This is just superb, I've been looking for "how to get more pin action in bowling" for a while now, and I think this has helped. I think for teaching beginners it is important to go over what the hook actually 'is'. Essentially the hand must induce a roll that is angled left of the ball motion (through the skid phase and for right handers). Then there is all the stuff you mentioned (which was great). Also could of added that there is 2 main ways to hook a bowling ball. Have your hand twisted so the index finger is pointing straight down and the middle and ring to the left upon release (and behind the ball). The other way is to not have your hand twisted (so the hand is vertical behind the ball) but upon release the hand will make its way to the right side of the ball and pull up (the hand will be perpendicular to the ground the whole time). These are 2 important notes that I often see missed. I realize this was a quick summary for the short video but maybe next time you can touch on these important points
I don’t see why you question what they said and BTY how many beginner Bowlers do you know that even know what the word perpendicular means? I thought they did an excellent job, explaining what they did there is nothing more to explain.
Thank you for posting this. They never ever mention this. They always just say hand stays behind the ball. Which is only half true. If you look at the demo release compared to his throwing release the hands are positioned in 2 different places. It’s no longer directly behind the ball but slightly turned to the right.
@@robertbrady416I totally agree! I too felt this video was missing something. The talk about having the hand straight on release, yet when the pro actually did it, his hand is not straight behind it but actually to the right of it inducing a spin 🤦♂️. Many of these tutorials only confuse the matter more by saying one thing and doing something different.
Great video! Funny that the other day watched video from 1994-95 of baker team competition on TH-cam. One of the teams had Mike Shady and Earl Anthony was praising his game on how solid it was. He was hammering the pocket on a difficult oil pattern.
I am a beginner. I always bowled without a hook, and I average about 120 a game. Today I decided I really want to try to learn how to hook better to get more pin action and watched a few videos on this topic. The thing I learned from these videos is that there is more than one way to do this. Speed is also a factor that should be calculated in as from videos, the more speed you have throwing the ball, the less time the ball has to spin and more time to spin the slower you go. My grandpa mentioned spot bowling to me before and that works, and my grandma always said to focus on a pin and keep your hand straight, which also worked. This was for no spinning of course. Both my grandpas said for spinning, you should start with your fingers in the holes sideways and then bowl. I did try this once or twice in regular games, but I always gutter as there seems to be no consistency. So today I played 4 games by myself. The very first thing I tried was to bowl with 2 fingers one hand, well that failed horribly as the ball just dropped before getting into the alley. So, I then tried to hold the ball with my other hand the whole time and spin with my other hand. The ball goes into the alley but did not spin. I tried again, still same result. So, then I tried one handed with hand in holes down below and spinning the ball at the same time, same result with no curve. I then tried combining what both my grandpas said with what you tube said, which was 2 fingers in hole to the right, not underneath and other hand holding the ball and throw with making the ball spin with my left hand (other hand). Finally, my ball curved and in a big way. I was happy I got my ball to spin. I tried again and same result where the ball spins at least. The whole time it has been gutter balls with maybe 1 pin. I then tried spot bowling using what I have learned, and boy did it take a lot of trial and error using up a few games. I tried the first set of dots mixing it up, I tried picking up the speed, I tried using the arrow markers to aim at and not consistent at all. I would occasionally get lucky and get a strike. Finally, in the fourth game I tried using my grandma's advice about looking at a pin. So, I found out during my fourth game that if I stand lined up with the fourth dot from the left and look at the farthest pin to the right, that about 60% of the time I was able to get the ball to curve and go right into the sweet spot. My consistency is still lacking but is much better than before. So now I need to see if maybe the speed is now a factor or if maybe I am not consistent because I am changing back and forth between my left hand engaging to spin the ball or not engaging. Basically, find out if it's the fingers being to the right and not underneath is spinning the ball or if it's the combination of both hands spinning the ball along with speed for the sweet pocket. So, my scores for games 1-3 were terrible being about 1-50. My fourth game where I was getting more consistent was 94. I think if I keep practicing and homing in on what does what, I can get my consistency up and thus my score will increase along with it. Later this week I will go play another 3-4 games. Overall, I think today was a good day and a good use of $14 as I gained experience and intel. So that is my journey I had today by myself just trying to try different things and finding out what works for me.
Buy your own bowling ball that has “reactive resin” cover, and have your pro shop drill it for “fingertip” grips. That’s going to make hooking the ball much easier. The bowling balls they have at the bowling alley are not made to hook
Yeah I been trying to learn how to hook on a consistent basis because without it I'm only averaging in the 120s....130s....I need to learn how to release and hook simultaneously. I been watching some PBA championships. I went up a little...but I still can't get the hook down.
