Texas hitting an A Pillar, I had to replace some PPF pieces on our Model Y.
The great news is that the PPF did what it is supposed to do, it saved the paint on the Model Y. Instead of expensive paint repair, I only had to replace 3 panels of PPF, for a total cost of $531. This is a fraction of the cost of the paint repairs that I would be looking at had I not had PPF on the car to prevent major damage.
I had to replace the passenger A Pillar, drivers side fender, and the front bumper on our Tesla Model Y. While ordering replacement PPF, I asked for the newly released 5 piece front bumper from Drive Protected Shop, and I am very happy that I did.
In the past, I have installed 3M, Xpel and Defense Plus. This Defense Plus film is as thick, and comes with a 10 year warranty like the Xpel film. It also installs just as easily, unlike the 3M that is a much less forgiving film. My first bumper took 6.5 hours and the other 2 bumpers I have down to 4.5 hours. This 5 piece kit took me a shocking 1.5 hours to complete, which is significantly less time, and unbelievably easier than the 1 piece bumper kit.
If you have held off, or failed installing the front bumper PPF kit on your Tesla Model Y or Model 3, this 5 piece kit may be the solution you have been looking for. You can do this yourself, and save literally thousands by doing it yourself.

Based upon your previous videos I did PPF on my 22 M3P. I made some mistakes, of course on my first time. The bumper is particularly difficult, so I'm glad there's an updated PPF cut to make it easier. That makes PPF by DIY a reasonable thing to do. We met at the Ocala Supercharger christening, where you demonstrated the mattress to me. I bought it and went on the Tesla camping trip at Cape Canaveral. I was extremely pleased with the mattress you showed to me. I'm a bigger guy at over 6 feet and over 250 lbs, yet I slept extremely well on the mattress in camp mode. I appreciate all your work. Also, I've rebuilt my Tesla seats in the model 3, I think will fit in the Y as well. The seats just were too tight and hurt me on long drives. I totally replaced the inner foam on both front seats. I retained the Tesla cover and electricals. It looks stock. It works extremely well for me. I have built a couple more for other owners. Now I'm trying to eliminate top of the window noise at higher speeds. I've reduced it greatly by adjustments but not yet 100%. Keep up all your good work, it is inspiring.

Great video, thank you! I'm getting ready to use your code and get the front third, and maybe do the entire '23 Model Y if I survive doing the bumper/front, sounds like the multi-part bumper cut out will really help since I'm a first timer. I know you're experienced at this point and while watching this video, it seems like you are using a lot less slip and tack than I have seen in other vids. Specifically it looks like you are using the minimum possible slip and then mainly tack at the edges? Or is that just due to the editing, and you're tacking all coverage area? I've seen so many DIYers talk about next day bubbles and fingers and understand some will go away but others don't and wondered if it's a result of using too much and having surfaces too wet? Any guidance is appreciated and thanks again for this great instruction! Seems to me more than half the battle is not being scared to do it given the savings.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yea, I am reasonably comfortable with the install now, but even if I was an expert, the multi piece front bumper would still be my choice...1,000% easier install. I try to use as little slick solution as possible. I only use it as a base layer, then if I need to adjust a piece, I may use some more. Everything else is tack. I tack all the corners, tack the whole panel if it is already lined up nicely, etc.

They would have 7 days to do the job, and were confident they would have it done a day early.
I kept an eye on the car using sentry cam all week, and the car never moved, day or night.
When I arrived 7 days later to pick it up, you’d thought they’d seen a ghost. They hadn’t done ANYTHING to the car. They said they would work all night on the car and have idly ready to go for me in the morning. (I was 6 hours from home, and had to work the next day at 1pm.
Over night, they got the PPF and all the tinting done, except the windshield. I had already prepaid half at this point. We agreed that I would come back the next week and they would do the windshield. I went ahead and paid them the balance due.
A week later, I came back, and showed up at 11am for a 12pm appointment. They were surprised I showed up so early. It was just an hour and I had zero expectations they would start it right then and there. They then wanted to charge me $500 to do the windshield. I told them that I’d already paid in full and that was already included in my payment. The guy disagreed. So I whipped out the text messages I had with the owner showing we had already discussed the plan and price. He disagreed again, so I stood up to walk out and he changed his mind and would do it “out of kindness.” So I let them do it. We went out, I pointed out issues that needed fixed, like edges coming up and how they cut around my Dual Motor badge to get it done fast. I had a new badge, so asked them to remove the PPF on the rear and replace with no cutout and out new badge on the film. I also pointed out the tar.
They replaced the price that is on the trunk to put the badging on correctly, but did not replace the fender that had the tar under it. The windshield looks good, except for a crease about an inch long right in front of the drivers view out.
Needless to say, I took my key after they were done and left. The owner texted a few days later asking how it looked and I told him about all the issues. He insisted they washed the car and would never have left tar on the car and filmed over it. I said I would send him pictures to prove it, since he thinks I’m lying about the tar. He got a bit defensive and wanted me to leave them a 5 star review because they worked all night to do the PPF the first time around, then claimed he gave me the windshield for free to make up for it. My invoice from them is not itemized, so you can’t tell what they charge for what, just says PPF & tint is $5,238. So, he claims I didn’t pay for the windshield, but can’t prove where each dollar went. But, if I leave him a good review, he says, “we’ll be good man.”
Like, what if I don’t leave a good review? Are you coming after me, claiming I didn’t pay for something? I have no way to prove what I did and did not pay for since he doesn’t itemize his invoice.
In the end, I had to tell him to not contact me again. I would not be bringing the car back for any corrections, I would not be leaving a review, and I would not recommend his business to any other owner looking for PPF or tint.
I plan to leave the film over the tar now that winter is coming, and I travel for work, so it won’t be February until I am home again to where I could pull it off and replace that bumper piece.
Really sad and unfortunate. If I had more time at home, I would have definitely ordered this kit and done it myself. Now, I’m stuck with what I’ve got, and have to see that nasty fender every day for the next several months until I’ll have a clean space where I can replace it.

@@ericsawatzky54 Thank you. I agree, money back would be nice, so that I can get some of that back and use it towards replacement cost. But, at this point, I don’t even want anything to do with them anymore, and I’m willing to just take a loss on the piece that still needs redone.

I like eric and drive protected but their website is flat out lying and trying to scare you into buying the shipping protection. THEY are responsible for the package until it gets delivered to your house. They are NOT responsible for anything that happens after delivery. IF it gets lost during transit, THEY are responsible for making it right. If they do not, file a charge back and you will win. This is plain and simple.

im sorry for all of you paying 8k for ppf, its not that expensive not for a model s or 3. model Y ans X are a slightly higher price. And that fender shouldnt take 30 minutes to install. thats a 3-4 minute install, bad tecnique, low quality, dirty install, wrong enviroment, not to mention stretch marks, silvering, bad alignment, no warranty. check your local shop, its better and not expensive if you value your vehicle.