Good Tips and drills.... but there aren't any good videos out ther yet that talk about how to even control the wrist/ball in the swing back to the top in order to have the flat wrist! The hardest thing as a beginner is to be able to handle the ball back and through to the point of release and have your wrist in that posistion. For the most part beginners are rotaded forward in order to hold on to the ball through that motion so it dosent fly off! Can you make a video of how to keep the wrist cupped tight from the draw back to the top and to the bottom at release? Release drill doesnt help if the thumb is so far forward holding th ball for dear life.
Coach Mike(s), Thanks for the fine video with great explanation/demonstration. As a life long chicken winger I can’t seem to stay under & behind the ball all the way. Maybe I’m pulling ? Anyway, I can execute the last drill (getting hand out to produce revs ) but don’t understand how to do that when the ball is swinging. Learn to let the thumb come out then rip the fingers ? Thank you
A comment on axis rotation would have been helpful. Looked like the ball was going end over end on the rev mat which also wouldn't hook down lane. Nice video.
yeppers, watching from @3:58 his hand goes around the ball while going up, not straight up as when it was on the revmat. However on the revmat It seem as if they were just talking about getting high spin rev's...*shrugs*
pls my friend invitined me to a bowling place for her bday, and for a school camp trip were also going to a bowling place and now I just found myself here. Lol
I consider myself an inexperienced bowler who is just learning. I bowled in a league for two years about 35 years ago, then stopped due to injury and two back surgeries. I’m 68 now and just started bowling again, and my question is; can I change my release, arm swing, etc, to significantly increase my revolutions and hook, or would I be better off just adjusting my approach and aiming location and accepting my modest hook and low revolutions? My current average is about 163 in two leagues and 187 in the third (I bowled above average the first night of the third league). I’m thinking about getting lessons in the next few weeks.
For anyone who knows forearm anatomy and planes of movement, it seems that what you need for spin is pronation of the wrist between 90 to 180 degrees from a fully supinated position. Further, the degree of wrist flexion affects the amount of spin you can generate. I also assume that the amount of forward force you generate also determines the point at which the ball grips the surface of the lane and initiates its spin. In other words, were you to apply maximal forward force I imagine spin would not take effect even if done correctly due to the forward inertia overcoming any rotational force.
@Enrique Barreto Generally the best way to strike with a house ball is consistent and accurate aim with solid speed. I can identify many a poor aiming straight ball that throws real hard/fast but manages to find "close enough" to the pocket that they bowl low handicaps in my leagues. I'm not saying they're wrong. I'm just saying plastic ball strikes need help elsewhere. Edit: it's also worth pointing out. In a normal tournament situation you're warmed up after 3 games not "done." Your local league power-arm may be bowling hard at 3 and winding down. But you may be trending up by 6-8 games deep. Remember bowling is a sport of LESS muscle pain not more. People who walk away inconsistent, sore, and "done," are not ready to compete. Period.
That can be a complicated question to answer. It can depend on the particular bowlers release and ball speed but especially the lane conditions. Ideally you'd want the heavier oil inside of the target area with the drier boards to the outside of the target area. Usually on the fresher oil conditions that target area may be more to the outside part of the lane and then and the oil breaks down more the target area would usually move more toward the inside part of the lane. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching our videos!
BEGINNER 83 years old. I loved to bowl 30+ years ago (never any training) and was always afraid I would drop the ball (10/12 house balls' and holes were either too tight or large ...yadda yadda. I am a girly girl; not strong. Just bought an 8 lb and probably should have brought a 6 pound. Haven't had it drilled yet, so not too late to exchange it. What do you think?: exchange for the 6 lb. I am leaning in that direction.
Great video! It helped me visualize the first two steps well but I am having trouble figuring out the getting the hand out fast. I have heard it described as a yo yo effect but in practice I can’t quite grasp the concept.
Focus on keeping your grip pressure mild at the release with your hand in proper position. The "yo you" reference is spot on. The faster you can collapse the hand at the release, the faster the ball spins off your hand. Glad you enjoyed it.
InsideBowling what I think hangs me up is that from what I understand is that while collapsing the hand we are also supposed to bring the hand along the side of the ball, as if you are turning a door knob at the same time.
This is glorious, been searching for "what do you call a person who plays bowling?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (do a search on google ) ? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend got cool results with it.
Great work on the explanation and the video, Coach. Seeing the positions and the movement is going to be helpful for my students. Kind of a side question. How do you feel span affects rotation? I have a student with span about an inch shorter than mine. He's strong youngster and can get around the ball quickly. Yet, he wonders how I get as much rotation (revs) as I do. I tell him it's because my fingers start almost under the ball due to my 5-1/4" span.
Maybe I am getting it wrong. This will only result in the ball spinning forward as seen in the video and not sideway... will that hook the ball? I tried it yesterday, and it doesn’t hook at all.
I throw a reverse hook and I am left handed. And, no, all left handers do not have a natural hook. My high league average was 196 with a 10 pound ball. Now that I am older still use the same weight, but can't get much speed on my ball, but still that same backup ball.
Winner of a video, I have been researching "bowling fingertip grip vs conventional" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Only way I can hook a ball is by no thumb in the hole, I've been bowling for years (not consistently like a league or anything), and always have been decent but never have been able to hook the damn ball, maybe these tips will help
Bowling consistently could mean consistently bad technique/drill/cover/ball. We don't have enough info to comment you man, but hopefully you found the pieces you needed.
If you want to practice the proper hand position and releasing the ball with your fingers, go get a football. Then try to throw the football underhanded and get a good spiral on it. That is the same hand position and finger release you want when throwing a bowling ball.
@@someguy2135 You're welcome and thank you for your reply. I used to play catch with my son when he was a little boy and I would toss the football to him underhanded. That's when it occurred to me that the release was the same as throwing a bowling ball. I was an avid bowler also at the time. A few years later I got a part time job at a bowling center and one of the things I did there was teach kids how to bowl. I used this technique to teach them how to throw a hook. It seem to help them.
I love how all of these videos show training up the back to hook. Play the video if them throwing s hook back at speed 0.25, they are clearly NOT going up the back. He's throwing the hook from about 4 o'clock, not 6. Teach what you actually do!!!
Sven thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. The key tip in this video is to start the release motion from the back of the ball, with fingers toward that 6:00 position. That doesn't mean to go through the ball from 6:00 straight through to 12:00. Ideally there will be a couple of inches/hours of counter-clockwise motion (for right handed bowlers) from about 6:00 through to about 4:00. Too many bowlers have their fingers on the side of the ball early already at the 4:00 or even 3:00 position before they get to the release point inhibiting rotation through the release as the fingers were already there. Thanks again for your comment and we hope this clarifies the point we were demonstrating.
@@insidebowling Finally, this has bugged me for a long time. As @Sven asked, why doesn't anyone talk about the elephant in the room? When you do the drills, you go from 6:00 to 12:00, but never explain that when you actually bowl, that would go pretty straight. Why not demonstrate the ACTUAL motion in the drills? Go from 6:00 to 4:00 with the hand during the drills? Makes me mental!
I have no problem releasing the ball since I'm arthritic, I have to slow down and not get ahead of my feet, my issues are I cannot throw the ball straight!
This doesn't explain how to hook a ball at all...? Am I just dumb? Y'all showed how to impart back to front spin, but not right to left spin. I don't understand how to get right to left spin without breaking my wrist......
I always hate when people say "keep your hand behind the ball" and leave it there. Those rev mat practice throws are only half the motion. If everyone does what was done on the mat we would all be throwing beautiful high rev straight balls.
Typical for this channel - give information that is technically good, but only gives half of what you really need. If you look at the release at the end of the video, there is a LOT more going on than what was explained in the video.
Im sorry. Are you degrading the team USA bowling coach and saying he isnt teaching the correct motion and position. Hahaha. Maybe you are the one who learned wrong. If he was he would be a coach for TEAM USA you 🤡
@@Inkedup128 They gave great advice on how a semi-roller release is done and how hook is achieved. Everything they taught was totally correct. I have no problem with it. But, this is not how Classic Full Roller's release the ball, so this advice does not apply to them at all. There are still Full Rollers out there. So a follow up video on how a Full Roller can hook the ball too would be nice. That is all I am saying.
Wow..not even one word about what the ball is made out of, nit one word about how they drill the finger holes for release..and then he is showing a ball with a counter weight hole drilled into it...let's see them pick up a house ball and show all the same things..not going to be putting that much of a curve on it then..
Beginners listen up. These are truths they never told you about hooking balls. First, you gotta have the right ball. The heavier it is, the easier it hooks. The more expensive it is, the easier to hook. There are balls that never hooks even if you try. Gotta have fingertip holes.
This was great, I have been researching "what does a strike mean in bowling?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (search on google ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.
The reason most people release at top or side of the ball is because they can't get their thumb out. If a ball is NOT fitted correctly for a bowler's hand, then all this instruction means nothing.
Your teaching, do not coincide when they release the bowling ball. When they release the bowling ball, I notice that their fingers is at the right side of the ball not at the back.
For a real effective release and ball roll, it's very important to have the fingers start the release motion on the back of the ball and then have a slight bit of lateral rotation (only about 2-3") with the fingers. Ideally then the fingers will rotate through the ball more than going around the outside of the ball. If the fingers start on the back on the ball and don't rotate at all the ball will only go straight. Many bowlers have their fingers too much on the side before they release which then inhibits the rotation motion at the release as the fingers were already there. That tends to create a weaker ball roll that produces less effective hook and worse pin carry as there is too much side rotation. Ideally that slight rotation of the fingers will happen right at the release point not before. The higher level bowlers will tend to have more forward roll with just a bit of side rotation. I hope this clarifies the release motion better. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching!!
These videos with this guy explaining are terrible. He constantly says “as you know”. No we don’t know, that’s why we are watching this. We don’t know what the hell rev rate is if you are teaching us how to hook. Hand in the center of the ball? So where is the Center? Where is the equator? We don’t have tape on our balls.
Why do I see them use two hands when hooking? The spin rotations are not like cricket? U rotate the ball forward for it to hook right to left? This is too much for my brain to comprehend So there's no wrist involved Ffs
I tried this technique last week after watching the video. IT WORKS! Thank you so much for the lessons.
Thanks for the comment and for watching our videos, we appreciate it! Keep up the good work on the lanes!!

Thanks for the kind words Mark
I think spam makes a big difference as in, longer span, revs come more easily.
Thank you I am going bowling today
Update:I GOT 3RD PLACE WOOOOO
Maybe I am getting it wrong. This will only result in the ball spinning forward as seen in the video and not sideway... will that hook the ball? I tried it yesterday, and it doesn’t hook at all.
This tip is not for beginners whatsoever. It's for the yo yo release which is hard as hell to accomplish.
I throw a reverse hook and I am left handed. And, no, all left handers do not have a natural hook. My high league average was 196 with a 10 pound ball. Now that I am older still use the same weight, but can't get much speed on my ball, but still that same backup ball.
Mike is legit. Glad to see he is passing on his knowledge. I like the knee drill.
Glad you enjoyed the clip.
InsideBowling Glad you sell Brad and Kyle merch too.
How much should you turn the ball before you release the ball or do you stay in the same position at the starting position?
Thanks
Awesome tip Coach Shady And Mike! Great info and content! #insidebowling
Thank you Romeo
You seem to be skipping the most important part - turning over your wrist when releasing the ball. (Or otherwise imparting the “spin.”
How does that apply if you are standing to release?
Can a lack of flexibility (knee bend) adversely affect your ability to hook the ball?
im supposed to turn my wrist at release right? seems like the end of the video is doin that. and its not explained.
When I watch the B roll clips in between explaing how to hook the ball the bowlers wrist facing to the side Not towards the ceiling!
Winner of a video, I have been researching "bowling fingertip grip vs conventional" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
Yeah this video teaches one thing, but then the b roll shows something completely different
Where do you coach? I’d love to get some coaching in.
Shannon Coaches at McKendree University in Illinois. You can also find her online as she is one of the coaches in the Backstage Bowling. You can even check out the 7 day free trial at BackstageBowling.com. Thanks!
Where can I get the rev device?
What matches up to a rhino yellow dot 14 lbs reaction ball
Where can I buy that roller device?
can be found at eileens bowling buddy
Only way I can hook a ball is by no thumb in the hole, I've been bowling for years (not consistently like a league or anything), and always have been decent but never have been able to hook the damn ball, maybe these tips will help
I know how to hook with 2 hand
Bowling consistently could mean consistently bad technique/drill/cover/ball. We don't have enough info to comment you man, but hopefully you found the pieces you needed.
Where do I get one of the holders you had?
I love bawling but im having trouble hooking the ball!!$$
If you want to practice the proper hand position and releasing the ball
with your fingers, go get a football. Then try to throw the football
underhanded and get a good spiral on it. That is the same hand position
and finger release you want when throwing a bowling ball.
Great tip! A lot of us grew up throwing a football like that, but not a bowling ball. Very helpful. Thanks.
Wow, this just clicks.
Was ist das für ein "Pad" mit den kleinen Kugeln?
@@dsals5625 "We're gonna show you how to hook a ball"...proceeds to show you how to roll it straight
Thank you!
Chicks DO dig the big wheel!
What about left hand
How to hook while releasing instantaneously on a consistent basis....is what I need to see.
I have no problem releasing the ball since I'm arthritic, I have to slow down and not get ahead of my feet, my issues are I cannot throw the ball straight!
But how is the hook actually
Made ? When releasing from behind the ball with palm up it goes dead straight
Did brock work in Sleepy Hollow?
now im gonna try it on my step-sister
let me know how it goes
Join bowling for first time tomorrow
So how is it going ?

Let's see if you can do that on natural wood lanes
Why do you guys make it so hard to find the training tool you use? How about a link?
that device at 2:00? eileensbowlingbuddy
Nice and easy explanation for an amateur. Thanks master I guess Im gonna try it for a while.
This doesn't explain how to hook a ball at all...? Am I just dumb? Y'all showed how to impart back to front spin, but not right to left spin. I don't understand how to get right to left spin without breaking my wrist......
1:41 I am so sorry Brock...
Done it. i've scored 243. thanks
I always hate when people say "keep your hand behind the ball" and leave it there.
Those rev mat practice throws are only half the motion. If everyone does what was done on the mat we would all be throwing beautiful high rev straight balls.
I never bowled 100 before hope this helps
That's me. My hand on "top" of the equator. Damnit. Almost 10 years of trying to learn how to hook. No chance.
3:00 Warning to older and weaker bowlers. Great way to blow out the tendon on the inside of your elbow so it will hurt you for the rest of your life.
Good note.
If you're hurting a tendon you're doing something beyond your physical ability. Period.
Go to the pro shop. PROBLEM SOLVED 😆
All modern reactive bowling balls hook nowadays , they are talking about rev. rate not hook .
Asking the same question
Typical for this channel - give information that is technically good, but only gives half of what you really need. If you look at the release at the end of the video, there is a LOT more going on than what was explained in the video.
But if you are a Classic Full Roller like myself, this is "not" how you hook a bowling ball. But great demo for Semi-Rollers however. Thanks.
Im sorry. Are you degrading the team USA bowling coach and saying he isnt teaching the correct motion and position. Hahaha. Maybe you are the one who learned wrong. If he was he would be a coach for TEAM USA you 🤡
@@Inkedup128 Please take at least a millisecond to read what I wrote before you start trolling.
@@nordattack i did read what you wrote. So what exactly is the way a classic full roller hook a ball?
@@Inkedup128 They gave great advice on how a semi-roller release is done and how hook is achieved. Everything they taught was totally correct. I have no problem with it.
But, this is not how Classic Full Roller's release the ball, so this advice does not apply to them at all. There are still Full Rollers out there. So a follow up video on how a Full Roller can hook the ball too would be nice. That is all I am saying.
@@nordattack but thats what im asking. What is a full roller? Cuz i have only known "traditional" hook which is this and 2handed.
Show it in slo mo
Chicks "dig the big wheel?" I enjoy bowling but never thought of any bowling "technique" as a aphrodisiac! Your comments ladies???
Wow..not even one word about what the ball is made out of, nit one word about how they drill the finger holes for release..and then he is showing a ball with a counter weight hole drilled into it...let's see them pick up a house ball and show all the same things..not going to be putting that much of a curve on it then..
Shady sure looks slim!
Hahaha underrated comment
Wouldn't this just roll the ball straight?? Your fingers have to work around the side of the ball.
I was wondering the same thing!
instructions weren’t clear
The red did NOT help. I can’t see
If you pause it at 5:32, the hand is completely different than the explanation. It’s not center and the equator is tilted.
Beginners listen up. These are truths they never told you about hooking balls. First, you gotta have the right ball. The heavier it is, the easier it hooks. The more expensive it is, the easier to hook. There are balls that never hooks even if you try. Gotta have fingertip holes.
"gutter"? i thought they were supposed to call it "channel" :) i guess they missed the memo.
How about us older who can't spin that fast?
i think i actually no LESS about how to throw a hook after this video.
😂😅😅😂😅😂
How does a video about hooking a ball forget to teach you how to hook a ball lol
Yeah, no. You don't hook a bowlilng ball by imparting a forward roll. The spin must be angled away from the ball's vector.
This is too much for my brain to comprehend
So there's no wrist involved

How to hook a bowling Ball: Be two-handed. Video over
Respectfully, this is not the most helpful video for trying to learn as a beginner. I feel like I put all these tips in to practice and no hook
No f-ing way! In the drill the ball spins perfectly forward, that will not hook. So stupid!!
